This one gets me more than it should. It's like finding out that your favorite action-figure died.

When we first got SKY TV in Ireland in the early 90's me and my younger brothers would watch Wrestlemania , loved Macho Man.

I believe the last wrestling event at Shea was in the late 70s/early 80s...before Macho's run in the WWF.

I was entertaining my friends with my Macho Man impression. It's easy to do, you just have to talk like you're severely constipated.

I dunno, but it's probably some guy in his 40s. Might even be somebody still active.

Randy's father died just last year. I'm guessing there are guys from the fifties and sixties outliving the guys from the seventies and eighties.

Once, while he was matriculating at Herrick Junior High, a physical education teacher questioned whether any of the students could do 100 sit-ups without stopping. Randy exceeded 1,000.

Not a bright thing to do when one of your kids is the son of a world sit-up champion.

Wow. Perhaps I was out of line a few years ago when I told PiazzaFan411 that nobody here cared about professional wrestling.

It's honestly between that one and CF's Latvia thread for me.

It's not that we don't care about wrestling; it's that we don't care about wrestling NOW. Old-skool WWF wrestling from the mid-80s is deeply ingrained in my bones.

I didn't care about wrestling now or then. I do care about cultural insanity and the people behind it. I mean, getting rich by saying "ooooh-yeaahhhh!!" What the hell?

And sit-ups. Sit-ups mean a lot to me.

My sons have gotten into the current WWE wrestling - they recognize it as the performance art that it is.

Re: Randy "Macho Man" (Poffo) Savage (Split from Dead Thread

I was always fascinated by the psychology of pro-wrestling, particularly after reading this quote from the French philosopher, Roland Barthes:

"The virtue of wrestling is that it is a spectacle of excess. Here we
find a grandiloquence which must have been that of ancient theatres .
. . Even hidden in the most squalid Parisian halls, wrestling partakes
of the nature of great solar spectacles, Greek drama and bull-fights:
in both, a light without shadow generates an emotion without reserve.
What is portrayed by wrestling is an ideal understanding of things . .
. wrestlers remain gods because they are, for a few moments, the key
which opens Nature, the pure gesture which separates Good from Evil,
and unveils the form of a Justice which is at last intelligible."
