Posada pissed ...

Frayed Knot

... about something.

Slated to hit 9th in today's lineup, Posada told reporters prior to the game that he wasn't mad about it and how he realized that his hitting put himself in that position.
But then he went into Girardi's office about an hour before first pitch and told him he wasn't ready to play. "There's no injury" involved is about all Cashman will say. Apparently Posada will have something to say after the game.

Speculation ranges from a retirement announcement (and walk out on $13 mil - not bloody likely) to a suspension from the team for refusing to play, to the team taking steps to terminate his contact unless this mini-strike ends.

BobKlap Posada in total no-win situation - salary, reputation, playing time - all at stake. Not even Jeter can back him on this.

Um yeah , Jeter is well known for sticking up for his team mates.

Re: Posada pissed ...

The postgame parade of hanging Posada out to dry may have been the most enjoyable MFY moment since 2004. At least as good as the Rangers bouncing them last October. Girardi made him sound like a pouting head case. YES was all "no, there's nothing physically wrong with him." And Posada didn't do himself any favors with "I needed a day."

You know what day Real Yankees don't need? A game against their archrivals when then their archrivals' ace is on the mound.

Re: Posada pissed ...

What's more True Yankee-- opting out of the lineup against your team's chief rivals when your team's struggling offensively because you're hitting ninth (when you're basically on the roster as an honorarium anyway), or being the chief figurehead of an organization that [crossout:3k5unuaz]perpetually sucks itself off about[/crossout:3k5unuaz] prides itself on class and practically running to the mics postgame to BURY that first guy?

I say the second.

The only post-game quotes I heard were Posada claiming he needed the time to "clear his head"..
When a follow-up asked if this one game accomplished that he added something along the lines of, 'no, I'm going to need more time'.

OK this could get interesting. Not least of which because between the DH spot and the Yanx carrying 13 pitchers Girardi starts the game with just 3 bench players: Posada, the backup IFer whathisname, plus and Cervelli the backup catcher.

One can also read some Thor-like succession-bitterness backstory here, as Posada was orignally Giaradi's backup, and there was even increudlity among Yankee fans that a backup with a funny name like Jorge Freakin' Posada, and not Girardi was the catcher on a day when a perfect game was thrown.

Re: Posada pissed ...

I don't know. Even viewed is as neutral as a light as possible (ie. setting aside my MFY-hatred), I can't see any way that Posada was anything other than 100% in the wrong. I guess it was nice that they appreciate a long-time player on their team but the ovations and what not can wait until he decides he's retiring, whether that be this week or at the end of this season.

I think what strikes me as strange is how blame gravitates towards Cashman. I also think the guy is a tool but it's clear that he knows what he's doing and is trying to make that team better/consistently competitive yet his decisions have been "undercut" lately, whether by management (extra $$ to Jeter; giving up the draft pick to get Soriano) or now the fans' taking of Posada's side.

Re: Posada pissed ...

I just think it's natural for fans to back the popular 17-year vet over the suits without really evaluating who might be wrong.

What was fun about this whole thing was that the MFY reaction had all their trademark "protect the brand" moves:
- by the 2nd inning Cashman had gone to every media outlet short of Oprah to get out the story that an uninjured Posada had backed out and, without saying so, let the retirement option hang out there for all to ponder as well as mentioning that they were "reviewing all their options"; ie, "Get me the legal dept on the phone and tell them to bring a copy of dumbo's contract"
- that Posada & Girardi had never been warm and fuzzy with each other even dating back to their mutual playing days was known but suddenly it became OK to talk about it so as to create sides
- the Posada apology not only sounded about as sincere as the one delivered by John Cleese's Archie while Wanda's brother was hanging him upside-down and out a window but it dealt almost exclusively with how he hurt the team and the fans. I think they just dusted off the script they made Zimmer read at knifepoint after his charge at Pedro, the one I think was the final straw in his break with pinstriped hell.

Edgy DC
May 16 2011 06:51 AM
Re: Posada pissed ...

I don't konw if Zimmer was sincere or not, but he cried out loud. Blubbered like a pot of boiling soup.

Siupposedly, the final straw for him was them jerking Torre around. But why he should have to break with them on principle but not Torre (until later) was lost on me.

