Jose vs. David vs. the Krane

G-Fafif
May 25 2011 02:11 PM

With his fifth-inning infield single off Ryan Dempster in Chicago, Jose Reyes last night passed David Wright for third place on the all-time Mets hit list. He also moved within five hits of Cleon Jones in second place.

METS ALL-TIME HIT LEADERS
Through 5/24/2011

1. Ed Kranepool 1,418
2. Cleon Jones 1,188
3. JOSE REYES 1,183
4. DAVID WRIGHT 1,182

Jose had the advantage of David being on the Disabled List, which is where Jose sat when David passed Jose on September 3, 2009 with a single to right off Matt Herges at Colorado. David, incidentally, spotted Jose (first hit: June 10, 2003) a 113-hit lead before putting his first hit on the board on July 22, 2004.

Breaks my heart to think they may not be going at it in the quest to pass Ed Kranepool and then to see who gets to 2,000 first.

I don't doubt he puppetmastered the Madoff debacle just to make sure Fred would have to let Jose go...just as he was mentally fracturing David's lower back.

Who do you think whispered in Steve Phillips' ear to let Fonzie walk?

I want to give this optimism carryon a go for a while.

I see no reason at all why Reyes will not only surpass Edward Kranepool on the hit list but he'll get 2000 hits as a Mets player.

I don't share the Reyes optimism, but...

David's only 236 away and he's signed through next year (and then still has a club option).

I believe that if he's healthy he will eventually be the Mets hits leader.

Yes, that's fine. Let's get rid of those guys so that when Yankees fans talk about their Ruthian, literally, records and mention guys like Gehrig in the record books we can talk about our Ed Kranepool.

yeah. I don't really mean it as a Yankee comparison. I've been watching their hits flip flop for a while now, and the idea that you could've a friendly 'race' to Kranepool and to 1500 and to 2000 with the fun-loving left side of the infield for years to come has to be marketing gold no?

I envision a Sosa-McGwire type race to 2000 in 3-4 years with them having fun with it. Wright joking that Reyes has the advantage because he bats first. Reyes snipes back with "You have more WS hits though!"

Re: Jose vs. David vs. the Krane

Carlos Beltran at No. 13, with 819, unlikely to catch Keith Hernandez (939) for twelfth before he departs.

Next among active Mets on the franchise hits list:

T-61. Angel Pagan 309
95. Daniel Murphy 209
T-108. Ike Davis 177
T-153. Jason Bay 112
T-168. Josh Thole 96 (tied with Willie Mays)
T-220. Nick Evans 54
227. Ruben Tejada 51

So even with the Krane providing the relatively low ceiling, it's never easy to keep Mets around long enough to get up in Ed's rarefied air...which is why it will break my heart if the two players within hitting distance of Eddie doesn't get a shot at breaking the record.

Reyes' all time franchise run record is soft and reflects, more than anything else, the Mets historical failure to develop and keep long-term, offensive powerhouse players. Reyes' 660+ runs wouldn't top, or even come close, to matching the record holders in runs scored for any of the Mets' expansion contemporaries, or any of the four 1969 expansion teams:

Angels - Garrett Anderson 1,024
Colt .45s/Astros - Craig Biggio 1,844
new Senators/Rangers - Rafael Palmeiro 958
Pilots/Brewers - Robin Yount 1,632
Royals - George Brett 1,583
Padres - Tony Gwynn 1,383

Even ignoring all statistics pre-1962(*), the Mets franchise runs scored record is still the softest in all of MLB.

Red Sox - Carl Yastrzemski 1,745*

Re: Jose vs. David vs. the Krane

Not counting pre-1962 stats(*), the Orioles have at least seven players who scored more runs than Jose Reyes:

Orioles
Cal Ripken 1,647
Eddie Murray 1,084
Brady Anderson 1,044
Brooks Robinson 991*
Boog Powell 796
Brian Roberts 775
Al Bumbry 772

I say "at least", because my source (Baseball Reference) lists only the top 10 franchise record holders for the various statistics BR lists. So in theory, the 12th or 13th all time Oriole run scorer could also have surpassed Reyes' run totals.

But we'll always have 1969.

