Cringing at the White House, 1986

Courtesy of On The Black, ABC Newsfeed of the Mets being welcomed to the White House after winning the World Series. Very reminiscent of Krusty's reading of "You were in The Blue Lagoon and I'm a blue-haired goon...what the?" when he was presenting with Brooke Shields the cartoon awards.

Reagan wrestling with the pronunciation of Orosco. Bush overselling the callback to some joke about Gary Carter and Central American diplomacy. Wilpon, effecting a JFK accent and promising the Mets would be back in the Rose Garden for more accolades. The sad Mr. Sports (fill in name of mom 'n' pop sporting good store from your hometown) lettering on the back of the jacket presented to the president of the United States.

And I only skipped around. Cringe for yourself.

Way to go, Kerel! Did you hear the violent outburst queston on Iran-Contra as he left? Was that what Gary Carter was involved in?

Where were Davey Johnson and Darryl Strawberry? Didn't see Lenny or Wally either. Mazzilli looked like he was packing heat.

What did "There are no mothers here" mean?

Reagan said "Marvin Thornberry". Can't anybody here read the speech notes?

Well, to be far to President Reagan, the speech notes might have been awful also. Other flubs included "Can't anybody play this here game?" and seeming to say that Stengel actually took the field for the early Mets.

Douche chills.

Camera Carter all over Bush, even brushing an insect off the V.P.'s lapel.

Mazzilli: 'Uh, hey uh, tanks fa havin' us Mistah President'

Wilpon brings a jacket for The Gipper and chucks an ordinary souvenir stand hat at Bush. 'Here you go sucker, maybe if you work harder, one day you can get a cool jacket like your boss.

And where was Mex and Dykstra and Darling and Sid and Davey and Backman and Raffy and Knight...? Why was like half the team (the good half) not there?

Yeesh, that was painful.

They were probably snorting lines in the Oval Office.

I do remember that not everyone showed up, but I have no recollection at all about why.

Anyone with online access to newspapers of the time might be able to solve the riddle. I do recall it getting some coverage at the time.
