With the fog giving the place a Wuthering High-Fastballs kinda feel, they'll try and start on time. Coleman's debut against Metsie, so the tops of the innings should go quickly, at least.

In other NL East news: - Phils tied up with the Reds heading for the 9th. Cincy out-hitting Philly (and Halladay) 12-6 but had to play catch-up just to get it here. - Nats lose again to the Brews - Atlanta got a 2R HR from Brooks Conrad (sounds like the guy who squandered your 401K) in the 11th to beat Pittsburgh. Pirates loaded the bases in the home 9th with one out but hit into a GiDP - Marlins are in San Fran

After 5 it's official, I got that but doesn't each team need to have the same number of half innings afterwards? I'll never understand these official game rules. Sometimes they call it after 5, sometimes they play it over, sometimes they pick it up from where it stopped, sometimes they play til 2 in the morning, sometimes they stop after a certain time. Drives me crazy.

The only way your scenario would affect things would be if the Mets took the lead in the top of the 6th -- THEN the Cubs would need to bat. But if the rains came in mid-inning with the Mets already ahead then the inning wouldn't count but, so what, the Mets would win anyway due to the Cubs having their five whacks at it.

To further complicate things, the only part of the rule they changed recently is that if a 5-plus inning game is tied when the rains come and they can't resume, they will resume it at another date [u:3o7acddu]from that point[/u:3o7acddu]. In the old days (like until two years ago) they would simply wipe out that game and replay the thing in its entirety.

Philly loads the bases in the bottom of the 9th w/one out ... but then fails to score (Domonic Brown - pop out; Polanco - hard ground out) and it's on to the 10th.

Halladay went 7, but they've used 6 other pitchers. Hendon in with only Baez in reserve.

Bottom of the 16th now and the Phillies still have a backup catcher on the bench but they left Baez, their last reliever, in to hit. He strikes out leading off the inning.

After loading the bases but failing to score in the 11th (which is where I checked out) the Reds only got one hit for the remainder of the game - a 2-out single in the 15th. Also managed one walk and a HBP (Valdez's only base-runner allowed). Not that the Phils did much better (2 singles and a double between inning 12 & 18) until finally scoring in the 19th on a single, walk, bunt, IW, and Sac Fly Phils were going to re-activate Jose Contreras off the DL for today's game anyway so that'll give them an extra arm both for today's Day game and for our series.

Looks like the Marlins also won in extras while most of us were examining the insides of our eyelids. Giants scored 4 in the 9th to tie the game 6-6, only to go on and lose in 12 (thanx G. Mota). So of the 5 games involving NL East teams yesterday only one went regulation innings as the Braves, Fish & Phils all won in extras while the Mets took the shorter route to victory. Nats lost to Milwaukee in standard fashion. That's six straight wins for the slow-starting but suddenly-hot 2nd place Brew Crew and seven losses in eight games for the last place and sinking Nati'nals.

You're never as good as you look when you're winning, but the Brews are looking beastly since their seven-game losing streak to start May. Damn good for a team carrying Carlos Gomez's bat in the lineup in order to have him cover the vast amount of open space in the outfield between Ryan Braun and Corey Hart. If Casey McGehee is able to get his bat going, this could be the juggernaut of summer. I think the Cards are only renting first place.
