Going Solo

Some guys use their status in a big-time band as leverage to launch a solo career, and become bigger than ever. Phil Collins! Bobby Brown! Um... Phil Collins!

Other make an interesting release nonethelss lost to history, as they never had that much respect even from the bands fans. Dave Davies! John Entwhistle! Dennis Wilson!

Then, there's Greg Hawkes --- video-vampin', Cars-decampin' Greg F. Hawkes.

I downloaded that whole rekkid a few months ago. Never saw the video tho. Very nice!

Haven't listened to solo Ocasek but I'd probably say Orr had the best solo record of the Cars.

Here's Easton's best effort. His record was done with songs written by Jules Shear:

Re: Going Solo

Like it. Sounds very Beach Boy. And at least it's a song, and not a five-minute intro into nothing, which is what Hawkes was dealing.

I thought this was going to be a Weiner thread.

Speaking of which, my favorite Beach Boy Al Jardine heats up. He can't cool down.

OK, Al doesn't butter your bread? Maybe Go-Go drumer Gina Schock will. (And seriously, folks, click the Elliot Easton link. You'll be glad you did.)

Found Gina's voice too annoying and had to stop almost immediately. Liked the Al Jardine tune.

Re: Going Solo

Did you pick up on the licks brazenly stolen from "Abracadabra"?

Re: Going Solo

No but I recognized the lyrics from your intro and thought t was gonna be a cover. When it wasn't I forgot all about it.

Re: Going Solo

If you think those sound like Beach Boys voices backing him, you're right.

Visiting the Al Jardine website, and viewing the special guests on the new album: David Crosby, Steven Stills, Neil Young, Steve Miller (gotcha, you self-plagiarizing bastid!), Norton Buffalo, Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, "Flea" (the site feels that quotes are appropriate --- perhaps also for "Bono" and "Sting"), Scott Matthews, Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson (who musta died at least five years ago), Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, David Marks, Glen Campbell, Richie Cannata, Matt Jardine, Adam Jardine, and Alec Baldwin.

Baldwin is really starting to piss me off. He's a crappy enough actor and a world class douchebag. Nobody wants him in films anymore but he lands on his feet in a hit show because he's still bros with Lorne Michaels, and he gets to pretend to be a politician and a musician.
