Future Met Lineups That Might Be Expensive to Outfit

Inspired by our side coversation in the IGT about the paucity of letters on the backs of Met uniforms today, I realized the team's current prospect list looks to possibly effect the opposite situation. (Or situate the opposite effect.)

c: Blaquiere (9 letters)
1b:I dunno --- Pascucci? (8 letters)
2b: Hernandez (9 letters)
3b: Rodriguez (9 Letters)
ss: Valdespin (9 letters)
lf: Den Dekker (9 letters)
cf: Nieuwenhuis (11 letters)
rf: Maldonado (9 letters)

Plus, with den Dekker, you'd have to get into different-sized specialty letters and all, plus tricky kerning.

Dykstra for first?

Nicholas Santomauro ?

LF'er... maybe he can play some first as well =P

there's also a Kurt Steinhauer who's also an of'er.

Good call. But he was terrible last year and I'm guessing he's done.

Now, if we have a team with more than one rodriguez... that would mean an extra letter, right?

if we still had fernando rodriguez and a new rodriguez came, we'd have some more letters...

now...if we could find an extra K Nieuwenhuis, we'd be in business

Every penny counts with the Mets now, I'm thinking maybe the rare letters might be more expensive, as are double-wides like W.

2012 Mets to announce return to "classic, clean" nameless look on backs -- home and road.

And are numbers REALLY necessary?

There was a 'prospect' in Spring Training on the back field, wearing #7, named Reyes. No matter how talented the kid might be, that's an awfully big burden to carry isn't it? Or, it's literally Jose's old uniform and they're saving money..

Now we know by they signed Hu this winter -- and why they waited so long before bringing Isringhausen back!

For my son's soccer team we just wrote the kids' names on the back of their t-shirts with a Sharpie. Could work for the Mets.

And hey, it's would be nice work for sharpie.

Not future, but historical, with apologies to Ben if he was working on this:

Past Metly Lineups According to Name Characters

For our purposes here, spaces and apostrophes count as 1 character (Lo Duca = 7, D'Amico = 7). Also, in games with a DH, the pitcher's name is not counted, otherwise, the pitcher's name is included. All players are from the starting lineup. Sorry, no relievers, pinches or substitutes.

Re: Future Met Lineups That Might Be Expensive to Outfit

Great work, Monk. If Hu was in for Murphy and Pagan was back in center, we'd set the record tonight. We have a 48-character lineup, but replace Pridie with Pagan and Murphy with Hu, we'd be down to 43.

I'll be watching this like an insane person for the rest of the year -- or until Hu is released.