With two more triples today, Jose Reyes increased his Mets career triples record to 91. Since 1962, only nine other players have hit more triples for one team than Jose Reyes -- one less player than before today's game. Today, Reyes passed Rod Carew (90 triples for the Twins) on that list. Who are "the nine"?

*Upon edit: I missed the since 1962 part of the question. Ty won't quite qualify, but I'm still sure his triple totals would make most of the rest of this list pale by comparison.
Even eliminating his early years (pre-1962) Wille Mays might still have a chance of making the list.

Hints:

The two remaining players batted lefty, exclusively.
One player hit his triples for an AL team; the other for an NL team.
One player has the same first name as one of the correctly guessed players.
One player, just like Roberto Clemente, made this list even though some of his triples were hit prior to 1962, and thus disregarded.
Both players are retired, were All-Stars, received MVP votes and were Gold Glove winners.
Both players made the cover of Sports Illustrated (back when that magazine mattered).

I'm withholding some other hints that would make the identification of one of these players very easy. I suppose that this is another hint.

Brett was a logical answer. Great hitter, long career in one place, plus Kaufman/Ewing Stadium was a great doubles/triples/inside-park HR spot (astroturf and funky corners).

Re: Jose vs. David vs. the Krane

Baseball Reference lists the top 10 career leaders for each franchise in OPS+ (OPS adjusted for league, year and park effects), 1500 PA's min. I compiled a list of each franchise's all-time leader, again, not including stats from prior to 1962. However, lacking the formula for OPS+, I was unable to calculate the post-1961 OPS+ for any player whose career encompassed both the pre and post expansion era, and so my leaders list consists solely of players whose careers began no earlier than 1962. There were only two instances when the OPS+ franchise leader was a player whose career straddled both eras: Hank Aaron (Braves) and Harmon Killebrew (Senators/Twins).

I'll post the list later on, but first some trivia.

Among players whose careers began no earlier than 1962, five players are the career OPS+ leaders (1,500 PA, min.) for two different franchises. Five! Who are they?

All wrong answers. But Robinson was very close. He's the Orioles all-time OPS+ leader and very close to the Reds all-time OPS+ leader. BTW, even without knowing the numbers, Rose and Robinson have to be mutually exclusive guesses, right?

... and a rare, Kineresque appearance by the Firecracker to add Ramirez to the list.

1. Mark McGwire - A's & Cards (HahnSolo)
2. Fred McGriff - Padres & Blue Jays (JCL)
3. Manny Ramirez - Indians & Red Sox (VCF) (tied with Thome for Indians record among post-1961 players; Shoeless Joe Jackson, all-time Indians OPS+ leader); (all-time Sox OPS+ leader, Ted Williams)

One trick to this trivia question was to focus on the min. 1500 PA requirement -- roughly three seasons worth of game-time. OPS+ is a rate stat, and therefore, we weren't necessarily looking for players like Yaz or Stargell, who had to play for the same team for about two decades to accumulate their counting stat franchise records.

The other two twofers are:

Vladimir Guerrero - Angels & Expos (tied for Rusty Staub for all time Expos/Nats OPS+ career leader)
&
Gary Sheffield - Dodgers & Marlins.

Here's the entire list:

Adj OPS+ (min. 1,500PA, among players who debuted no earlier than 1962)

1. Barry Bonds – Giants – 199
2. Mark McGwire – Cardinals - 180
3. Frank Robinson – Orioles – 169
4. Frank Thomas – White Sox – 161 (Shoeless Joe, 2d all-time, 159 OPS+)
5. Gary Sheffield – Dodgers – 160 (Mike Piazza, 2d all-time, 159 OPS+)
6. Brian Giles – Pirates – 158 (Ralph Kiner, 2d all-time, 157 OPS+; Honus Wagner, 3d all-time, 154 OPS+)
7. Gary Sheffield – Marlins – 156
8t. Mark McGwire – A’s – 155 (3d all-time; Jimmie Foxx, 174 OPS+ #1)
8t. Manny Ramirez – Red Sox – 155 (4th all-time, Ted Williams 190 OPS+ #1)
8t. Alex Rodriguez – Rangers - 155
11t. Richie Allen – Phillies – 153 (2d all-time; Elmer Flick, 156 OPS+ #1)
11t. Joey Votto – Reds – 153

16t. Jeff Bagwell – Astros – 149
16t. Fred McGriff – Padres - 149

Re: Jose vs. David vs. the Krane

Lance Johnson's September 1996 had the kind of finishing kick worthy of his nickname: 45 hits, including 10 doubles and 4 triples. If Reyes wants to catch the One Dog, he'd better be close to 200 by the dawn of September (if he's still here).

