Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

Brandon Nimmo, OF, East HS (Cheyenne, Wyo.)
ESPN/Churchill: Nimmo is a high-upside play here and a refreshing pick for the Mets. He's a good athlete and could hit for plus power down the road, but his left-handed bat profiles to play in a corner outfield spot, where his arm fits, too. Nimmo brings a good work ethic to the table and he squares up fastballs regularly. His lack of competition -- his high school does not have a team -- made it difficult for him to get seen by scouts, but he's found a way to get noticed, including an impressive display on the showcase circuit last summer.

Here’s Nimmo’s comment from Baseball America:
With a lean, 6-foot-3 frame with projection remaining, he’s a good athlete and one of the best sprinters in the state. He tore his right ACL playing football during his junior year in 2009 and spent most of last summer playing with a brace on his knee. He’s an above-average runner when he’s healthy, which helps him on the basepaths and in center field, and there’s more to his game than just speed. Nimmo has a pretty, efficient lefthanded swing. He’s short to the ball and has outstanding barrel awareness, consistently squaring balls up and shooting line drives to all fields. He has a good eye at the plate and should be an above-average hitter. As he gets stronger, he could add loft to his swing to turn doubles into home runs.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

BA's take:
Many expected the Mets to take a college player when Sandy Alderson (general manager) and Paul DePodesta (scouting and player development director) took over the organization.
But scouting director Chad McDonald, also in his first year with the organization, took a liking to Brandon Nimmo, the best high school player ever out of Wyoming. And he persuaded the front office to take the player he wanted, drafted Nimmo 13th overall.
Nimmo was believed to be putting out a big signing bonus number in the $2.5 million range. The Mets must have confidence that they can make a deal with Nimmo and keep him from going to Arkansas.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

John Sickels on Nimmo:

The Mets have been conservative in recent drafts, but the new front office promises more investment in the farm system. This is a good test of that philosophy, for Brandon Nimmo has been floating large bonus demands to skip college ball at the University of Arkansas. The Mets are wise to invest in him: he's got an exceptional set of skills and tools.

A 6-2, 185 pound left-handed hitter, Nimmo is a one of the best athletes in the draft and features both above-average speed and power. Most surprisingly, he demonstrats excellent strike zone judgmetn and offensive polish, all the more remarkable given that his state lacks high school baseball. He does have experience in Legion ball and showcase events, and Nimmo has less risk than you might expect given his background.

Nimmo also offers excellent makeup, and this looks like a very fine pick for the Mets.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

The thing is, whatever steps forward the Mets have had this year have mostly come from Omar's leftovers.

Looking at Sandy/Riccardi/J.P.s work so far, you've got:

Bingos: Beato.

Mixed Results: Paulino, Capuano, Byrdak, and O'Connor (speaking charitably on those last two).

Phonies: Emaus, Young, Harris, Hairston, Hu, Boyer, and Carrasco.

None of which is to say that, given the limited maneuverability they've had, they've crashed and burned, only to suggest that these things are more nuanced, and a draft class has to be sliced 10 different ways over 10 years to analyze.

I'm totally against the idea of shitcanning all of Omar's legacy, but would rather try and see where it went well and went poorly and factor that into the future.

That's the game though, obviously the old guy was totally incompetant and the new guy is the savior.

It's unfair the compare the end of a tenure to the beginning of a new one too. Where Omar was operating at the end of a plan and trying to fix/mend/expand on things he'd done earlier, Sandy hasn't made any huge blunders yet and is still setting things in motion.

Also, we can't forget how much we love Ike/Gee/Niese or even Tejada/Meija/Thole/Pelfrey and trash Omar either.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

I don't recall reading anywhere that there was some deficiency in Omar's scouting/drafting. It was his inability to gauge the proper future value of FAs that fucked this organization.

Edgy DC
Jun 07 2011 08:24 AM
Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

I don't think it's the game at all, and Sandy in fact sought to keep Omar in the organization. I think it's the pressure with storyline-desperate critics of the organzation, but it's never so black and white as the back page would have you believe, even when it's a black guy replaced by a white guy. (Two and two, actually.)

