Six hits but only one run.
Gwreck Apr 30 2011 12:38 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
That and throwing about 80% strikes.
Edgy DC Apr 30 2011 12:46 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
We need more. This tightrope is a lot to ask of our defense and pitching.
Edgy DC Apr 30 2011 12:48 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
Big departure for Terry to take his pitcher into the seventh of a one-run game. He opens the inning with only 79 pitches spent.

Frayed Knot Apr 30 2011 12:50 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
I was just about to posit the question about whether you let Niese lead off in the 8th inning were he to get out of this inning unscathed.
Edgy DC Apr 30 2011 12:58 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
Now my question is why Buchholz is getting ready to come in. Top of the order, tie game, two on, one out, seventh inning, and we go with perhaps our number-four reliever.
duan Apr 30 2011 01:00 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
because you're hoping he gets the out and then you're expecting to replace him to lead off. And if he gets that out the Polonco, Rollins, Howard run is a lot tougher?
duan Apr 30 2011 01:00 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
oops. i thought it was two outs.

I'm not sure I approve of having Harris take two. Not with this pitcher.

I know it's partially that I'm just frustrated that they lost, but I'm annoyed they pulled Niese.
Edgy DC Apr 30 2011 02:20 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
Reallly? He was having a turrible inning. I just wish they went with a pitcher higher up on their depth charts.
Ceetar Apr 30 2011 02:36 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
It's true, but he's a better pitcher than Buchholz. I was hoping the Halladay out and the turning over the lineup would help him buckle down. I mean, he's the starter. that's his job. I was worried after the walk to the crappy catcher guy that maybe he was tiring a little bit, but he hadn't thrown a ton of pitches or anything either. Did he have flu symptoms this week too?
Frayed Knot Apr 30 2011 03:01 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
I think Buchholz is probably a better strike-out guy than Izzy at this point so I don't think it was a bad idea to go that route - or, by that reasoning, you could argue that Frankie is the guy to go to there although knowing it was a 2-out stint at most counters that. Of course we all know the real reason was that it was TB's "spot" to come in and not Izzy's or Frankie's, but that's a whole 'nother story. I had no problem pulling Niese after he went 1B then 4-pitch walk to the 7 & 8 hitters following the HR. We had a few chances, just didn't cash them in. Tough days for Ike & Bay.
Ceetar Apr 30 2011 03:04 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
My other thought that although Buchholz curve is different than Niese's, I might've went with something a little different than what they'd been seeing.
themetfairy Apr 30 2011 03:22 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
That sucked.
Edgy DC Apr 30 2011 04:13 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
But they each pulled a gem on defense, for what it's worth. I'm fine with pulling Niese. He may be a better pitcher than Buchholz, but he wasn't in that inning. Finding new life by striking out a trying-to-bunt pitcher after bowing to the seventh and eighth hitters and then turning over a lineup saturated with all-stars in the top half? Yeah, it could happen, but that's not where I put my chips. I go to Frankie, Beato, Isringhausen, in that order. Saving all three of them to protect three-run leads is malarkey. Use good pitchers to protect 1-1 ties also.
Frayed Knot Apr 30 2011 04:45 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
It's also not like Buchholz has been bad, so let's not be too quick to mock Terry for sticking too closely to roles while we make a similar one by assigning levels of 'goodness' too soon.

themetfairy Apr 30 2011 06:26 PM Re: IGT, 4/30: @ Phillies |
I did like the defensive lineup graphic they had on the scoreboard before the game -
