The most recent Uni Watch Blog notes the brief existence (1964-1966) of the Columbus (Georgia) Confederate Yankees, noting that their perhaps the only team more paradoxiccally named than the Atlanta Black Crackers.

I just read this piece now and was gonna post it here. Great work by Lukas, especially tracking down as many people as he could to get their takes and recollections.

I do think the blase attitude about it all was a combo of people distancing themselves from it a little in retrospect coupled with a little bit of genuine progress in 45 years. Great article.

Amazingly nobody who wore the patch ever noticed it, let alone got upset about it. I long for the days when people only got bent out of shape about shit that was actually important.

The symbol of a traitorous insurgency responsible for the deaths of 650,000 Americans and committed to keeping an entire race enslaved? Yeah, I think that's kind of important.

The Civil War was important.

The patch on this dumb MFY galoot's jersey is maybe the farthest thing from important. That patch never hurt anybody, it's a piece of cloth. It's not a scratch and sniff sticker that smells like lynchings.

Slap a swastiks on a jersey and see if you feel the same way.

That patch is --or should be-- offensive to any American.

Thank goodness I get to choose what's offensive to me, and you don't. If I let others decide what I should find offense I'd hardly get anything done.
