It's more or less a trivial point, but we're one Angel short of having a healthy offense for the first time since... when?

Re: Mayday IGT: Mets @ Phils 05/01/11

David Wright should have a kid and name him CB.

And then Placido Polanco can name his son Nat, and Ryan Zimmerman can name his kid Ted and we've completed the circle. We have to leave the Marlins out because it would force some poor thirdbaseman to re-name his kid every year.

Byrdak's frigging worthless. Howie had it nailed in the previous inning when Terry correctly decided to stay with Young (or even Beato) to get Schnieder, since bringing in Byrdak there would only result in a worse matchup vs. Mayberry. The only thinbg he's worth doing is hanging around for Howard, but can't get it done.

Things Wayne Hagin left me baffled about during my run tonight:
* Paulino's infield single
* Reyes' infield single
* The strike appeal on Schneider

The first two he never finished describing the defensive play. He made a decent recovery on the appeal play but it was only because that happened he ever got it out -- he was spiraling into one of those verbal diarreah spasms and the call snapped him out of it.

Funny thing. After the eighth, I got a flash-- as during the Cardinal 20-inning game-- that this game would suck more to lose than it would be satisfying to win. Didn't think that meant it would actually GO 20.

Capuano would have been a good idea.
But this way you do get to start the inning with Buchholz and go to Iggy (or whoever) only if/when he gets into trouble.
If you were going to change pitchers anyway then I would have PH'd

I'd consider giving bullpen catcher Dave "I'm Biking To Florida" Racianello some Schaefer... but I'm pretty damn sure he's out of room, still.

Bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello set the official visitors' clubhouse record at Citizens Bank Park with 14 cheese steaks consumed. The previous record had belonged to former major leaguer Dmitri Young.

And it's not like he didn't have work yesterday-- there were four Met pitching changes. I've got some decent stomach capacity, and I can't imagine eating, say, 14 Twinkies and then squatting for 5 minutes at a time to warm up relievers.

The chants of "U-S-A" in the visitors clubhouse after the game were partially reflecting the international news. But they also were celebrating an American tradition -- gorging oneself.

Let's break this down:
We can assume that Racaniello isn't getting the same per diem the players, so he's definitely more motivated to get to the park early for the free food there.

Additionally, we know Racaniello is David Wright's wingman, so if they were out (even just at the hotel bar) after the game on Friday, a cheesesteak to start the day on Saturday might just be perfect.

1. Friday, 2:00 PM, lunch.
2. Friday, 7:30 PM, dinner, after the game starts (2nd inning or so).
3. Friday, post-game.
4. Saturday breakfast/hangover cure, 9:00 AM.
5. Saturday, 1:30 PM, lunch after the game starts (2nd inning or so).
6 and 7. Saturday, post-game dinner.
8. Sunday, 1:00 PM, lunch.
9. Sunday, 4:30 PM, snack
10. Sunday, 8:30 PM, dinner after the game starts.
11. Sunday, 11:00 PM, extra-innings snack
12 and 13. Monday morning, 1:00 AM, post-game meal

I myself could probably do that. He'd need to go 15+ in a three-game series for me to be really impressed.

Have you ever had nothing but meat for 3-4 meals a day for three straight days? One huge gorging meal/one day of gorging meals is one thing... but no relief, no fiber and nothing but beef for a long weekend?

Yeah, but as a wage-earning dude who pinches himself at his good fortune of hanging out with multi-millionairre babe-magnets, this sort of sadly strikes me as a version of the playground flunky desperately eating worms to maintain some status among the cool kids, even if it's grossout status.

Neither. Take away the opponent, the Sunday night stage and the external influences (which, granted, would be "other than that, Mrs. Lincoln..." reasoning) it was a close game that had to end some time. It never became absurd. Maybe another inning or two would have sent it there. We only got down to one pitcher as pinch-hitter, Hamels. And the stakes (let alone the cheese stakes) weren't high enough to make this OMG.

Good, solid, 14-inning win. Paulino and the Navy Seals, not necessarily in that order, bumped it into classic terrain.

I'm with Greg. With the exception of Howard's opposite field flick at the worst possible moment, the Mets pretty much dominated that game.

There wasn't really any nailbiting other than the 7th and 8th. No runners on 3rd less than one out, no points where it looked like the Phillies would win on an out. Meanwhile the Mets were bashing the ball right at people, Hairston hitting it 400 feet for an out, and them just generally flailing with RISP. I particularly enjoyed the announcers going on and on about how awesome Polanco was in clutch situations and have him fail to come through each time.

And as long as we're drawing parallels, when the towers went down the Mets were defending NL champs. Now Osama is dead and the tower[crossout:2h06w7g1]s[/crossout:2h06w7g1] is going back up. Good omen?

Yeah, did we see Gload all weekend?

One thought I once entertained was to allow uniformed coaches to enter the game in thse wars of attrition, but only if the entire regular roster has otherwise been expended, so there's little motivation keeping a recently retired still-in-shape player as firstbase coach to serve as a secret weapon, because you have to expend all your extra pitchers before he can enter the game.

That reminds me of the conspiracy theory last year that McGuire was going to suddenly be activated for the playoff run by the Cardinals and have his Hall of Fame eligibility pushed back five years to when people are possibly more friendly to those like him.