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

Keith Law on Verrett:

Verrett will come out early and sit 90-93 but doesn't hold his velocity deep into games, although he does drive the ball down in the zone. He pairs it with a short slider/cutter in the low 80s and a hard changeup; his arm slot seems tough for a slider and he might be a candidate for a true curveball.

His delivery is short and compact with minimal stride, little hip rotation, and no shoulder tilt, so there's good reason he can't generate plus velocity but the potential there's potentially more velocity in there if someone wants to rework his delivery.

Right now he projects as a three-pitch reliever who'll sit 92-94 or so, but he could go higher to a team that doesn't mind taking a risk on a college starter who might need more development time than normal.

Scouts are split on whether his name is Mozzoni or Mazzoni. He has a dark, brooding, boyish face which suggests the intense guy who freaks out when you fuck with his stuff, which only tempts his teammates to continue fucking with his stuff to provoke more freakouts. His heroes are UFC fighters and Rand Paul. Has had two roommates move out on him because it's all about him. Insists he can dunk but and he has been known to spend hours on a side court in the gym working on dunking. Nonetheless, nobody takes the bet because it's just too pathetic the way he lays the ball in and snaps the rim back on the way down and calls it dunking.

Has changed his major from psychology to sociology to parks and rec. (Parks and rec?!)

Nickname is "Cooter."

NOTABLES REMAINING:

-- Nicky Delmonico, C/3B, Farragut HS (TN)-- plus bat who could stick at catcher, Georgia commitment
-- Dillon Maples, RHP, Pinecrest HS (NC)-- low-90s fastball with good movement/iffy command; decent slurvy curveball for strikes
-- Josh Osich, LHP, Oregon State-- threw no-hitter against UCLA while facing Trevor Bauer

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

G: There's a lot out there about Jack Leathersich the baseball player, what does Jack like to do outside of the diamond?
JL: I just like to hang out with my friends. I am big in the weight room; I like to get in there, put my iPod on and go to work. I do like to try and play golf every once in a while. I guess you could just say I like to be a normal college kid. When I am away from the field, I try to relax and keep baseball separate. When I get to the field, it’s all business for me. I like to say there’s a time for baseball and there’s a time to just be a normal guy.

JG: You list Tom Glavine as an influence; have you ever met Tom in person? What about Glavine did you admire (other than the fact you are both lefthanders)?
JL: No, I have never met him. I always admired Glavine for the way he carried himself and went about his business. I think he is as professional as professional gets. He might not have been the hardest thrower, but he knew he was going to get you out somehow. When I watched him play, he was always super confident. I try to base my mound confidence off of what I saw in Glavine as a kid.

JG: You are nicknamed “The Rocket.” How did you garner this nickname?
JL: Oh man, it’s been going on for a while now. I guess it started in the Valley League when I came out of the pen and threw mostly fastballs. It’s always been something that people have called me jokingly. I was called it in Valley as well as at UMass and down the Cape.

JG: What is your mound entrance music and why?
JL: Another One Bites the Dust by Queen. A walk out is all about originality, you don’t want to come out to something that everyone uses. I thought it was a good song to use as a strikeout pitcher. I thought it had a good little ring to it, I’ve used other songs but I felt that one fit me the best.

Depends on your definition of 'crap-shoot'.
If by that you mean that even a first-round pick is hardly a guarantee of success, well then you're correct.
But a 1st round pick is MUCH more likely to succeed than a 2nd, a 2nd more likely than a 3rd, and by the time you reach the 4th round the odds are a small fraction of where they were when you started.

Also throw in the idea that if this draft is as talented as they claim then a mid-round pick this year has even better odds than a mid-round pick in others.
Besides, there were some nice names on that 13's list even if there were a lot of misses in between.
Plus I'd like to think teams are getting better at this as the draft era has evolved although I don't know if facts would back me up there.

