Gotta be the Brent Lilli. It's the bridge to MFY defeat.

With one out, runners on 1st and 2nd, Sergio Santos stepped in and faced Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano. A-Rod and Cano ripped two screaming liners down the right field line that were simply put on this Earth to be game-winning doubles...

...and Brent Lillibridge caught both of them

The first was an inside-out drive to the wall from A-Rod. Lillibridge ranged right on the warning track and stretched his glove out toward the foul line and squeezed it while crashing into the wall. Athletic, brilliantly-timed, and almost assuredly staved off defeat...it was also far from his best work.

Cano followed that up with a sinking liner with a lot less hangtime to it. With barely a moment to judge it, Lillibridge raced to cut it off with a dive, planted his back foot, laid-out horizontal, and snagged it centimeters away from the grass while sliding on his belly. His arms were raised in triumph while his face was still buried in turf, and entry into the game-opening video montage at U.S. Cellular was assured.

As far as baseball moments go, they don't get a whole lot better. And as far as baseball moments in April go, I can't think of much to compare it to.

still maybe second to the Shea Bridge, but for people? definitely.

Maybe if the park weren't so tiny he wouldn't have been able to get to them. hmm...

I'm a big fan of the Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Bridge. I practically grew up on it. But yeah, that guy may be the difference in the Yankees season by the end of the year. I'm sure they're right now trying to come up with a deal to acquire the guy.

Gotta say, Sterling called both plays excellently. I was running on the Williamsburg bridge when I heard 'em.

I have to say it's encouraging to see another team bitten on the ass by the "double-closer" endgame gambit. Soriano has pitched like shit when he hasn;t been great, already missed a game with mysterious pains, and is getting booed by the MFY faithful. Plus, the hitting continues to suck: 2 solo homers was all the O they could muster.

Guillen's remark after the game: "I found my new closer: Lillibridge."

Re: Best Bridge in NYC

Consider also that Lillibridge came up as a SS; was traded from Pitt to Atlanta for Adam LaRoche, and then to the ChiSox for Javier Vazquez. The Sox have been using him as a kind of all-purpose fill-in.
And that he was only in the game as of the 8th inning when he came in as a pinch-runner for the guy that $36 million set-up man Rafael Soriano plunked before serving up the eventual game-winning HR to Paul Konerko. That pumps the ERA of 'Score-iano' (as Steve Somers calls him) to near 9.00. The night before (when they were getting punked by Philip Humber) he allowed a low pop-up to simply drop just a foot or two behind the mound as he never even made a move for it and it wasn't high enough to any of the other infielders reach (insert range jokes here). He only gave up one run in that outing.

2 solo homers was all the O they could muster.

Pushing their already ridiculous pct of runs via HR* up towards 65%

He had to have already taken his nightly Five-Hour-Energy so as to give a sufficiently-overwrought delivery of the call for A-Rod's expected game-winner, and since he was in the energy neighborhood...

I saw the slo-mo replay of the last catch. The ball hit down toward the heel of the glove then slid into the pocket. It was that close to being a game winning hit. Amazing.

The first iteration of the catch video there-- the "Must C" stuff-- is a medley of all the calls. Sterling's is in there with the "WCBS" chiron in the upper right over My9 video.

Also, reminded me of this.

cheers , Sterling is the last call in the montage and it's the game ending call.....he played that one straight and it was a good call.....better than Kay's call on the Rodriguez blast.

He seems a little out of his element and figuring it out as he goes along there, doesn't he? Just a wonderful merger of instinct, effort, and youthful athleticism.

The video had both Sterling's and the White Sox' play by play. It was a beautiful thing to see...

The best part of the video was the look on Captain Intangibles' face...

You really can't blame Sterling for almost getting excited there. Until about a split-second before he catches it, it looks like a game-winning double into the corner. You know he was going for "And it's a... BASE HIT! ROUNDING third is Jeter..." Ugh. Gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

Best NYC bridge since MC Shan's "The Bridge (Beat Bridge)," circa 1985.

Re: Best Bridge in NYC

The best bridge in New York used to be played in the Metropolitan Commercial Bridge League back in the 70's. Many world class players (names that showed up frequently in the bridge columns) in it.

Ah, yes, but Brooklyn blew up the Bridge. (South Bronx helped them out.)
