Because he's recovering from the calf injury that bothered him so much that he's played almost every inning since coming off the DL including Saturday when he went 5 for 5.

WHY IS INJURED REYES SHOWING UP TO ALL-STAR GAME?

In a totally selfish move the clearly injured Reyes is here in AZ, what are his motives? , what I'm trying to say is that Jeter would never have pulled such a move..........

Close -- Wally.

SELFISH REYES HAS ONE FOOT OUT THE DOOR
Phoenix (AP) -- It's like they don't get it, these Mets. Jose Reyes, on the disabled list yet again with an injured hamstring, is spending his All-Star break here in Arizona, gobbling up ground balls and whacking batting-practice line drives all over Chase Field.

"We'd certainly like Jose to take some time off and recover," general manager Sandy Alderson said. "But this is a special honor for him and for our organization, so we're not going to begrudge him the opportunity to get out there and be a part of history."

Reyes, of course, carried the Mets in the first half -- offensively, defensively, spiritually -- and if they intend to mount any sort of misguided run at the class of the National League, then they're going to need him back at the top of the lineup, doing what he does best. But rather than resting the hammy, he's running with abandon around Chase Field, laughing and joking and making friends.

Seven of the Mets' first ten games after the break are against division foes, the Phillies and Marlins, and the three in the middle are against the Cardinals, who are leading the NL Central. If he's as healthy as he appears to be, then wouldn't you think that the most important thing would be to have him ready to go for those games? But the Mets, rather than asking Jose to stay home, will let him have all the time he needs.

"He should be back in time for the Cincinnati-Washington trip," Alderson added. "We don't want to put any undue pressure on him."

You'd never catch his crosstown counterpart, Derek Jeter, pulling that move; Jeter, in fact, is spending the break relaxing at home, continuing to recover from his recent DL stint and basking in the heavenly glow that he earned with his 3000th hit on Saturday. He knows that being there for his team for the pennant race, grounding out weakly to second base in big spots four times a night, is the most important thing. That's why he's got five World Series rings.

And that's what Jose wants too. "I know there's a possibility I might not be in New York much longer," Reyes said during yesterday's All-Star Media Day. "I want to be able to show myself off to any potential future teammates, show them that I can still hit and run, that the hamstring isn't an issue."

This cannot be repeated enough: the best SS in NY, who is on the DL, showed up for the ASG, took batting practice, and was introduced before the game.

The other SS in NY, who is beloved by the media, who is not on the DL, did not show up for the ASG, did not take batting practice, and was not introduced before the game.

If I'm not mistaken Adrian Gonzalez was the most outspoken player of that "movement", so I'm kind of surprised he didn't pull a Jeter this week. Well, maybe not so much, but when you are that outspoken, one would have thought some follow through on your threat in some fashion would be in order.

FWIW, would this be happening if A) the ASG was not in Phoenix and/or B) one of the victims was tragically related to a professional scout?

Does it matter? No, not really, but that was back in January, not like it was in May or June. I guess the only way I can see it being worthwhile is if Congresswoman Giffords throws out the, or one of the first pitches.

It's aimed at everyone, that spent all day killing the All-Star game and emphasizing that even the players don't want to be there. Almost all of them did.

I don't even blame Sabathia. He wasn't selected, said he'd go on vacation, and then was named last minute anyway even though he was pitching.
