Giants @ Mets iGt 5/3/11

Ryan Vogelsong and his wife Nicole oppose RA Dickey and his wifey Anne.

Nicole, like RA, is a native Nashvillian. Hmmm.

The Mets will wear special stars and stripes hats tonight.

Is it military night or is this a celebration of Bin Laden's killing?

I know the Mets are giving out free fix to military people but I don't recall any specific reason.

Well Bay and Pagan will both be back by this weekend, which should straighten out the bench, as Sandy can make the decision based on the actual bench and not who can play where in the OF.

I'm worried about Thole now. I don't know what's up there. He's missing things that I would probably catch. I wonder if he toned done the catching workouts a bit (or that's just the nature of the bigs versus AAA?) now that he's "made it"?

Same with Ike. While buntings horrible in that spot, especially with who was up behind him, does he practice it? If he takes bunting practice as much as everyone else and works at it for the sake of that one or two times a year where it might be prudent. over-shifts or what not, then fine, drop one down (not there), but otherwise, just freaking swing.

Let's not make too much of the bunt attempt. It was dumb but given a swingaway, Ike hit into a DP only got lucky that the 2B booted it.

And enough with the criticism of Reyes not stealing. And on Howie for going after the percentage of Rodriguez's "clean innings" as if 1-2-3 is the only way to go.

Re: Giants @ Mets iGt 5/3/11

Lots of Giants fans in the ballpark tonight which makes things that much more unpleasant.

We really deserved to lose after screwing up the 9th so badly. Additionally, I am really starting to tire of Chin Lung Hu, who apparently cannot hit major league pitching. If Reyes is going to play essentially every game, we don't need a backup shortstop unless he gets hurt, in which case we can make a roster move at that point. Additionally, I bet Turner could cover if necessary. He has provided essentially no value to the team.

Thole really embarassed himself with his defense tonight. The three hits were great but any value they provided were negated by the rally-killing GIDPs.

I was disappointed with the bullpen management tonight, particularly in not putting Rodriguez back out for a second inning. I also might have left Gee in, rather than yanking him to have Isringhausen pitch to only one batter (the pitcher's spot was due up second the next inning).

---

I recognize that the Mets (and Fred, in particular) are very supportive of the military and veterans. I always welcome an organized military appreciation night, and really, if you've got active duty personnel on leave who get to go to the game for the night, I'm always in favor of them throwing out the first pitch. Thanks for your brave service.

But the "We-Killed-Bin-Laden" aura of the night, with the awful, awful hats and the intolerable "God Bless America" and putting Chris Young on the diamondvision to talk 30 seconds of nonsense about how this is a "historic day" was downright offensive. I realize that everybody is going to react to the news in a different, personal way and I am happy to allow for that. For example, I broke out the Johnny Walker Blue on Sunday night as a toast to those responsible for conducting that brave mission. But to have the organized celebration at the BASEBALL game was way out of line.

Big misread on the Mets' part and it cheapened the intended effect. In addition to the idiotic caps, I noticed Mets/American flag pins and Mets/Statue of Liberty pins broken out in one of the team stores, as if the First Baseball Game in New York After... magic was going to be automatically transferrable, Get Yours Today!

Also I received my first-ever full patdown entering Citi Field -- Bullpen Gate, where I don't usually enter. I showed what a threat I was by giggling uncontrollably (it tickled). A few feet from where they were groping me for my own good there was a veritable battalion of military personnel. I somehow think that made the place safer, at least at the Bullpen Gate.

I have to confess as I took in the spontaneous U-S-A chant from CBP the other night, I was thinking "glad this isn't at Citi Field -- place would be three-quarters empty by now, those still here would be doing the wave or still standing in Shake Shack line."

I didn't get the Chris Young thing either.

The fans are different. That is, the mindset of the fans are different. Not because of the park but because of the state of the team.

There's no question that Citi Field doesn't have the same atmosphere as even a half-empty Shea. This was immediately apparent even in the early part of 2009, when the park was full every night and there was no reason for despair.

I attribute that a lot to not knowing the park and people wandering around and taking it in, and atmosphere never being great in April anyway. And off two collapses, it wasn't a great attitude among fans.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd like to be in first for a sustained amount of time to bolster enthusiasm, or really be in it when we play the Phillies in July, before I'd be really comfortable judging the crowds at Citi. I think it has potential, especially down low. I could see that RF corner, with the Pepsi Porch and Mo's zone screaming, being very hostile to a visiting right fielder.