What the Yanks need to do, very clearly, is to shut up and let Derek Jeter handle all public relations and disciplinary matters. Jeter may not be the same hitter - his average has dropped again to .260 - yet he is the same master of deflection. Even more interesting is Buster Olney saying today that unnamed MFY Brass is unhappy with Jeter for having taken Posada's side.

Jalen Rose on Mike and Mike this morning said the whole Posada thing is none of the fans' business and all should have been handled quietly "in the clubhouse."

I was stunned because:

A) Mike and Mike (and Jalen) were talking baseball.

B) A guy being paid to speak on the radio about professional sports is telling us that something happening in professional sports is none of our business.

I suppose I should not have been stunned about Point A since the Yankees were involved. Had this been an aging star on another team, this would have gotten no mention at all.

ESPN Radio sports priority list:

3) College football
4) NFL draft, which practically counts as a separate sport

One and the same. He also was arrested for drunk driving after having wrecked his car on March 11th just two days prior to the airing of his ESPN documentary The Fab Five in which he stated his belief that black athletes, specifically basketball players, that attended Duke University were all "uncle Toms". He subsequently was suspended by ESPN on April 1st for "failing to disclose" his DUI arrest. I guess he was too busy bad mouthing Grant Hill and Duke University. ESPN has since reinstated Rose to his on air duties.

Re: Posada pissed ...

While his position was unfair bullshit, I have no doubt that that sort of ridiculously over-simplified perspective fueled the Michigan five. And it's good that he aired it. He would have done well to finish it by saying "Of course, we were young and that was really unfair. They were champs and they have reason to be proud of what they've accomplished --- what they're still accomplishing."

But the documentary was designed to lionize that team, and I'm sure he fully expected his BS to be eaten up. People --- in sports, on TV, in society --- get so regularly rewarded for acting like perpetual adolescents, they're always suprised to suddenly be criticized for it.

I don't even know who Jalen Rose is, and I'm unsure why ESPN (radio and otherwise) insists on touting it's other hosts/analysts as "HUGE GUESTS" when they do cameos on other shows. Do I really need to hear Steven A Smith on every freaking show all day long?

I'm pretty sure they could fire everyone and just play canned intros from one host introducing another host who repeats what he said on his own show days ago. Then they'll have that host go on another show to repeat the opinion from the first host. And we wonder why they can get 6 weeks of 'content' from one sentence from a Tiger Woods or a Bret Favre?

Oh, i pretty much have. I only listen in the car. it's a 20 minutes commute to and from work, and around lunchtime. The thing is, I feel like I get the gist of it most days, even with that minimal amount of listening time. I can turn on Michael Kay two times a week and somehow hear the same conversations and arguments.

Relatedly, Francesa was doing his ticket giveaway thing today where he asks simple questions of callers and the one with the most right gets the tickets. Simple stuff "What number did Edgardo Alfonzo wear?" "How many games did WS 2000 go?" "Who hit the first WS home run in 2000? It took 11 callers before anyone got the minimum three questions right to qualify. (I can forgive them, goofing up what Number Bobby Valentine wore once cost me $130, but goofing multiple simple questions? it was hilarious.)

I like to think of it more in terms of monthly priorities. So here's my version of a calendar year as seen by national TV/radio sports geeks:

August - NFL Training Camps plus daily updates from Brett Favre's front lawn
September - NFL Football and the beginning of NCAA football
October - NFL Football, NCAA Football
November - NFL Football, NCAA Football
December - NFL Football + minor Bowl Games no matter how pathetic (because ESPN televises them all)
January - NFL football playoffs + BCS Title Bowl games
February - SUPER BOWL WEEK!!!!!! the biggest geekfest of all. Plus the SB itself and the aftermath. Focus then starts to shift to College hoops
March - College Hoops, College Hoops, College Hoops
April - FINAL FOUR!!! ... NFL DRAFT!!!!
May - NBA playoffs plus (normally) reports from NFL mini-camps. "optional" work-outs, and NCAA intra-squad spring football
June - NBA playoffs and draft
July - VACATION TIME!!!! ... replacement hosts will of course discuss football because camps are almost ready to open and it's never too early to start making predictions
