France 1, Nigeria 0. Final.

Germany (hostesses) 2, Canada 1. Also a final.

Re: Women's World Cup.

The World Cup has opening ceremonies?

This may be the most competitive WWC ever. The USA could win it all, but it's plausible that they might not get out of their group. Germany is the team to beat for sure, though.

Japan close to finishing of New Zealand 2-1 right now.

In case you've forgotten, she is remembered for one of the most memorable moments in womens' soccer.

Sweden defeats Colombia 1-0.

USA playing their opening match right NOW!!! versus North Korea. ESPN have noted once or twice that North Korea has a very young team.

Norway hasn't played yet but Marita Skammelsrud Lund is an early contender for most beautiful eyes:

USA has a strong second half and defeats North Korea 2-0. The North Koreans were giving them a lot of trouble in the first half though.

Re: Women's World Cup.

"When we stayed in Pyongyang during training our players were hit by lightning, and more than five of them were hospitalised," said [North Korean] coach Kim.

"Some stayed in hospital and then came to Germany later than the rest of us. The goalkeeper and the four defenders were most affected, and some midfielders as well. The physicians said the players were not capable of participating in the tournament.

"But World Cup football is the most important and significant event for a footballer, so they don't want to think about anything but football.

"The fact that they played could be called abnormal, the result of very strong will."

And food. We also think about food because it's hard to get any where we live.

It's too bad. Youngest team in the Cup (filled with teenagers), and they give a top seed a good fight. They've got a lot to be proud of and their coach goes right into propaganda mode.

Re: Women's World Cup.

France defeats Canada quatre a zéro and Candada can bid adieu to this tournament. Quite an upset as Canada are ranked #6 in the world and many observers though that they would advance as far as the semifinals. They were drawn into a tough group with France & Germany though. Their consolation is that Canada will host the WWC in 2015.

The all-Allies Quarterfinal is playing right now between France & England. The all-Axis Quarterfinal between Germany & Japan is later today.

Re: Women's World Cup.

I doubt I'll convince anyone who hates soccer and/or women's sports but HOLY SHIT there were some great games today. A bruised & battered English team with walking wounded on the field persisted and managed to hold a much better French side to penalty kicks (which France won). Then Japan upset Germany. It should be noted that Germany won the two previous WWCs, are ranked #2 in the world, and are the host nation. This is one of the great upsets in sport's history.

Re: Women's World Cup.

Gotta say that I hate the goalie-must-stay-on-the-line rule. It's almost never adhered to and it's too restrictive. It creates a situation --- if enforced --- where the rule has more influence on the play than the player. It's virtually impossible to competitively defend your goalmouth by not moving until the ball is struck.

The law was made for man (and, by extension for woman soccer players). Man (and, by extension for woman soccer players) was not made for the law.

Goalie can't move off the line but can move side to side on the line IIRC. I like the rule because before goalies were coming out to their box etc.

Yes, but EVERYONE cheats a bit, from high-level prep-school matches to second-tier Mexican leagues to EPL to internationals. NOBODY calls it. Reminds me a bit of, say, foot faults that way, only more subjective. Or-- this may be a better analogy-- the first baseman breaking from the bag a half-second early.

That said... holy hell, that was fun.

That's what I'm getting at. And it was certainly not anything like a particularly egregious violation, if it was one at all. To suddenly wake up to that rule in a World Cup elimination game? Amazin'.

Exactly, like if she'd jumped out four feet, or even leaned out and yelped something like, "SAMBA SUCKS! CAPOEIRA IS JUST PLAYFIGHTING! YOU ARE ALL VERY OBVIOUSLY TRANSSEXUALS! U-S-A!"

(Which, frankly, might just have been worth the penalty.)

Re: Women's World Cup.

says, espn, the women choked.

says me, fuck that shit.

the world doesn't boil down to chokers and champions, no matter how often sports people try to tell me so. not every game is a morality play whereby the strongest of character is the victor, and losses only arise through a moral flaw or deficit. in what athletic contest do virtues decide the winner and vice the loser? none i've ever competed in.

that we as a sports-consuming populace have not yet descended en masse upon labeling the wwc team chokers and failures and losers is not a bad thing. maybe it shows that somewhere in our collective subconsciousness, when we are able to view athletes as real human beings with feelings and emotions and hearts and minds, and not simply as mindless mechanical automatons acting out a set of pre-programmed movements in a vacuum of human influences, we are more able to rationally approach their performances and more fairly judge their performances.

but no. the takeaway is that, hey, we label college and high school boys as chokers and failures and whatnot, why can't we do the same for women?

shouldn't the opposite be the case.

Amen, mm.

The game was essentially a tie between two great teams playing at the top of their game. I think most people appreciate that they saw a great display of athleticism and fair play.

Indeed. Seems to be from the school of thought down the block from the school of thought that brings you caddish/blithely unfaithful women as a supposed sign of feminist achievement.

The chokers are currently dining in BetterHalfer's hotel restaurant, btw. (In town for the talk show circuit, presumably?)
