Tivo and Amazon (and best buy and whatnot)

Because I need to rant..

Saw a gold box deal on Amazon for a Tivo premier box for $50, which we'd been talking about getting anyway. So we bought it, we have one Tivo already, and it's so much better than our Optimum DVR which dies every 6-9 months wiping out all our shows, so we figured nice and easy.

nope.

Apparently you cannot get lifetime service on these third party boxes, something that's not readily apparent when you buy them. I can only get monthly service at $20 a month, which is more than my cablevision DVR, plus I need a $2 a month cable card from cablevision also. I can not get the lifetime contract at $400 or even the discounted $300 for already owning two Tivo boxes. I can't prepay a year at a discounted rate. I can't do anything else. So another $240 a year.

I'm going to call them tomorrow, but the internet suggests it's hopeless. It doesn't matter that I'm going to tell them that I'm going to return it, which means not only are they not getting the $400 i want to give them, but I'm likely going to cancel my other Tivo and just switch to multi-room DVR with Verizon which should lower my bills anyway.