After stifling the urge to regurge over the selection of a "toolsy" high school position player in the first round, I began to re-think it.
I'm feeling better about the first two picks.
Sandy and staff aren't looking for a quick fix - players with college experience who might make the majors in a year or two and quickly make their drafting skills look good. They picked players who will need time to develop, and that shows me a commitment to building the organization and player development- a longer term approach.
I like that.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

Draft still going on, Mets have selected many more high schoolers than they typically have, this is where the idea they can challenge slot comes to the test.

Just looking over names, you gotta admire 14th round selection Xorge Carillo, a catcher from ASU and Mexico.

Jack "LeatherRocket" Leathersich says he's jazzed about the blue-and-orange. I've decided to adopt him in fact.

Beverly’s Jack Leathersich said yesterday he plans to forego a final year of eligibility with the UMass-Lowell baseball team after the hard-throwing junior left-hander was selected by the New York Mets in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Leathersich is the highest UML player ever selected.

“Oh my God. It’s unbelievable,’’ said the 6-foot Leathersich. “I talked to the area scout (Art Pontarelli) about 10 minutes before they called. I can’t put it into words. I have one year left (at UML) but I’m definitely going to sign.’’

Leathersich, who turns 21 on July 14, is coming off a 7-3 season with 126 strikeouts in 89 innings with only 26 walks.

“He’s a tremendous player. He came in as a 160-pound kid who threw 84 mph and he left as a 200-pounder who is throwing 95 mph,’’ said UMass-Lowell coach Ken Harring. “He’s won a lot of big games for us. I think he can climb the levels pretty quickly. .?.?. He still has a lot of things to work on but I think he can be a really good pitcher.’’

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

Anybody know if Carlos Leyva is related to ex-major league manager (and ex- Mets minor league coach) Nick Leyva?

I don't even want to think about any relatives of Cole Limbaugh.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

Here's the list of every overall #3 pick. Two Hall of famers drafted within four years of each other -- teammates for many years for the same expansion team that drafted them. Not much star power considering that the list covers almost 50 years of players that were the most sought after in their respective classes .... a noticeable uptick, though, for players who carved out replacement level+, but not spectacular careers.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

From a BA post-draft Q&A:

Q: From a pure talent standpoint (signability aside) what are your thoughts on the Mets draft as a whole?

Jim Callis: I like the way the Mets came out and went after upside. They loved Brandon Nimmo and grabbed him at 13, or else someone would have taken him at the bottom of the first round. Michael Fulmer [44th overall] got overshadowed by [fellow Oklahoma HS pitchers] Dylan Bundy [4th overall] and Archie Bradley [7th overall] this spring, but he has a quality arm. If they sign Phillip Evans (15th round) and Mason Robbins (20th), that would be a nice coup.

Evans & Robbins are high-school players (SS & OF) and from Callis's comment on them I take it that they're are the type that the Mets haven't been drafting in recent years and will take some cash to buy them out of college offers.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

John Sickels' post-draft assessment:

The Mets have promised to be more aggressive in the draft, and this is a good start. ... Nimmo and Fulmer provide plenty of upside at the top, while college picks Mazzoni, Verrett, Pill, and Muno could all advance pretty quickly through the system. There are some more speculative/upside choices mixed in, and if the Mets are really serious about spending money they could see what it takes to steer some of the teen-round-tough-sign picks away from college.

Selected reviews, more via the link:

1st round) Brandon Nimmo, OF, Wyoming HS: He'll want a lot of money to skip college ball at Arkansas, but I think it is worth it. He's got above average tools across the board, good plate discipline, and more polish than we have any right to expect given his background. [bad weather state, no HS team]

1-Supp) Michael Fulmer, RHP, Oklahoma HS: Mid-90s fastball, good slider, needs better changeup but hardly a serious flaw at this point. Also has an Arkansas commitment.

2) Cory Mazzoni, RHP, North Carolina State: Low-90s fastball, sometimes faster, good breaking ball, good splitter, interesting stats. Note outstanding K/BB and K/IP ratios. 3.30 ERA, 137/29 K/BB in 115 IP.

