Usually we head to Illinois to spend the holiday with the in-laws, but we're home in GR this time. So I have to go candy shopping tonight!

I'll be thinking about how baby Jesus laid pastel eggs for your sins. Or something like that.

How do you celebrate ANZAC Day? (Gallipoli, inexplicably, was the last movie my parents took us to as a family and it blew my mind.)

A single work friend told me this morning about the best alternative Easter celebration ever (and the best alternative-holiday celebration I've heard in years): he and some similarly-family-less friends decided to make Sunday Happy (Aunt) Esther Day, with a Sanford and Son marathon, junk swap, and "Elizabeth Is Risen" cake. Sacrilicious!

Attend the Dawn Service at 4:28am (held everywhere) - followed by a "gunfire breakfast" which consists of coffee and rum, ANZAC biscuits ("cookies") usually with something very greasy. In the afternoon (usually after a short nap) go to the pub to play "two-up" (a form of gambling which is legal on April 25th) and watch the footy (both Aussie Rules and Rugby League rig their regular season schedule so the same fixture is played every ANZAC day) Peter Weir's film was great if a bit jingoistic. Not liked very much by British and French vets.

Well, I was a kid, what did I know? I just never had seen anything like it, and certainly not had my parents take me to anything like it.

What's the significance of 4:28 AM?
Yeah, it kind of absolves any Australian decision-making in the deal and hangs it all on the British overlords - apparently not quite the way it actually happened.

The time of the first landing in 1915.

Also forgot to mention, most people where rosemary sprigs on Anzac Day -- as do Aussie MLBers on their uniforms, apparently, however the only visual evidence I've seen is Ryan Rowland-Smith. I should drop Paul Lukas a line, aye,
