You ask me whether I'd swap Niese for Gallardo straight up, and as much as I like-a the Hawkman, I'd do it (and not JUST to root for a guy named "Yovani Gallardo").

But you look at their stat lines on the year, and-- leaving aside pitching win-loss record-- they're surprisingly similar. (3.72 ERA/1.34 WHIP/2.23 K-to-BB ratio/12 HR allowed vs. 3.75 ERA/1.40 WHIP/2.19 K-to-BB/7 HR allowed). Basically, Gallardo gives up more HRs but strikes out more dudes/lets slightly-fewer guys on base... but, yeah, about the same level of effectiveness, from similar-styled pitchers. Of course, Gallardo hits like Carlos Zambrano, only with speed instead of crazy, so... still Yovani. But it's closer than you might think.

I'm going to make the early prediction that niese throws the mets first no-hitter today. today is the day...

Now you've jinxed it. Getting to see a Metly no-no in person would be one of the highlights of my life.

I'll be happy if the Mets can just keep Prince from hitting a dinger.

They had no business pitching to Tejada in that lame looking lineup with Niese on deckle.

Heck, sometimes I wonder why teams don't play four outfielders in that situation.

Really? I was thinking as they did that about how pissed I was when Jerry would (often) walk #8 hitters (early in the game especially) rather than try to set up the pitcher to lead off the following inning.
#1 pitcher going (had an off night but you didn't know that then) vs a 21 y/o #8 hitting middle infielder only in the lineup due to injuries? ... it didn't work out for the Brews but I would have done the same thing.

Meanwhile, that's the 2nd time in three days we've turned killer innings into only so-so ones -- 8th inning game 1 was the other.

Re: IGT 6/9/2011 Mets @ Brewers Niese v. Gallardo

Well, I don't mean to suggest that he should have been walked, but rather pitched around with the go-ahead run in scoring position.

Meanwhile, the Mets are up 11 baserunners to two, but only one Prince Fielder swat seperates them in the column that counts.

More or less the same thing.

I would have gone after him. The fact that he couldn't get him was probably the first clue that it wasn't Gallardo's night.

I've seen much more blatant examples of obstruction not called than that one with Prince/Pagan. I didn't see how he obstructed him at all.
Not that it ultimately mattered.

How has Fielder gotten anything to hit this year, what with the black hole of productivity that is Casey McGehee hitting behind him?

Niese at 84 pitches through seven. Can we do something radical and use the bullpen on an as-needed basis tonight?

D-Dad was adamant that the obstruction call was a good one. Obstruction does not require contact; it only requires that the fielder be in the way of the runner when the runner is trying to move forward.

Go-Go goes down for strikeout number eight.

Let's Niese them out here and get another run(s) and save-proof this thing.

Niese pacing 170 strikeouts. If you recall I predicted he has an outside shot at 200 if he were to improve tonight. (i.e. pitch like tonight more often)

I also asked you who would have more strikeouts, Niese or Wright. I think we've answered that one.

How about taking two of three from one of the top three or four teams in the league?

And the hottest team in the league?

And the home-field-advantagiest team in the league?

Yeah, I know it could've been a sweep, but stillage.

I always wonder about that. All these silly gifts they get for things like that. You think Angel Pagan is actually hanging out in Grand Central? Probably hands it off to a friend right? Tips his driver with it?

Pat Zachry once told a story about trying to use the Getty gift certificate he got for appearing on Kiner's Korner and the gas station attendant looking at him like he was nuts.

I'd keep Angel away from raw seafood. That's just me.

We know Reyes never uses his!

Honestly I wonder if they even get the certificates. It's really just a sponsor thing right? They probably mail a handful of them to WFAN to give out, and Francesa uses them.

And Nick Evans gets his walking papers - DFA'd (according to Collins after the game).
Does this mean we expact to see a Lucas Duda sighting very shortly?

I think it does and I don't like it. Evans hasn't done much (neither has), but gives them more balance and versatility, especially with Bay sitting.

I guess they're facing some righties in Pittsburgh and want to give Duda Bay's cuts.

Well, the Mets obviously don't feel that way. They weren't really using Evans much. 17 PA, no hits, 5 walks.

Personally I would've ditched Harris for Duda.

Re: IGT 6/9/2011 Mets @ Brewers Niese v. Gallardo

Fun game and a fun series. The Mets have won the last 4 games I've attended to see them play in person. I like Miller Park more and more each time I visit it.

I didn't miss not seeing Bay in the lineup. It was really nice to see an offense without Wright and Davis score some runs against one of the better pitchers in the league in Gallardo. The Mets really impressed me this week.

I think we saw the Brewers big weakness this series: facing left handed pitching. Capuano and Niese both chewed up a lineup where the only lefty hitter of merit is Fielder.

Very nice series to be at Monk , you saw some great baseball, and some bad of course, still had to be nice to see a Mets team this scrappy nearly take all three.
