Anybody want to tell me where to slot these guys into the list or who needs to be bumped up or down on the list?

David Bowie
Mel Collins ("Miss You," The Alan Parsons Project, "When I Get It Right," Dire Straits, King Crimson, Tears for Fears)
Hank "Hurricane" Carter (George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers)
Dick Parry (Pink Floyd, The Who, Violent Femmes)
Dana Colley (Morphine)
Tom Scott "Listen to What the Man Says"
Harvey Henderson (Bar-Kays, Otis Redding)
Maceo Parker (Rock 'n' roll credits?)

Maceo was the primary horn man for James Brown for a decade plus, before spinning off to do actual GOOD fusion. Superduperbad-- as far as I'm concerned, if he qualifies for the list, he's top-5.

Maceo Parker's rock credits include James Brown and Prince.

There is a ton of sax on the Phil Spector records of the 60s but I couldn't tell you the names of the players off the top of my head, and I think it wasn't always the same person.

Alto Reed of the Silver Bullet Band also comes to mind.

I don't know how we've missed the late, great LeRoi Moore from the DMB.

Funny, I just know Parker as a jazz guy.

Great call. Also number one on the list of most well-oiled men in rock 'n' roll history.

Michael Brecker (Steely Dan, Knopfler's "Going Home" and a million other jock (jazz-rock) songs.
Wayne Shorter (the solo in "Aja")
Lane Meyer ("I've Been Arrested By You, Take Me In")

The English Beat had 2 sax players: Saxa, and the other one, Wesley McGoogan, who cut off his fingers with a saw accidently and as a result doesn't get the same sound he used to.

I don't know much about Romeo Void, other than that she might like me better if we slept together and that they had a sax player.

Re: The Big Man (split from Guess Who)

The guy from Supertramp, played sax and clarinet (John Helliwell).

This guy, Phil Kenzie, played that short but chillingly awesome solo in "Year of the Cat"

Re: The Big Man (split from Guess Who)

Grady Gaines, sax player on all of the Little Richard records including the amazing solo on "Keep a Knockin'."

I second Mel Collins and Maceo Parker (how did I not think of him?)

Re: The Big Man (split from Guess Who)

I'm partial to Dave Koz, who is primarily known for smooth jazz but who came up as Richard Marx's saxophonist.

Before y'all snicker too much, here is Koz playing with the late, great Wayman Tisdale (who followed his NBA career with one as a jazz bassist) -

Other big men:

Walter Parazaider, Chicago:

Andrew Woolfolk, Earth, Wind, & Fire:

Jerry Martini, Sly & the Family Stone ("All the squares, get out!"), Prince

Angelo Moore, Fishbone:

Lester Sterling, Skatalites, original and later lineups, alto

Azemobo "Zem" Audu, Skatalites, later lineups, tenor

(Kinda looks like Jose Reyes.)

Didn't The Specials have a saxman, or was that another horn?

Re: The Big Man (split from Guess Who)

Most ska acts will use a honker at least part time, but I don't know of any featured regular with them.

Re: The Big Man (split from Guess Who)

More nominees wailing in my head:

Andy Mackay (Roxy Music, plus Duran Duran, Paul McCartney, Mellancamp, and others. Not sure if he did the excellent solo in "Ain't Even Done with the Night," but maybe.)

Danny LeMelle (Rick James' PunkFunk Horns, including brief, but signature work on "Super Freak")

A hard guy to find credits for, but then I found a page that noted he's been billed as Daniel LeMelle, Danny LeMelle, D. Le'Melle, D. LeMelle, Dan Le Melle, Daniel LaMelle, Daniel Le Melle, Daniel Le'Melle, Danny Lamelle, Dany LeMelle. Dude needs a better agent and a better editor.

Bonus: check out the guitar solo at about 1:00. You see why the Bonzos are the greatest rock group ever.

Re: Rock 'n' Roll Saxons (split from The Big Man)

In the 1980's Quaterflash hit it big with the song "Harden My Heart". Rindy Ross* handles both the lead vocals and saxophone. She goes straight into the vocals following the intro, which is rather impressive. At least she gets a break after the solo in the middle of the song.

*I know she makes the very end of Edgy's list from earlier in the thread, but she looks better than all those guys so I thought she should get a post of her own.
