U.S. Open

... at Congressional CC outside of DC.

Rory McIlroy (not to be confused with Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy) is a ridiculous 10-under through 26 holes and is currently sitting on a 7-shot lead.
Long way to go obviously and the 22 y/o N. Irishman also had the lead going into Sunday at the Masters before blowing up with an 80

Re: U.S. Open

I opened this just as I realized that the US Open Tennis tourney is still months away.

FORE!

Re: U.S. Open

Yeah, I probably should have added the word 'Golf' to the subject heading - at least to make things clear for archive purposes.

Crossword puzzles are tricky like that. A clue will read: [u:3nfpiixx]U.S. Open Winner[/u:3nfpiixx] and you don't know whether they mean golf or tennis and men or women.
A 5-letter answer could be anything from EVERT to LENDL to WOODS to HOGAN to NADAL to LOPEZ

I was pulliing for local-guy Steve Stricker, but he faded away pretty fast in this one.

Re: U.S. Open

Unless and until I get a snide comment out of Vic in these off-sport threads I don't feel like I've properly done my job.
And just think, less than three weeks until the Tour de France starts.

McIlroy finished his round at -11
No one else at this point better than -3 although some have yet to tee off for round 2

If Rory doesn't win this thing there will be serious questions right?

About when Tiger's coming back? I think that'll happen anyway.

Here's the thing though , Tiger is the reason this kid picked up golf clubs but he doesn't fear him , don't think any of the players do nowadays, unlike before.

Re: U.S. Open

Still a ways to go.
If he has another Sunday collapse like at Augusta, then yeah there will.
Still only 22 y/o though so plenty of time to recover. Golfers traditionally peak at a much later age so most guys his age aren't anywhere near where he is now.

Re: U.S. Open

When I saw McIlroy's 11-under score earlier I didn't realize he carded that only after finishing with a double-bogey on the 18th so he just missed going into the clubhouse with a 10-shot lead.
No one had ever even reached -13 at any point during any Open.

NOW there will be some serious questions if he blows this one.
Eight shots clear of the rest of the field after round 3 at a score that no one has reached in US Open history either in relation to par (-14) or as a 3-round aggregate (199)
52 of his 54 holes have been at or below par (1 bogey, 1 double bogey)
There's no way anyone else can have a good enough round to catch him unless he also throws in a total collapse at which point he'll be due for a check-up from the neck up.
Even with another 80 like he chopped his way to at the Masters two months ago he'd probably skate by.
Greg Norman managed to blow a six shot lead on a Sunday at a Masters and eventually wound up losing by six strokes (to Faldo) so it is possible, but it would take an historic meltdown and in all likelihood Sunday will be a coronation more than a competition.
He'll be paired with (former PGA winner) Y.E. Yang from Korea again as he was today (Saturday)

If it weren't for him this would have all the makings of a great final round as spots 2 thru 14 are separated by just 4 shots, but McIlroy just playing a different game right now.

Re: U.S. Open

What he said after the Masters business

"Well that wasn't the plan!"

"Found it tough going today, but you have to lose before you can win. This day will make me stronger in the end. Oh, and congratulations Charl Schwartzel! Great player and even better guy!"

well that was pretty fecking stunning , congrats Rory.

Re: U.S. Open

Kept catching bits of this all day long, while hopping between Father's Day destinations.

We tend to water down "incredible" by overuse, but it was literally incredible to watch for me. I really found it difficult to believe what he kept on doing, and-- honestly-- was spending most of the afternoon time I put into this waiting for the chinks in the armor to manifest.

Hat's off, kid.

Re: U.S. Open

The real meat of this tourney for him was the first three days when he grabbed the lead early and just continually pulled away with virtually no mistakes except for the double-bogey on 18 on Friday and, even then, his lead was big enough to where that stumble coupled with memories of Sunday at Augusta only brought the hint of a possible weekend showdown. By cruising and even stretching his lead again on Saturday then starting off Sunday with birdies on one and four the rest simply remained more a coronation than contest. He was still technically flawless down the stretch but was playing relatively safe and drama-free golf at that point.

In the end, his 'lowest Open score ever' is somewhat diluted by the low scores for the tourney in general. The USGA likes to "protect par" in their signature event with fast and rock-hard greens, but those plans were done in this year by overnight rains each evening and by an almost total lack of wind. I believe the final scores of twenty golfers broke par this year, a number that's usually more like two or three. For those reasons this one is going to rank behind Tiger's 2000 at Pebble Beach where his mere 12-under stands out even more by the fact that 2nd place that year was at +3 but, in the race for most dominating performance, it's certainly in the class picture.
