Matt Harvey

This guy remains in the orphanage despite the manner in which he's burning it up? I don't think so.

Numbers at St. Loose.

That performance has earned him a promotion to Backmanton just in time to screw him out of his scheduled start in the Florida State League All-Star Game. Fellow Saint Darin Gorski (won't someone adopt him?) took the hill instead.

"Everyone wants to be recognized for the hard work and everything that's put in during the season," Harvey said. "Me being in my first season, it's a huge honor to represent the team and the organization in the all-star game."

Sorry, Matt.

Re: Matt Harvey

And 8 of his 20 ER (he gave up one in his start last night) were in one anomalous start..throw out that 3 2/3 inning debacle and his ERA was 1.49 in the other 13 starts with only 3 HR given up (compared to 2 in that game).

You got yourself a promising lookin' kid there, Edgy.

Matt left a message on my machine. He and Jefry Marte are going to the Futures Game.

Re: Matt Harvey

Rocketed around the ballpark in his Bingo debut:

4.2 IP, 9 H 4 ER , 2 BB, 4 SO.

bmfc1 has the real skinny.

Re: Matt Harvey

Might have been the quality of opponent, but he looked stronger in start two:

5.0 IP, 5 H 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO

Re: Matt Harvey

Start three, Matty had his strikeout pitch working, but also his homerun pitch. Yoops.

3.0 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 2 HR, 1 BB, 5 SO.

It was raining and Matt couldn't find his grip. That's what I'm going with.

Re: Matt Harvey

Matt gave up a pair in the first, but then settled down. All part of the growth process, I say.

5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 9 K, 3 BB

Re: Matt Harvey

Matt Harvey struck out "super prospect" Bryce Harper twice last night on his way to 10 K's in 7 innings with 4 hits, 2 walks, amd 1 run allowed!

Re: Matt Harvey

136 Ks in 105 professional innings... and a nearly-4-to-1 K-to-BB ratio.

I can't say I disagree.

Re: Matt Harvey

What did Harvey do against the Altoona Curve?

The Curve are a real professional team and everything. With bats and stuff. I mean, they've only gone .438 in the Eastern League this year, but that's .024 better than Backmanton.

Re: Matt Harvey

From BA's 'Daily Dish' today:

Double-A righthander Matt Harvey, the Mets' top pick in 2010, opposed [Tiger prospect Drew] Smyly in a prospect showdown in Binghamton [last night]. Harvey struck out five and walked two, but more importantly he shut out the [Erie] SeaWolves over seven innings, allowing four hits, to win his fourth straight start.
After a rough introduction to Double-A, he's been downright mean in his past five starts, logging 29 innings and allowing 22 hits, seven walks and seven runs (2.17 ERA) while striking out 31

I'm hoping we'll see him in Flushing by June 1, 2012.

Re: Matt Harvey

Mid-2012 reinforcements could come in the form of Harvey, and/or Mejia, and/or Wheeler.

On the other hand, you know what they say about good young pitchers; the best way to get one is to sign five of them.

Re: Matt Harvey

Nice Q & A with Fangraphs' David Laurilia about "stuff" here.

DL: Even without the cutter, you throw a wide array of pitches.

MH: Yes and no. I’m not going to go out there trying to throw eight different pitches. For me, throughout the game, it’s mostly three. I’ll definitely bring four or five out — but on a more consistent basis, it’s the sinker, the four-seam and the curveball.

DL: What about your changeup?

MH: I’ll throw it when it’s needed. I like to show it, obviously, and I like to throw it to lefties. Now I’m starting to throw it to righties, too. I’m getting a better feel for changing speeds and keeping hitters off balance. That’s a big thing at this level, and it will be especially big at the next level.

Re: Matt Harvey

Named a AAA All-Star Game "Top Star" for his 2 shutout innings (2 K, no hits/walks or balls out of the infield). After 38 K/9 BB, a 2.72 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 31 IP in his last five starts.

Doesn't stop Adam Rubin from going on something of a (reactive?) Twitter tirade about the rush by Met fans to get him to the major-league team.

Show of hands: How many people have seen Matt Harvey pitch? Or is it the idea of Matt Harvey that you like?

Now if you proposed Zack Wheeler, I might give you a different response.

For instance, got text from scout watching Harvey June 29: "struck out side on all straight Fb's. Up in SZ. Would be 1st and 3rd, one in ML"

Scream to call up prospect too soon. Hate him when he's decent and not star you thought (Pelfrey?). Scream for next guy. Rinse. Repeat.

Other texts I got that night, and I don't like doing this about kids who haven't reached majors ...

"Pelfrey without the split or breaking ball"

"Way, way behind Wheeler. I mean W A Y behind" ... I'm going to stop there.

Sounds like Klapish with the hostile fan-baiting stuff. Don't drink and tweet, Adam.

Re: Matt Harvey

Funny, becasue the scouts (as opposed to beat-themselves-off writers like Rubin) that I've heard have said that while Wheeler has the higher ceiling, Harvey is more ready now basically on account of better control.

Re: Matt Harvey

Well, I don't know about Adam Rubin's sexual tastes, but it doesn't take a scout to observe that a guy in the International League may be closer to the bigs than a guy in the same role riding buses in the Eastern League.

He supposedly said something about it last night too, although I missed it in the commute.

here:

"Get amused (and then block) when people retweet things from when Matt Harvey was in Triple-A. He was not the same pitcher. Everyone says it."

Re: Matt Harvey

Adam Rubin scrambling and defensive is not a sightly thing.

You speak arrogantly and decisively and condescendingly about something way unknown and it's the least surprising thing in the world that your words should come back to bite your sweet ass.

You expect to see Francesa blame the messenger when shown his own words. It's sad to see Rubin do it.
