I-GEE-T, 6/4/11, Mets-Braves: Gee, it's Jair Jurrjens!

Benjamin Grimm

I haven't started one of these all year. Let's see if I have a winning streak in me.

Today Dillon Gee, with a nice 5-0 record, faces off against Jair Jurrjens, with a much less impressive record of 7-1. (He lost a game! HAH!)

Thole and Tejada have more extra base hits in the last two weeks than Bay. They shouldn't be batting behind him, either.

"You know, when we talk about execution, I notice Bay hasn't been among those guys making boneheaded plays. You know, screwups on the basepaths and shit."

"Yeah, get back to me when he's on the basepaths and shit."

"He gets on! He's not getting any extra-base hits, but he's getting his walks, getting hit by pitches, giving his body up."

"How about giving his life up? Can he do that?"

"I understand the frustration, but the options are thin. If we're going to get on a roll, we need him to get right."

"Is the Beiruit option still open? Have we even talked with Beirut?"

Over the last two decades, Doug Sisk appears to have taken the lemons of Met fan disdain and made endless amounts of lemon meringue, lemon chicken, and lemon souffle.

Doug Sisk talking to Burkhardt, he asks him about getting recognized "still" , fucks sake Kev Sisk looks like the driver from Ice Road Truckers you eggit. Sisk scoffed at him and told him he hardly gets recognized as he's "plain" looking.

Bay certainly complied , 0 for his last 15 and wasn't even close on whiffing right there.

Guys?

I like the guy plenty but since someone here pointed out that he always says Guys I laugh , seriously his Sisk interview was a riot.

KB might have the best job in the world for a Mets fan.

You know, taking this park into consideration, if they have to choose between one or the other, Reyes just might be the better one to keep...

OK Terry, I think this is over-managing.
Beato can pitch to the switch-hitting Chipper but can't face LHBs McCann and Hinske with a 5-run lead?!?

I gotta say, as overmatched as we are, and with as many bad breaks and bad losses as we've absorbed so far this year, I am enjoying the 2011 Mets as much as any Mets team since 05/06 (I kinda liked the 05ers).

When they took a cockpunch loss last year, I felt as if they got what they deserved by playing sloppy, passive, poorly piloted loserball. Whereas this team takes bad losses mostly because the other teams have more talent, and not as a result of anything more than that.. And they fight just as hard the next night.

Gee "four pitches and a lot of guts" said Bobby Ojeda in the postgame. I agree with that.

gotta agree , and to add to Ojeda Darling says of Gee that yeah he's a rookie but he knows how to pitch, he has a clue. This is an easy team to like really , we have a bunch of interchangeable players playing around the infield, Uggla got an XBH tonight down third that maybe Wright makes but it wasn't for a lack of effort that Turner didn't make it , same goes for Murphy, Tejada I'm loving .

Go Mets.

Re: I-GEE-T, 6/4/11, Mets-Braves: Gee, it's Jair Jurrjens!

Was at this game with a Braves-fan buddy. At this point, I pretty much only attend Braves-Mets, since he gets me off my bitterness and makes me go to the park. I've had a few conversations with him this week leading up to the series about whether Reyes will be traded, and how much I hope he won't. Now, I'm wondering about how I could feel emotionally attached to the Mets without him.

Also maybe of interest, my RAMETS shirt got a lot of love.

Gee = Poise. More poise than any of the more established starters. Scintillating matchup, as viewed from 404. After the nightly showing of the Get Well Kid video, a spontanoues GA-REE CAR-TER chant went up. Chilling.

Agree with Bucket on the likability factor. Their play is sometimes detestable, but they're not.

I bet it's cause they're exceeding your expectations. If you thought this same team would stay on pace for 95 wins, you'd wanna tar and feather practically all of them.

Yes but I don;t mean it relative to expectations. I just mean that the '11 Mets taste better than the '10s right out of the carton or whatever.

Gee isn't just getting by on guile.
IIRC he led the International League in strikeouts last year, and set a modern Buffalo Record in doing it.
He has stuff, too.

The 2011 Mets remind of previous Minnesota Twins teams where Mauer & Morneau would go down and the rest would sack it up and stay in contention.

Re: I-GEE-T, 6/4/11, Mets-Braves: Gee, it's Jair Jurrjens!

Apparently, Gee added a cutter to his mix of pitches for his start against the Braves. He sems to have developed the cutter on one day's notice, tinkering in a bullpen session the day before the game.

Not only was Gee effective, the rookie was clever, adding a cutter to his arsenal that helped keep Atlanta's hitters off-balance.

"My slider has been real bad, so in the bullpen [before last night's outing], I started throwing a cutter," Gee said. "I said I've got to figure out something here, and I threw it quite a bit during game. It was a new pitch they haven't seen from me."

The cutter helped Gee continue his stellar beginning to the season, as he improved to 6-0 and lowered his ERA to 3.33 on the year, and the Mets have won all eight of his starts.
