I love watching the Tony Awards - Broadway folks know how to put on a show. Neil Patrick Harris' opening number, "It's Not Just For Gays Anymore," was hysterical. First award - Ellen Barkin wins Best Featured Actress in a Play for The Normal Heart.

In an award given out before the broadcast, Book of Mormon won Best Original Score.

do you get the feeling that, when writing about theater, you're often talking to yourself? I mean, i get that Broadway is an overpriced extravagance that is both financially and geographically out of most folks reach, and so is of interest to a fairly narrow group, and the Tony awards are of interest only to a subset of that already small coterie. but i think it goes further than that... theater as an art form is available at reasonable prices in nearly every community, from small off-off-Broadway shows for $20, to community theater amateur productions to small professional non-profits all around. You can spend more seeing an IMAX movie. I just think its not even on anybody's radar anymore. Its not part of our cultural conversation. which is a shame.
