IGT 6/8/2011 More Milwaukee... Schlemeel, schlemazel!

Mike Pelfrey pitches for the Mets against Randy Wolf, who hasn't lost to the Mets since 2005. Let's make it happen tonight!

Oh, and don't trade Reyes.

Makin' our dreams come true would include not allowing Randy Wolf to become the first pitcher to beat the Mets with five different clubs (per last night's Snighcast).

It's interesting to see McGehee get dropped a spot in the order. He was getting a little negative feedback from Brewers' fans during last night's game as he is slumping.

Specifically, after the 6th inning Fielder HR, I overheard one fan calling the Mets' manager a dolt for pitching Prince anything in the strike zone while McGehee was behind him in the lineup.

I met Cindy Williams once at the airport a couple of years ago. She's a fat frump. I would not have recognized her or noticed her if not for the fact that she was sitting next to Henry Winkler (they were in town for an auto show).

Why "rest" Murph?

I'm adding Pagan to your list. He batted cleanup tonight even though he still can't lefties. Hernandez noted in tonight's telecast that Pagan entered the game batting .143 against lefties -- the first time I've heard media acknowledge Pagan's suckiness against lefties. Keith's observation, merely limited to the 2011 season, which could be dismissed due to small sample size given the amount of PT Pagan missed this season because of injuries, didn't go far enough. Here's what Pagan did tonight against Wolf:

Struck out in the first, stranding Reyes on third;
Flied out to lead off the fourth;
Popped out to second in the 6th.

I'm with you here. Unless K-Rod needed the night off, he should've entered the game no later than the ninth inning. Given the sudden death nature that defined tonight's game when the Brewers took their last at-bat, Collins, from the ninth inning on, should have used the best pitcher available, subject of course, to availability. Fuck the save and the finish. I'm beginning to wonder if K-Rod's got a secret side deal to share with Terry, some of the option vesting $17.5M that K-Rod's on pace to earn.

Except that it's a pattern that was there Manuel and Randolph and probably with Howe and Valentine also.

Seriously, tie game in the ninth against a leading team... and Thayer gets the call? What is wrong with baseball? Would Dave Johnson go to Gorman? Wouuld Yogi Berra go to Hennigan?

I think you owe it to your team to get the guy most likely to win the game for you in the position to win it. Managing is easy that way and they've somehow made it complicated to protect the priesthood.

Excellent question. It seems crazy to say that you or I know more than baseball lifers like Jerry Manuel, Willie Randolph, or Terry Collins, but in this case, it seems so.

This whole idea of managing to the save rule is beyond insane. I'm waiting for a brave* manager to step forward and call a halt to this nonsense.

Last night was the Brewers fifth walkoff win against the Mets since 2005.

2005: JJ Hardy walkoff pinch-hit single

2006: Bill Hall walkoff HR - I was there, it sucked.

2007: Geoff Jenkins walkoff HR in Tom Glavine's first bid for 300 wins - I was there it sucked.

2008: Mets sweep - I was there, it was great.

2009: No walk off

2010: Corey Hart walk off HR breaks 0-0 tie

2011: Nyjer Morgan walk off double

I'm starting to dread the Mets coming to Miller Park. I'm predicting a blowout one way or another for Thursday.

Thank you (sort of) for cataloguing these because after the Mets took a 6-2 lead and all seemed rosy, I was thinking this could still go awry because I was pretty certain it had gone awry a lot in the recent past but didn't have the industriousness to look it up.

What Turner Field was for too long and Pac Bell was at its opening, Joe Robbie/Whatever Stadium and Miller Park have become in recent times: Met death traps.

And the one time we sweep them, what happens? They snatch the 2008 wild card away at the last minute.

Mets actually have a very positive record at Miller. So to satisfy all trends, we win the series, but the game they lose is walk-off devasting. Then a simple series win against the thieving scoundrels in western PA gets them to .500

I remember those first two games well (and was also at Miller Park for them). As I recall, they both took place on Mother's Day and probably both were hit with those pink bats. Interestingly, the Hall walkoff was the only homer that Bradford yielded in all of 2006.

This is why I will always hate the Brewers. That, and the fact that they belong in the American League and were stolen by Bud Selig.

But getting back to the first point, we never have needed to panic in 08 had the Brewers TCB'd vs. the Phillies in a September series.

Gary made that point too.

Of course the reason they didn't have a lefty is they already used Byrdak to pitch to Fielder, and he didn't get him out. And the other lefty options were demoted for sucking. Couldn't use Niese because he's pitching today.

Good offensive team I would've gone to the save tandem duel closer thing and started with Isringhausen. But gotta get some of these guys right. Beato hasn't pitched well since returning, Buchholz was doing well until he apparently got hurt. Parnell may look good again now, but it's a small sample. But he may be ahead of Beato after last night.

I tip my hat to Fielder there. What I would have Terry do is go to Rodriguez then and there, or if Rodriguez is unavailable, his best available reliever, which I guess he meant to do.

Thayer in the ninth is what chokes me.

Re: IGT 6/8/2011 More Milwaukee... Schlemeel, schlemazel!

I'm confused as to why O'Connor was sent down (lefty) and why Thayer (a mustachioed Parnell) was kept. I know that O'Connor had a few bad outings in a row but I wished that he was around to pitch to Fielder.

What are the odds Parnell will ever be known as a clean-shaven Thayer?

I tip my hat to Fielder there. What I would have Terry do is go to Rodriguez then and there, or if Rodriguez is unavailable, his best available reliever, which I guess he meant to do.

Thayer in the ninth is what chokes me.

I think the logic of Thayer is that it was the bottom of the order and if the Mets were going to win it was almost guarenteed that Braun and Fielder would be coming up in the bottom of the 10th and you'd rather Frankie there.

Because you know he was expecting to bunt at one point in the 10th and play for 1 run, so it's not like Thayer would have a huge cushion.

Well, yeah, Thayer over Rodriguez lost them the game. Isringhausen over Rodriguez cost them the lead to begin with.

Hell, I'd rather have seen Thayer out there to start the 8th.

I've hated this joint ever since they bitch-slapped us around in a mid-week series in early 2001.

In case you'd forgotten what a genuinely strange, probably-slightly-mentally-ill dude Nyjer Morgan is... don't.

Best post-game interview of the year.

That was awesome.

I wonder if the Brewers will take Bay for him.
