IGT 6/16 - Mets v Braves

The Braves, as it turns out, became an [u:6xb1p6y5]over .500 team as a franchise[/u:6xb1p6y5] with their Sunday night win at Houston - and did so for the first time since 1923!!
But Monday's loss to the Astros dropped them back to 9,983 - 9,983 and now our two wins here have set them two games under the break even point.

Out mission here, of course, is to see that they remain such and hopefully reach that 10K loss mark before they reach the 10K win plateau. It's a small goal as they'll obviously do both before this season is out, but it's one worth pursuing.
Admit it now, you had no idea this series held such critical importance did you?!?

Anyway, going for the sweep tonight with Mr. Dieckey facing 2nd year pitcher Mike (no known relation to Blas) Minor. The 23 y/o LHP was a (somewhat questioned) 1st round/7th overall selection by the Braves out of Vanderbilt University in 2009 who will be making his 5th start of the year and the 13th of his ML career. He was 3-2 last year in 8 starts and is 0-2 so far this season.

Hopefully we'll get to see the old man with the brooms again. If we do I'm gonna celebrate by whipping my hair back and forth ... my hair back and forth.

I did actually have an idea. You know that if the Phillies continue this winning pace, in 35 or so years they'll reach that .500 mark?

The Mets will need a similar winning pace and nearly as long a run.

I thought that sounded too much , Angels, A's, Rangers, Tigers,MFY's.........then the Dodgers on July 4th.

ah , you mean NL East opponent....Phillies in July 15th.

more like half. (actually closer to a third)

of all the original NL teams, the Phillies are the whipping boy. I believe they're the only one significantly under .500. before 2010 they were the 26th worst franchise by total record.

The Mets won't play a NL team at home until July 15th. The last game they played against an NL opponent at home was 6/4. That's quite a stretch.

But hey, we get the Angels, right. Oh boy.

In O-o-T news;
Philly already beat Florida in a day game ... Again!
This time a 2-hit CG shutout by Lee. Last night the Fish got a jump on Halladay and took a 2-run lead into the 9th. They then blew that on a 2-out/2-RBI hit before going on to lose the game in the 10th

That's 7 wins in a row for Philly; 7 losses in a row and 15 of their last 16 for the Marlins

The Marlins are absolute trash. I mean, they won't always play _this_ badly. They'll rebound to hold down 4th place, but geeze.

I had posted a couple of days ago that Hairston's numbers had climbed up to respectability while nobody was looking. His OPS for the year is probably over .800 with the homer.

That being said, he had a horrible AB against Venters (swinging and missing at three pitches out of the strike zone).

Uggla's terrible relay (assisted by Turner's slide) gives us some insurance!

Re: IGT 6/16 - Mets v Braves

The Mets are less of a team without Wright and Davis at the corners.

Some games its' more obvious than others.

I don't believe Terry saw the same game I did.

Primary blame goes to K-Rod.

Carrasco should never have been in there.

Primary blame goes to the Cuntbunter for using K-Rod LAST NIGHT with a 4-run lead in the 9th. Using him 3 days in a row is generally not such a great idea.

Just got home after leaving work with the Mets ahead.
Ugh!
Anyhow, I hope I outlive Chipper Jones.
I'd pay tribute to what I think of him by pouring a pint of Guiness over his grave.
Of course, I'd pass it through my system first.

The only previous time that the Mets ever lost on a balk:

A balk?, that was quite a shock to see blazing across the back of the Daily News.

You just know someone on ESPN is referring to this as a balk-off win for Atlanta.

Well, I kinda knew we were in trouble when after that first strikeout K-Rod pointed into the Atlanta dugout and squawked, "PAYS THE DOCTORS, BOYYYYYY!!!!!!"

Re: IGT 6/16 - Mets v Braves

the duda murphy wasn't the biggest play of the game, and it certainly wasn't the reason they lost.

the homer to brooks conrad was hte single biggest nail in the metly coffin. heading into that at bat, the mets had an 89.9% change of winning hte game. that homer knocked them all the way down to merely a 42.3% chance!

as we enter the tenth inning, the mets have a 50% chance of winning. were they to have made it to the eleventh, they would have retained that 50% chance. with two outs in the bottom of the tenth, the mets had a 46.6% chance of winning. diory hernandez hits a double and its down to 39.5%. now, if duda stays at first and allows the ball to get through to tejada, and presuming he throws out schaefer as we all expect to have happened, the inning is over, and we're back at 50%. but no. schaefer makes it to first, and hernandez is on third. the mets are down to a 36.6% chance of winning. the duda murphy increased the braves' chances of winning by about 3%, but the total swing was 13%. the balk, well, that gave the braves the win.

so there you have it.

duda's murphy, 3% or 13% depending on whether you want to look at comparing it to the expected result. i know a little mechanical guy who'd chatter endlessly about not presuming an expected result.
the balk, 36.6%.
the homer, 47.6%.

but at least frankie didn't get the GF.

No, it was just the most easily preventable thing that contributed to the loss.

Big picture folks.

6-4 road trip. 2 of 3 from both Milwaukee and Atlanta in their parks.

Woefully undermanned Mets team that does not give up.

But do give up late leads, otherwise we'd have swept both those guys in their parks.

Not a bad week, just a frustrating one in many respects.
One game each in Milw, Pitt & Atl were not just coulda won games but were shoulda won.

Really, we were two bullpen meltdowns from having an 8-2 road trip with a sweep of both MIL and ATL.

The starting pitching and offense on the trip was mostly good. I'd like to see them take it to these AL teams now.

Edit: FK is faster than me.

You can woulda-coulda-shoulda yourselves to death if you want to, but if Wright and Davis are on the field maybe the Mets leads are bigger and they aren't coughed up.

gotta agree, this team could be 15 games under and people would say it was expected, Collins and his coaches are doing great.