Well, I have no great Hu lust, but there's something on Terry here, that he (1) can't find any starts for Hu, (2) keeps a redikalikalikalously short bench, and (3) burns that bench nightly like a serial arsonist, leaving Hu frequently the team's last best hope. They might have gotten more than six pitches from Isringhausen had they double-switched when bringing him in, but that would have taken some awkward maneuvering, as the team was already on their third left-fielder by the seventh inning.

I never dreamed I'd be lecturing three straight managers about their jobs. Buchholz should have been about four innings away from entering the game last night.

I stand and applaud you and damn it I am going to wear a commemorative hat in your honor....seriously though , the whole thing was a debacle , when Ike squared around to bunt Cohen was beside himself and you could tell needed to restrain his thoughts ......agree on Hu but apparently Collins loves him, every freaking manager seems to have one.

On Thole , I thought Darling brought up a good point although I have no idea how true it might be but it makes sense....Thole has gotten very bad habits catching Dickey and when he needs to catch a regular type pitcher those habits are getting exposed ....bad fundies ...

Big difference for me between Shea and Citi is that Shea didn't entice you to walk around and savor the ballpark where Citi does , and that's one of the things management wants right?

That's all new ballparks. Which is why I never understood the complaints about empty seats behind the plate at either NY park. They built indoor bars (which isn't really anything special, btw) behind the plate and you expect some of these rich fat cats to sit in the cold april weather at 10pm at night?

The thing is, the game hasn't force anyone to stay in their seat much since Citi opened. But in all stadiums, concessions basically close down in the 8th and 9th, so for those big games and late inning pressure situations, everyone SHOULD be in their seats, or at least standing in viewing areas.

The crowd seems different, somewhat lifeless. I didn't even hear the obnoxous 'balk' cheer when the opposing pitcher stepped off.

People get ridiculously excited with pizza box races and t shirt launches. They'll fucking kill you for that shirt. The Mets had a potential rally going while they repositioned my section for the box race. A free slice was at stake. I'd be a dick and ask for the cash equivalent.

Brian Wilson looks like a courier. A courier that's winning. That hairdo is ridiculous.

Nice touch having Seaver and Piazza getting the 'Let's Go Mets' chant going on the scoreboard. But Mikey better redo that shot and fix his hair. It aint helping his 'I'm not gay" stance.

The usher is still checking tickets in the tenth inning. WTF? Get lost.

It's not like it's his first kid and the wife needs him there to help out with the other two. This is his third kid, you want to be there for the birth - fine, but speaking from experience it's a lot less wonderment and a lot more disgusting smells. Whatever, to each his own.

And whichever side you're on, it doesn't take an entire three game series (plus - ahem - an off day on Monday) to pop out a kid.

As for #1, there's no reason to find any starts for Hu because he's not any good. Is he supposed to sit Reyes or Murphy? I suppose Hu could have gotten a start or two that went to Emaus or Turner instead but it's been pretty well established that Hu can't hit, at all.

EDIT: That is, assuming he has to leave town. If the birth is in the New York suburbs, and the Mets are at home, he can take a few hours away to play in the game. I'd allow him to report later than the other players, but he really could play in the game.

Clearly, what Jose Reyes did at the plate last night was a rarity in Mets history. Any time a single player reaches base six times, it's highly likely that his team won the game, but it didn't turn out that way last night. Two final notes: Reyes is the only shortstop in team history to have done this, and he's also the only player to do so and steal a base during the game, which he did once in each game.

And after perusing that list, the only player to have done it more than once.

But so what, right? Trade him because he's not worth what he's going to get in his next contract. Doesn't provide any excitement, fans don't come to watch him, he's not a good guy, always gets in trouble off the field, etc., etc.

Consider this: What would you think of Bay's paternity leave if it occurred during the last two weeks of the season and the Mets were in contention?

Precedent! From just that scenario, mid-September 2008.

ST. PETERSBURG -- While the Red Sox are in a heated race with the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East, Boston outfielder Jason Bay won an entirely different kind of race on Tuesday.

He rushed out of Florida swiftly enough to make it back to Boston in time for the birth of his second child.
Bay's wife, Kristen, delivered Evelyn Jane at roughly 6:45 ET on Tuesday night. Bay arrived roughly 45 minutes before the birth.