John Olerud had 45 hits in August 1998. Jose had 40 in May 2011.

Mets media notes today said Wright passed Cleon for second place last night. Howie read it as if it were fact. Later turned on the TV and heard Gary said he "misspoke" when he read the same thing and corrected the order to Kranepool, Reyes, Wright (though Keith immediately sold out the PR department for having it wrong in the first place).

Obviously not enough Metsian big shots tracking Jose vs. David vs. the Krane.

Not for nothing, but I noted that error months ago (it's been listed as Wright needing X hits to reach 2nd for a while)

Especially on the radio when they're trying to shove things into between pitches, even the best often just read it without processing what they're reading. It's up to the color guy to analyze it. (good job Keith, bad job Wayne?)

From 2005 through 2010 Wright played no fewer than 154 in a season and no more than 160, in those six seasons he hit 176 and better four times , he dipped to 164 in 2009 but played in only 144 games. His most hits in a season came in 2007 with 196 hits in 160 games.

Wright can do it.

a 'safe bet' is what I meant. I'd say the odds are in favor of it happening.

but then, I'm going to bet on the Mets to win the World Series too. But my logic there is a $5 investment pays for my Jose Reyes WS Jersey.

Re: Jose vs. David vs. the Krane

That's according to the Bill James Career Assessments tool. I question it's applicability, but it seems useful. It seems like one injury marred year can do tremendous damage to career projections, but I guess they can do tremendous damage to careers.

Alex Rodriguez is currently at 97%. Chipper Jones is at zero. Seems kind of shortsighted to me. (Intuitively, I'd place it at 90% and 20%.)

Moreover, if Luis Castillo is 36 and getting only 120 hits per year, you know he's not long for the game, or at least for anybody's starting lineup. But if Jim Thome is getting 120 hits per year, he'll still be able to hang around, because his power keeps him in the game. But that's not a factor.

excerpt:

Mets willing to trade Wright: source

Word continues to circulate in baseball circles that the Mets will be willing to discuss David Wright in trades this offseason as part of a complete facelift/rebuild away from Wright and Jose Reyes.

“We will listen on Wright for sure,” a Mets official told me during the week. “We know we are not going to win it all in 2012. We have to hope the Phillies get old and we are in position to take advantage of that in 2013-14, and we have to figure out ways to speed the process to get there.”

In other words, if the Mets could find the young, defensive-oriented center fielder they crave plus an arm or two in exchange for Wright, they will seriously consider it.

The team the Mets are focusing upon the most is the Angels, who they know have had interest in Wright previously and, in Mike Trout and Peter Bourjos, have two young center fielders. The Angels will not move Trout, who made his major league debut at 19 last year and is seen as a five-tool cornerstone to their future.

But Bourjos is a possibility. Two different talent evaluators told me they thought Bourjos was one of the three best defensive center fielders in the majors last year. Bourjos, who turns 25 in March, also hit .271 with 12 homers and 22 steals. If the Mets are able to get Bourjos and one or two arms from a group that includes Tyler Chatwood, Garrett Richards and John Hellweg, it could be enticing because there also would be a significant amount of saved money for 2012 — take your pick if that ends up in ownerships’ pockets or reinvested in payroll.

Dealing a popular established player such as Wright for relative unknowns would be a hard sell to an already embittered Mets fans base — especially if it coincides with losing Reyes this offseason, as well.

However, officials who have worked with Mets general manager Sandy Alderson depict a leader unafraid to make unpopular decisions if he believes it will be in the long-term good of the team. It is clear that Alderson is trying to accumulate as much high-level, cost-certain talent as possible to build around as a way to gain both long-term financial flexibility and the ability to make trades from a storehouse of strength.

Keeping Score: Bad Day for Mets, Good Day for Kranepool
By KEN BELSON

As the Mets get dressed up for their 50th anniversary season, it is worth noting that they have never had a standout position player who stuck around long enough to produce big career statistics for the team. The departure of shortstop Jose Reyes, who is set to join the Miami Marlins as a free agent, continues this trend.