3) Logan Verrett, RHP, Baylor: Good athlete, 90 MPH fastball, good slider, good changeup, good control, not a dominator but has few flaws that can't be corrected. 2.93 ERA, 96/31 K/BB in 101 IP.

10) Matthew Budgell, RHP, California HS: Projectable, velocity inconsistent, Cal State Fullerton recruit. Could go much higher in '14 draft if he goes to school.

OTHERS OF NOTE: LHP Ken Matthews (12th round, California HS) is another Fullerton recruit with average present stuff who could go much higher with three more years of development.
SS Phil Evans (15th round, California HS) got first round buzz at one point but erratic spring and San Diego State commit dropped his stock.
OF Mason Robbins (20th round, Mississippi HS) could have gone 15 rounds higher if not for strong Southern Miss commitment.

FK: Note the "could go much higher in 2014" comments on some of the later round picks. Fans mostly focus on the early rounders (for obvious reasons) but the constant 'Mets are cheap' comments were really misplaced when thrown at top 100 picks applied much better to the mid & later rounds where they usually took few if any chances. Now it's unlikely all of these guys will sign this year, but the ones that do could, if all things go well, turn out to be bargains later on even if they command what seems like a high price now.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

On the other hand, if the Mets have been drafting so poorly - or at least overly cautiously - in the middle rounds in recent years as every "expert" knows, it doesn't really negate the fact that they're getting contributions this season, and significant ones in most cases, from the likes of:

- Josh Thole - 13th Round 2005
- Daniel Murphy - 13th Round 2006
- Lucas Duda - 7th Round 2007
- Nick Evans - 5th Round 2004 (OK, not much of a contribution here)
- Bobby Parnell - 9th Round 2005

plus, although in slightly more round-about ways
- Angel Pagan - 4th Round 1999
- Pedro Beato - 17th Round 2005
and (really stretching things here)
- Jason Isringhausen, 44th Round 1991

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

Like the major-league representatives, the draft-signee roster slouches toward .500:

-- Leathersich (5th), Carrillo (14th), and Missigman (37th) came onboard last week.

-- Draft-eligible sophomore-- and also-North-Dakotan-- Cole Frenzel (7th) joined 'em over the weekend. (It appears "slot" is indeed of little consideration in the new regime.)

A team needs a catcher, and so the Mets sign Jeff Diehl.

Most double entendre-est quote of that article: "Beltran took me down the tunnel.. ."

Sean Buckle looks like he is going to college --- drafted despite having a broken neck.

I think Malcolm Clapsaddle will go to college also, which is a tragedy, I think.

Five days to the signing deadline and no word on Nimmo.
Of course there's nothing unusual about that as even the 1st rounders who agree to something early usually don't sign and announce until the last minute because MLB is afraid that if it's an above-slot signing then other players/agents will use that price to drive up their price. Best to keep everyone ignorant (or so the thinking goes).
Only 1/3 or so of the 1st rounders have signed and most of them from the back end. Front end HS players generally sign late.

Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

Mike Puma sez:

The Mets are confident their No. 1 pick, Brandon Nimmo, will be locked up by tonight's midnight deadline for signing draft choices, but the 18-year-old outfielder's father isn't so sure.
Ron Nimmo told The Post yesterday that significant progress in contract talks still has to be made between the Mets and his son. He called the $2.5 million figure that has been floated "a good number for discussion purposes," but indicated the asking price is a different figure. If the Mets and Nimmo don't strike a deal, the player will enroll in classes at Arkansas next Monday, according to the elder Nimmo.
"[The Mets] have some work to do," Ron Nimmo said. "There's some disparity.
"It's not all about the money. You get one shot at this deal and you're going to have to live off this for six years."

I'd be extremely surprised if he doesn't sign.
As of this morning 23 of the 33 first-round picks are still negotiating as are 11 of 27 supplemental first-rounders and nearly one third (98 of 331) of those selected in the first 10 rounds. Of course many of these guys have actually agreed to terms but are keeping mum under orders from MLB until those deals will be announced at some point today.
The consensus is that all but maybe two of the first-rounders will sign before the midnight deadline.

