IGT - Mets @ Braves; 6/14

Frayed Knot

It's past midnight (when we let it all hang out) so I'm within the framework for starting the IGT

Niese goes up against Jair Jurrgens
Lineups to follow in like 17 hours or so.

Harris is apparently 7-14 lifetime + 2 walks against Jurrjens (credit to Rubin via Twitter).

I wonder if Tejada at 3rd and Murphy at 2nd is a stronger defensive alignment.

What to do with him?, sitting him for a day then playing him for two and sitting him again isn't working.

Or Muffy at 1st, Harris at third and Duda in LF.

At any rate, shitty D at the corners, but Niese is our best K man.

Well, the idea here is to sit him against those 'really tough' guys figuring he's more likely to 'break out' against someone less tough on him. I personally don't agree, in fact, maybe bearing down to face a tougher opponent helps raise his level of play.

Maybe he can have a key pinch hit off Venters or something. Who, btw, always makes me wonder if he has a brother Marvin Gardens.

Murphy is hard to figure sometimes. He had a lot more minor league experience at third base than Turner, and yet Turner looks perfectly comfortable there. It's not like Harris hasn't made a costly misplay at third, either. I actually like getting Murphy back out there.

I think the idea with Bay* should be to gradually decrease his playing time as he continues to fail, and gradually increase it if/when he begins to succeed. I don't think being in the lineup should be an all-or-nothing proposition.

*I think it should be the idea with everybody.

Ron then compared him to a quarterback reading the field, because Ron has a hard time grappling with the Mets' existence from the time he left in 1991 until he returned.

Murphy certainly looks fine at third to me. Definitely has the arm.

I'd like to go back in time and shake up Jerry for his belief that Murphy couldn't play infield if he couldn't play outfield.

I'd like to go back in time in general.

Uggla homers off of Izzy to make this a one run game.

Larry looked like he was going to tie the game, but Beltran made a nice catch for the second out of the 8th, and then ends the inning with a ground out.

"Where is Guys! Now? Is he in the bleachers, the photographer's booth, outside the locker room, the broadcast booth? He could be anywhere! Tune in to SNY at 7 PM tonight and find out where Guys! is. You can also watch the Mets play the Braves."

SNY strains to find as much for Guys! to do as possible. What they don't realize is that it detracts from the game which is what we are there to watch. If they want to make Guys! the star of the post-game, fine. If they want to make him the #2 announcer in the radio booth, fine. But SNY is handling this very badly. Just let us watch the Mets.

In the 2011 remake of the 1985 classic Just One of the GUYS!, Kevin "Guys!" Burkhardt goes undercover as a useful part of a regional sports network's broadcast team until everybody finds out that it's all just a charade and his saturation presence couldn't be any more useless.

Well, it could be, but that's for the sequel, Just One of the GUYS! I was talking to Dan Warthen before the game and he told me something really interesting about the way Tim Byrdak has changed his bullpen routine, as Brian McCann doubles into the gap off R.A. Dickey...Tim now stretches, then throws and then stretches again...McCann is caught off second...Dan says Tim really gets a little extra boost that helps him against righthanded batting...McCann rounds third and is racing for the plate...and we're seeing the results of that change of routine in outings like Tim had Tuesday when he got the Mets out of that jam in the seventh with two on and one out...McCann is out at the plate...GUYS?

Remember that there was some other outfit that wanted to hire Burkhardt a year or two back but Mets/SNY wouldn't let him go or share him.
Maybe as a result there was some sort of promise made to him of more air time.

Re: IGT - Mets @ Braves; 6/14

They can give him pre-game/post-game, let him do an interview during an inning break, or bring his sideline subjects up to the booth where the regular announcers can interrupt him for action. Or let them interrupt him and cutaway anyhow.

Anyhow, sole possession of third place and passing Florida in the Wild Card standings as well, without the benefit of power, is a good night's work. Next up is another crack at Pittsburgh.