The best everyday players in Mets history — Keith Hernandez and Mike Piazza — each arrived in Queens from somewhere else, had five solid seasons before starting to fade, and ended up finishing their careers in another city.

John Olerud hit a robust .315 as a Met but spent just three years in Flushing. Cleon Jones was a homegrown talent who came close to winning the batting title in 1969 but never neared that promise again.

Darryl Strawberry was pegged as the next Ted Williams, but he never really lived up to his billing, was gone after eight seasons, and then had a championship encore as a Yankee.

This shortcoming, the inability to produce an impressive player who stuck around for his entire career and left a heavy statistical imprint, is all the more glaring because the Mets share the city with the Yankees, who can point to Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, who got his 3,000th hit last summer, and others.

The Mets, in contrast, have Ed Kranepool, whose total of 1,418 hits with the Mets over 18 seasons, some of them part time, is still the team record, meager as it may be.

Reyes, 28, will stay stuck in second with 1,300 career hits as a Met. He would, of course, have swamped Kranepool’s total if he had stayed with the team for the rest of his career, but the Marlins will pay him a lot more than the Mets were willing or able to.

Then there is David Wright, who is right behind Reyes, in third place, with 1,248 career hits. Also 28, he is also poised to soar past Kranepool (and Reyes), provided he is not traded this winter, or next June or July. But he just might.

It is true that the Yankees’ history is much longer than the Mets’, and that they have had many more years to cultivate players who stuck around forever, or close to it, and put up memorable career numbers. But even when all the seasons before 1962 are tossed aside, the Mets still fare poorly.

The Elias Sports Bureau looked at all current 20 major league teams that existed in 1962, the Mets’ first season, and tracked each of those clubs from that point through this season. Within that five-decade time frame, it determined which position players had put up the best career numbers for those 20 teams, limiting the categories to hits, home runs and runs batted in.

Anything a player did before 1962 was tossed aside; anything he did from 1962 and beyond was in play. The hundreds of home runs that Willie Mays hit for the Giants before 1962 were not part of the calculations; the hundreds he hit after the start of the 1962 season were. The same with Hank Aaron.

Using this formula, Elias said, the Mets are dead last in all three categories.

Take home runs. Barry Bonds hit 586 of them in a Giants uniform during that period, while Mike Schmidt socked 548 round-trippers for the Phillies. Strawberry, the Mets’ career leader, hit a more modest 252. (The Yankees’ leader for the 1962-2011 period is Bernie Williams, with 287. The Yankee’ career leader, of course, is Babe Ruth, with 659 from 1920 to 1934.)

Strawberry also holds the Mets’ team record for runs batted in, with 733. But that is fewer than half the number compiled by Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski, who has the most runs batted in from 1962 to 2011, with 1,764. Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles is second at 1,695.

The disparity in hits is the most startling. Kranepool’s 1,418 is a million miles from the 3,358 Pete Rose piled up while he played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1963 to 1978, and then 1984 to 1986. In fact, five players in all — Rose, Jeter, Ripken, Yaztrzemski and Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros — had more than 3,000 hits for one team from 1962 to 2011.

Meanwhile, the Mets do not get to 3,000 hits even when you add Kranepool and Reyes together.
Of course, some of this statistical paucity will become a moot point if Wright, at least, sticks around in Flushing.

Having been called up by the Mets in 2004, he has become the team’s career leader in doubles, with 281, and with 725 career R.B.I. is just eight short of Strawberry’s mark. He also has 183 career home runs, and needs 70 more to surpass Strawberry in that category.

Wright was the model of offensive consistency until Citi Field opened in 2009. Its oversize dimensions threw him off stride and contributed to his erratic performance at the plate in the last three seasons.

With the fences at Citi Field coming in, there is a decent chance that Wright will revert back to who he used to be and, if he does, and remains a Met until he retires, he could finish his career with over 2,500 hits and 400 home runs, the kind of career numbers that would add some heft to Mets history.

But he is signed only through next season, with a club option for 2013. He may be here for another decade; he could be gone next month or next summer, if the Mets get a good enough offer.

And if he goes elsewhere, as Reyes now has, then Kranepool — Mr. 1,418 — will rule the record book for a long time to come.