Round 16 guy, Bradley Marquez (not Brandon apparently) signed with Mets:

Red Raiders’ Marquez signs contract with Mets
By Don Williams on August 14th, 2011 No Comments Printer-Friendly

Texas Tech football player Bradley Marquez on Sunday signed a contract to play pro baseball with the New York Mets and announced plans to continue pursuing both sports.

Marquez signed a three-year contract, according to his agents with Xclusive Sports Management in Houston. They declined to release other details of the deal.

Marquez, a freshman wide receiver from Odessa, was a standout shortstop in high school. The Mets took him in the 16th round of the June draft.

“Coming from West Texas, nobody really expects somebody to play pro baseball simply because West Texas is all about their football, but I am blessed to be able to play both college football and pro baseball,” Marquez said in a statement released by his agents. “It’s something a lot of people don’t get the chance to do, and I’m blessed to have this opportunity and play for a great college as well as a great baseball organization in the New York Mets. Simply the best of both worlds.”

On the Red Raiders’ Aug. 5 reporting day, Marquez said he wanted to play both, whether it was football and baseball for Tech or football for Tech and baseball for a pro team. To accomplish the latter, he was working against MLB’s signing deadline of 11 p.m. Monday.

“I think all the time Bradley did expect to get it done,” his agent, Kyle Dison, said. “He wanted to get it done.”

Dison said going into August to work out the contract wasn’t unexpected considering Marquez’s two-sport preference.

“When (the contract) is spread over three years like that, it just takes a lot of time to do,” Dison said. “Everything had to be cleared through the university, the compliance office, as well as Major League Baseball.”

Marquez will be at Tech during the school year and report to the Mets’ spring-training facilities in Port St. Lucie, Fla., in May.

A 10:35 update from MLB.com:
There's just over an hour to go and there's still no official movement at the top of the Draft board. All eight of the top 10 picks remain unsigned as do all 23 of the first-rounders (out of 33 total) who began the day on the board. Some deals might be done but not announced yet, while some teams are starting to negotiate in earnest now. It's going to be an extremely chaotic final hour, going right up to 12:01 a.m. ET for sure.

The good thing about the late game tonight is that we might get an update from Gary & Ron.
It's also possible that some of these last minute deals will officially get in before the midnight deadline but not get announced for several hours later.

It's good that the Mets signed Nimmo but I didn't get worked up over last night's 11th hour drama. As a Mets fan, I hope for a future where Nimmo is elected to MLB's Hall of Fame -- a NY Met cap engraved on his plaque.

But if Nimmo ever gets into a major league game, even if for just one defensive play, he'll have accomplished more than most overall 13th picks: because most overall 13th picks never ever get out of the minor leagues.

I show 25/46 such picks (54.3%) from the history of the June draft have made it out of the minors. If you're willing to discount the three recent picks who are still at play in the fields of the Lord, then it's 25/43 (58.1%).

Interestingly, 2010's number 13 pick, Chris Sale of the White Sox is the first and so far only pick from that round to appear.

And Keith Hernandez was drafted after dozens of rounds. So what? I didn't say that the Mets should forfeit their picks. I'm just saying that the odds are very long -- so long that right now Nimmo doesn't do anything for me. Hey, six or so years ago, credible people were saying that the Mets were poised to soon field one of baseball's best young homegrown outfields (Milledge, Gomez & F-Mart).

Fair enough. 25 out of 43 instead of 25 out of 46. It wasn't my intent to ignore your numbers. I skimmed your post and overlooked that 25/43 part..

Like that's gonna change anything. We're both talking about historical odds of a thirteener merely playing in the majors --slim--, without even then considering whether he's gonna be a Manny Ramirez or a Lute Barnes.

all these years later, i still think Batmags' overall point, albeit overstated, is sound in that getting excited about particular draft picks in baseball isn't a particularly useful expenditure of time and energy for fans, seeing how few of them ultimately make a significant impact on your team.