Bay will likely rejoin the Red Sox on Friday in Toronto, where they open a three-game series against the Blue Jays.

It doesn't seem to make sense for Bay to fly all the way back to St. Petersburg for the finale in this three-game series against the Rays, which will take place on Wednesday night.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona had talked at length with Bay over the past few days, and there was some hope that Kristen could perhaps be induced on Thursday, when the Red Sox have an off-day before their weekend series in Toronto.

But it was not to be.

"She just wouldn't cooperate," quipped Francona before Tuesday's game. "That baby is coming pretty soon."

Without Bay, the Red Sox went with an alignment of Jacoby Ellsbury in left, Coco Crisp in center and Mark Kotsay in right.

Kotsay hit sixth, which is where Bay has been making the bulk of his starts of late.

Re: Giants @ Mets iGt 5/3/11

You can tell from this what Skip thinks of paternity leave for ballplayers.

Terry Collins recalls a time when players didn't take leaves of absence for the birth of their children.

"Nobody left," the Mets manager said. "Nobody went to weddings -- if their uncle was getting married, nobody went. You played, because the season was six months long or five months long and you stayed. But the game has changed."

Man, you can hear him spitting tobacco all over somebody's bassinet while he's answering.

"I'm sure the wives are happier," Collins said.

Translation:

My fucking left fielder wasn't here when we had to face Lincecum because his wife was having a what? What kind of fucking world do we live in?

BTW, the kid was born in Greenwich. Too bad Tom Seaver doesn't live up there anymore. He might have bumped into Bay and set him straight.

"Tom, my wife just gave birth! Our third child!"
"Why aren't you at the ballpark?"
"Didn't you hear me? A baby boy!"
"You have Lincecum tonight. What the fuck are you doing here? Capuano's gonna need every run he can get."

At which point Tom would have spit tobacco all over somebody's bassinet.

Wait a minute? Greenwich? That's a commute! I thought he was in Colorado Springs or someplace ballplayers' families live.

Re: Giants @ Mets iGt 5/3/11

The whole thing is bullshit.

Again, there are the same five to six months every year that a professional baseball player knows that he's committed to being with his team almost every day. It's really not that hard to look at a calendar and do some basic math when planning your family if that's your occupation.

Also - FOUR days for paternity leave? Really? These guys make a minimum of what -$450,0000.00? They can all afford a baby nurse or nanny to help out mom for the duration. Daddy is not needed at home. If the guy wants to be there for the actual birth then, you know, whatever. But after you've had your first child and you see exactly what the entails, I'm not sure you A) really need to see it again or B) really want to. Again though, to each his own and I won't begrudge that (but still -as a ballplayer there are 3-4-5 months where you've got nothing but time, you know?).

Bay in particular - making a bazillion dollars, lousy year last year, missed 40% of his team's games, team is struggling without him this year and he is only just back, lives 30 minutes from the stadium. That's 30 minutes. That means he could be home pretty fucking fast should the wife go into labor or need him for anything else. Yes, MLB says he is entitled to it and it's his right to take it but really Jason, do you really think you needed to?

The two games he missed against SF were very winnable. A single at-bat from Bay could have turned either or both games. Bad decisions Jason, sorry.

Jason says Stay Classy, CBA!

“I think it’s classy to afford the team the luxury,” Bay said, “and make it so the player doesn’t have to worry about leaving someone shorthanded.”

Right, because Lucas Duda is the exact same player as Jason Bay.

Gimme a break.

You know, the new park is supposed to have everything. How about a birthing center under the bleachers?

With a few customizations, I'm sure K-Rod's cell can serve double duty.

If he didn't have to breast feed the baby, he didn't need to take all that time.

Its like vacation days at work. If you have then , you might as well use them.

At the very least he could have stood in his plush back yard and telecommuted.

Knocking out one of the Giants pitchers would have sufficed.

I was gonna spring that after any comments responding to my "Consider this" post. You went straight for the punch line.

yeah the hats look stupider than the Mets themselves tonight.

Great snark from Uni Watch:

So that’s the cap that the Mets wore last night. And you’ve gotta hand it to them: This is definitely the thing to wear if you want to look like you just got off the plane from Kansas and went cap-shopping in Times Square.

Sigh.
