Air Conditioners

Ok, we need to buy one tonight for the living room space(sounds so gay when I say that), problem is the living room kitchen and bedroom hallway all run together so getting a square footage is hard, the AC unit built into the wall is in the TV area in the wall adjacent to the sliding doors that go to the deck,so essentially the AC would be at one end where we watch TV but would be trying to cool the whole space, third floor so it's hotter than a motherfucker up there right now. So we need and AC that big enough for the job.

Thoughts?

I don't really understand what you're trying to say about your space but my advice about AC in your home is: pay what it costs to get a quiet unit. We have a window AC for the front half of the house, does a great job cooling a large room but is so f'ing loud you can't hear the TV. I pray for it to break. Keep that in mind.

Re: Air Conditioners

Sorry , what size should I get , btu right?

Good call on the loudness, our old one was loud and wasn't adequate for the job either.

Check what your circuits can handle too. My wife's aunt gave us a huge "portable" air conditioner that is absolutely useless because it causes all the electricity to short out.

Re: Air Conditioners

if it's in the wall, take the dimensions of that hole in the wall, and find the biggest thing that'll fit in there =).
my sister used to cool her whole apartment which was 1100ish sq ft with one AC unit - i think her's was 12k btu.

Re: Air Conditioners

I had an AC that was actually too "good"... it cooled the bedroom off nicely but was big and loud (not to mention the energy consumption). i bought a new one last year that is smaller and thankfully quieter. it was worth it even though it takes time to cool off the room now. a QUIET AC is a big deal.

Re: Air Conditioners

One nice thing about the south is that central air conditioning is standard in virtually all buildings. It's whisper quiet and highly efficient. I honestly can't recall the last time I was in a apartment, home, or public building without central air conditioning. It's practically, a matter of survival around here.
