Jose vs. Cleon vs. Oly

As you probably know, Cleon Jones batted .340 in 1969, an unassailable team record for nearly three decades. Then John Olerud came along in 1998 and batted .354, smashing Cleon's record and establishing a standard I for one never thought would be neared.

But it's half a season just about and it's being neared. Let us track how the Mets' most above-average player is doing when it comes to average.

1969: Jones -- .354

Re: Jose vs. Cleon vs. Oly

I'd love to see it.

Olerud was only getting started, by the way. He hit .378 the rest of the season. That guy could hit.

Re: Jose vs. Cleon vs. Oly

Olerud was just finishing up his only bad month -- only sub-.300 month -- of 1998 that June, when he hit .222. He really did pour it on late, batting .413 in September.

Ten-point leap for Oly, going 4-for-4 in the 86th game of the 1998 season, the same night Todd Hundley returned from the DL and mastered left field.

Re: Jose vs. Cleon vs. Oly

After doing the math, it saddens me to announce the dream is essentially over. To edge John Olerud's team record batting average of .354 (.35368), Jose Reyes would need 53 hits in 126 at-bats over the Mets' final 29 games, meaning he'd have to bat .420 the rest of the way to finish at .354 (.35409). That's assuming Terry Collins starts him every day, which he's said he won't, and that he gets about as many ABs per game as he's gotten thus far in 2011.

Then there's the little matter of batting .420 over 29 games. At their hottest down their respective standard-setting stretches, Lance Johnson batted .411 in 29 games in 1996 and John Olerud batted .406 in 27 games in 1998 (while Moises Alou, during his 30-game hitting streak of late 2007, batted .403). It would seem a bit much to ask Jose to top those searing paces from here on out. He certainly has motivation to finish strong (besides the fact that he's a professional and every player should want to finish strong), but it's a lot of ground to make up, even with the healthiest of hamstrings.

Here's hoping he catches Cleon at least -- and tops all 2011 comers from all other teams, of course.

I was resigned to this with the last DL stint. He's still got a shot at the NL title though at least.

Re: Jose vs. Cleon vs. Oly

Yeah, I'm more interested in his battle with Ryan Braun than I am with the Cleon/Olerud thing. Jose winning a batting title would be as big a chunk of Mets history, if not bigger, as his setting a new club record.

Re: Jose vs. Cleon vs. Oly

I'd go with "as big". Win a batting title and you've beaten an entire league for one season. Set a team record and you've beaten an entire franchise for fifty seasons.

I think I was more turned on by Hundley setting the NYM HR mark in 1996 than I was by Kingman and HoJo leading the league in 1982 and 1991, respectively. Though it was all good.

I'm more disappointed that the two DL stints ruined his shot at the triples record - or at least a place high up on the list one triples in a season.
