Re: IGT 05/19/11-Nationals @ Mets

Why can't the Mets hit Livan Hernandez? From Brian Costa today, via Rubin:

"Since the Mets released him in August 2009, Hernandez has become a Mets-killer. In six starts against them, he has posted a 1.96 ERA, allowing just 1.09 walks and hits per inning. Against the rest of the league over that span, he has a 4.27 ERA and 1.40 WHIP."

Today seems like a good day to hit him.

Well, part of the reason is that they've been a pretty poor team since they released him in August 2009.

IGT 5/19: After the Rain (Nationals at Mets, Gay Dame)

1. Jose Reyes SS
2. Josh Thole C
3. Carlos Beltran RF
4. Jason Bay LF
5. Daniel Murphy 1B
6. Justin Turner 3B
7. Jason Pridie CF
8. Ruben Tejada 2B
9. Dillon Gee P

AND

1. Roger Bernadina, CF
2. Ian Desmond, SS
3. Laynce Nix, LF (Really?)
4. Jayson Werth, RF
5. Adam LaRoche, 1B
6. Danny Espinosa, 2B
7. Ivan Rodriguez (deceased), C
8. Alex Cora, 3B
9. Brown Junkballin' Grimace, P

IN MEDIA RES:

Gee through two having faced the minimum, thanks to a 3-6-3 double play from the increasingly-defensively-stout Murphy.

Considering they went 1-2-3, Reyes, Thole and Beltran worked Livan a little bit, seeing 20 pitches. Of course, against Senor Frisbee, that's about as meaningful as bailing 20 gallons of saltwater from Titanic.

The Pirates put that super-shift on for LaRoche too. I was watching and wondering what happened to the thridbaseman.

He somehow doesn't seem good enough for that treatment. Worked like a charm, though.

So, five innings. Are we allowed to talk yet about that thingie we're not allowed to talk about? At least using oblique and non-specific references?

Howie's an excitable feller, and generally an exemplary Metsian. That doesn't mean we have to follow his lead in everything, does it? (After the first 1-2-3, I'm counting. After the first four 1-2-3s, I'm counting down.)

I'm just enjoying Gee's competent pitching for the moment. (It would figure, however, that he'd be doing this when I had access to neither live radio nor TV coverage.)

Re: IGT 05/19/11-Nationals @ Mets

Ah yes. That was the game where Cuzzi had previously unnecessarily escalated an argument with the Mets dugout (and specifically, Razor Shines) about whether a Giants batter's foot was in the box or not.

Given my vantage point (see if you can spot yours truly at the very beginning of the video - lower left behind the plate) I took the opportunity to let Phil know what I thought about his umpiring. The downside to this was that the Giants fans around me also learned Mr. Cuzzi's first name and took every opportunity -- but in particular, after this play -- to let him know how they felt.

Given that these two calls now have gone our way I'll have to remember to tell him it was nothing personal next time we run into each other.
