This is it! Turn up your portable radio because it's time for a back alley duel to determine the smoothest song of all time.

The songs listed above all earned 3 votes in the heavily-contested Desert Island Mix Tape poll.

There can only be one!

I'm not really into any of these songs, but of the three I went with Summer Breeze.

Re: Yacht Rock Deathmatch

1. I'm Not In Love (great lyrics, great production, great song)
2. Summer Breeze (harmless)
3. How Long (saw these guys when this was a hit opening for someone else. They played what seemed like a 15-minute version of this song. I've disliked it ever since).

Oh dear, tied at three again.

A rout just wouldn't be smooth.

Hilarity!

My dad saw Hall & Oates last night in Milwaukee.

Why do they shoot all their footage in a cul-de-sac of storage sheds?

Maybe they blew all of their budget on getting Hollywood Steve to do the intros.

"Its low-tech, bad-on-purpose aesthetic -- including crummy sound and laughable wigs -- is Web folk art, best enjoyed during stolen moments at the office, or enjoying a beer after cleaning out the e-mail "in" box."

Ace by a couple of whiskers over Seals & Croft. If you were bringin' "Diamond Girl" on the yacht, might be a different story.

I'm judging this by their Yachtrockiness and not how "good" the song is, necessarily, so I'm going with Summer Breeze.

"How Long" for when the yacht is breezing along. "Summer Breeze" for when the breeze crashes the damn thing into the desert island. I can see that. But it's then that I'll wonder how long it will take to be rescued.

Re: Yacht Rock Deathmatch

10cc for a better world no matter what you're sailing. An ironic alternative context only gets you so far. And then what have you got? A mixtape without "I'm Not in Love." That's what.

Remember, no matter how groovy your yacht is, you're still going to be marooned.

This whole poll is about an ironic alternative context though. Theoretically, you have another chance to get INIL on the tape when we consider the 10cc library. Not sure that Seals & Croft even qualify.

Re: Yacht Rock Deathmatch

10cc is by far the most talented of the group. "I'm Not In Love" is their second-worst song* (a parody of stupid love songs that people took straight), but it's far better than the other two.

*Worst: Neanderthal Man (yes, Hotlegs was early 10cc).

Yeah, I know, but I'm not taking any chances letting any non gun-to-the-head context seperate me from my 10cc.

Re: Yacht Rock Deathmatch

Not that I mind visiting the whole Yacht Rock phenomenon (I love it), but the beauty of the single-artist DIMT is that it forces one to confront the songs and not the artist, or the context. It's not intended to be a question of which guys are more talented.

Absotruthly.

I've just come to accept the lie in stating that I'm not in love with "I'm Not in Love." I totally am. And (DJs take note) it segues fantastically into "She's Gone."