Some of that was probably from a BA 'study' which tracked about 10 years of draft picks and assigned them into various categories.
And, yes, the odds of a player becoming a star a lot smaller than one failing to make the majors entirely and considerably smaller than most fans think.

On the other hand, the odds on 1st round picks eventually contributing is a lot higher than those in later rounds and in the top half of round 1 it becomes higher still. Plus the control you get from young players who do make it makes it one of the most cost effective ways of finding good players even as the price of these picks continues to rise.
The other thing that increases your odds of striking gold is to identify those players who you suspect could be top draft picks later on and go "over slot" to buy them out of potential scholarships. That is one thing recent NYM regimes have not been doing but which this front office seems to have embraced.

It's also, you know, like fun to see players grow up in your system and eventually find the big club. Those who advocate not signing this FA or trading for that one because they're already penciling Nimmo into the starting lineup for 2013 or 2014 or whenever deserve whatever disappointment they get, but getting a guy like that under contract is certainly better than not having him.

Edgy DC
Aug 16 2011 07:43 PM
Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

And getting 10 is better still. And when you're rooting for a healthy, well performing organization, you prefer to see them drop another half million on draftees when you know how little (and how little risk protection) a half million buys you on the free agency market. The Nats doubled down and doubled down again on the draft this year, dropping $16.5 million on five players, going over slot several times, signing two guys to major league contracts. Risky? Maybe, but the risk is spread out over a bunch of players over years and years of service, and if they hit on half of them, they score big. And it's all for about what they're paying their underperforming free-agent rightfielder for a season.

Risk: it's everywhere. But it's also relative.

Frayed Knot
Aug 16 2011 08:14 PM
Re: In-Draft Thread - 2011

If everything breaks well for the Nats they going to have a very nice core in a year or two.
- first they not only get the top overall pick two years running but do so in years where there's a clear-cut #1 choice
- then in this year they picked 6th but got the pre-season overall favorite (Anthony Rendon who most touts claimed they'd take over Harper) who fell due to some injury concerns
- and their 3rd round pick (Matt Purke) was considered top 5 material but also had injury concerns plus was a sophmore eligible player who wasn't expected to sign.

No guarantees of course and it cost them a ton of cash to sign all those guys but that's two pitchers and two hitters three of which (all but Purke) might rate a top-5 pick even if one were to combine the last half-dozen drafts.

Was any consideration given to players who slipped in the draft because of signability issues or teams not wanting to pay over slot?
An interesting study would be guys who were higly rated by pre-draft mavens, then slipped down, and comparing them to players drafted at their "appropriate" levels.

The problem with that is that there's never a consensus for where a guy is "supposed to" go.
Players rise and/or fall for all kinds of reasons, perceived money demands is just one of them.

What I find most telling is to get a look at the area around where you're picking and examine those. I think it tends to give a better picture than just looking at the one slot because you get a better sample size and you're not subject to as much variability.

So here is ten years of drafts through 2007 from picks 11 thru 15 in each year.
Of the 50 I count 18 who never reached the majors although six of them are from recent drafts who still have a decent shot at it. (not sure what to make of the fact that most of the failures were early on and fewer recently).
Approximately 15 (depending on your definition) are or were full-time players and starters with the rest falling somewhere in between.

1998

11 - Josh McKinley (HS) SS, Expos -- Never reached Majors, Out of baseball since 2004

And i count about 1/3 to 1/2 of those, maybe 5-8 of the 50, as having had a significant long-term all-star level impact on their teams sufficient for a fan to jump up and down about having them. so that's maybe 10-15% chance of it mattering much. I half figured they were going to 'unveil' him at CF tonight now that the team is home and the media in tow before sending him off but this is probably the better idea. Also, with no HS team, the American Legion season he's been playing (or some such equivalent) has been going on mostly since the draft as opposed to many of the just-signed HS players who have been sitting out for the last two months at this point, so no reason not to keep the momentum going for the final three weeks or so of the minor league season.

I see also from that box score that Mr. Hu has fallen all the way to the GCL to work out whatever problems he's been having.
