A tornado set down in Joplin, Missouri, on Sunday, killing at least 89 people, officials confirmed on Monday morning. The disastrous storm took a path that was a mile wide at some points, and emergencies have been declared on both the state and local level. A local hospital had to be abandoned due to damage and fire; the triage unit set up across the street. A Red Cross worker estimated that 75 percent of Joplin has been destroyed. According to the NOAA, the Joplin twister is the deadliest single tornado since 1953.

The devastation very similar to the earthquake/Tsunami in Japan. Stunning images alright.

You drive by a town that's been hit by a tornado, your first response is often "I didn't know there was a dump around here."

Tornadoes are probably the weirdest and scariest things that Mother Nature has to offer. I've never seen one and hope I never see one. My thoughts are with Joplin as they bury their dead and put their town back together.

Greensburg, KS was wiped off the map by one in 2008. (Thanks to evacuations/a smaller, more prepared populace, the death toll was lower.)

The town's residents/leadership saw "green" opportunity in the wake of the disaster, turning the town into the first LEED-platinum compliant town in the nation.

NBC Evening News had on a resident who was clearly in shock and was rambling on and fuck it was terrible to watch, Williams did say before they aried the bit that the woman was in a state of shock.
