The Knicks Suck 2011-2012

Time to start this year's thread.

Summing up the draft: Walsh went out with a big "fuck you" to Dolan and Knicks faithful.

It's not that Iman Shumpert may not work out necessarily, but to REACH for a role-player, rather than take BEST AVAILABLE PLAYER is always a mistake, in my view. Needs are ephemeral; talent will last.

It's not that i'm against defense; i just don't think you can draft it. You have to have a coach that schemes for it, demands it, and holds players accountable for it. D is about desire, not necessarily a particular skill set. So drafting a defensive wing (after giving away the nearly identical Ronnie Brewer last year, FOR NOTHING) is not going to have any impact on this team, as long as D'antoni is the coach. If Shumpert can learn some discipline and demonstrate better shot selection (so he's not an offensive liability at the 2) and ball movement/handling (at least sufficient to be an effective backup PG), then fine. I'm dubious, since a "combo guard" who can't shoot good enough for a 2 or pass well enough for a 1 isn't really a combo guard... he's a D-leaguer. But whatever. It's not like your going to get an all-star at the 17th pick. But if you've got Singleton sitting there, all 6-9 defender/rebounderishness of him, or better yet, Fereid the Rodman-like rebounder, then reaching for a smaller guy rated to go in the 2nd round is just profoundly irritating.

Walsh made a better move in the 2nd round, buying the 45th pick to get Josh "Jorts" Harrellson, a 6-10/275lb Center from Kentucky. He's unathletic, with suspect D against quicker big men, but he's a legit rebounder/shot-blocker, with a little bit of a faceup J... upside is Bill Lambeer without the assholitude. Downside: insurance salesman. They also still have Jerome Jordan in Europe somewhere. So they're not totally bereft of big men now. Just short of GOOD ones, i guess.

Assuming we have a season:

starters: Billups / Fields or Shumpert / Anthony / Stoudemire / Turiaf
rotation: Douglas / Shumpert or Fields / Walker / Balkman / Harrellson
Bench: Routins, JJordan
IR: _____, _____, ______

FAs:
- Anthony Carter
- Roger Mason
- Derrick Brown
- Jarred Jeffries
- Shawne Williams
- Sheldon Williams

I'd like to see them bring back Shawne "extra e" Williams: he showed alot of skills last year. Also, DBrown has upside. and Sheldon isn't a bad backup big. Carter, Mason and Jeffries can all take a hike. Jeffries can take an especially long hike off an especially short pier... carrying an anvil. With Mason tied to his leg.

Drafting Shumpert over more developed players, or scorers like Jordan Hamilton, is highly questionable, but understandable in certain contexts.

Drafting him for "defensive talent" over Chris Singleton is indefensible.

I was at a poker game last night, someone told me they took Shumpert and I just shook my head imagining who they must have passed on. Singleton would have been nice. respect for Walsh is slipping on my end.

Mike Lupica's opening on his ESPNNew York radio show today:
"Considering the way the Knicks have drafted the last few years, when I heard they had drafted Iman, I thought they had drafted Don Imus".

Re: The Knicks Suck 2011-2012

Knicks have made a qualifying offer to Derrick Brown, a restricted FA. So he's likely to stay.
According to Frank Isola, they're also looking at some vet big men for 1-year deals, particularly Kurt Thomas.
I love Thomas; he's a thug and would provide Oakley-esque role model for JJordan, Harrellson, not to mention Stoudemire. Turiaf can only do so much of that from the DL.

With the Shumpert draft, I also wouldn't be surprised if they traded Touchdown Tony Douglas for a real backup PG. I like TD, and he was playing hurt last year so he's better than he showed, but they need a more consistent, reliable distributor to run the point, with Billups an aging injury risk. They apparently think Shumpert can play some minutes at PG (I'm dubious, but ok), but we need someone more reliable than that behind Chauncey. They might as well re-sign AC, who can still run the point, if nothing better is available.

starters: Billups / Fields / Melo / Stoudemire / Turiaf
rotation: Douglas / Shumpert / Walker / Balkman / Harrellson
Bench: DBrown, JJordan
IR: Routins, _____, ______
FAs: Anthony Carter / Roger Mason / Jarred Jeffries / Shawne Williams / Sheldon Williams

The Knicks drafted an Imam? Does that mean they have a prayer this year?

That's for his Turkish or French League team to worry about.
