"Gonna Fly Now" is awesome.

Sadly, when I was in eighth grade, the band room was right near my science class, and for more than a month we could hear the McKenna Junior High band slaying it.

"Eye of the Tiger" - Survivor........saw them sing it live at Thunder mountain IIRC...I felt like punching people in the crowd out after that....actually i felt like that anyway.

Man, the Bill Conti stuff was so much better than the Survivor in terms of churning the emotions. 'Gonna Fly Now' of course is awesome, but I find 'Going the Distance' really brings a greater range of emotions.

I think Survivor ought to be a DIMT torture all its own.

Who the f is Robert Tepper?

FUN FACT: During last week's Pacquiao-Mosley fight, Mosley came out first, led in by a fantastic-looking LL Cool J rocking "Mama Said Knock You Out." Says my cousin, Dicky, "That intro says something." (beat) "That Mosley's old."

So we start going back and forth on what would accompany the intro of the famously-shameless-karaoke-lover Pacquiao. I joke that he'll walk in with Dan Hill walking in front of him, crooning "Sometimes When We Touch." Dicky says, "'Eye of the Tiger,' with Survivor walking in front of him. Mark it down." Sure enough, the smoke machines hiss, the flourescent backlighting kicks on... and out of the smoke pops Jimi Jamison, barking a tuned-down version of "Tiger."

In retrospect, Dan Hill might have been more inspiring.

Anyway... "Gonna Fly Now" is some serious push-you-up-the-mountain stuff. But where it pushes you hard, almost-irresistably in one direction, "Going the Distance" takes you a few different places, and makes your head swim when those victory strings and horns kick in.

I will not choose "Living in America"-- thanks to the 80s production-- but I will defend to the death your right to do so. (Also, if it's karaoke, and I'm on a drink number greater-than-or-equal-to two, then I sure as hell choose "LiA.")

To our sole Tepper voter... you do realize that in real life, "No Easy Way Out" doesn't give you the power to drive without looking at the road, right?

(7-year-old me agrees with you, by the way.)

Stirring song-and-dance numbers from the coming soundtrack of Rocky: The Musical:

"How Come Ya Didn't Break His Thumb?"

"Night, Marie/Fuck You, Creepo!"

"She Ain't Retarded, She's Shy"

Re: Rocky vs Desert Island

For narrative element, no beating "Gonna Fly Now". For my car radio in the summer of 1982, I'll take "Eye of the Tiger". It sounded like it was literally climbing the charts. (Survivor, however, should have stopped at one hit.)

Maynard Ferguson's cover of "GNF" was an excellent sparring partner to Bill Conti's version.

And let's not forget the excellent love theme, "You Take My Heart Away Away," by DeEtta Little & Nelson Pigford. Overcomes its Homer & Marge flashback makeout anthem qualities and takes you right to the couch with Adrian if that is, in fact, where you care to go (yo).

For those dying to know, Wiki says:

Robert Tepper is a singer, best known for his hit song "No Easy Way Out" from the Rocky IV motion picture soundtrack.

Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, Tepper moved to New York where he became a staff writer. He paired up with fellow singer Benny Mardones, and together they wrote Mardones' hit ballad "Into the Night," which earned them a Grammy Awards nomination.

In 1985, Tepper signed with Scotti Brothers and moved to Los Angeles. Actor/director Sylvester Stallone was taken with Tepper's song "No Easy Way Out," which subsequently led to its inclusion in the movie Rocky IV. "No Easy Way Out" climbed into the Top 40, reaching #22 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1986, and momentarily putting Tepper in the public eye. Several European labels, including Ministry of Sound, released "No Easy Way Out" with their own dance versions, and the hard rock group Bullet For My Valentine also recorded the song in 2008. Tepper released two solo albums for Scotti Bros. Records but both albums received little promotion from the label.

That's me, cuz. Personal value. But out of all those songs, it probably has the most insightful lyrics.

I threw all these songs on a playlist (added "Real American" cos it is spiritually connected) and listened to it while doing Rocky's Run. It was sick.

Agree that "Going the Distance" is the best "hulking up" song.

Surprised nobody picked "Burning Heart" for its Mets connection.
