All Star Stars

I kind of like it in theory, if not in execution. I think it's kind of cool when a player gets to wear a littlle something, like a soldier's medals decorating him for his accomplishments on an otherwise-uniform uniform. The two stars above the nameplates are pretty cool and subtle, but the stars on the hats are overkill. I could kind of see a future where a player gets a tiny embroidered star on his sleeve year-round for each All-Star seclection he's had, but then national telecasters would have long, lingering closeups of the shoulder of Derek Jeter (or some future analog of his) while broadcasters pant over his 12 stars when he really only deserved three or four, so I need to think on it some.

Anyhow, the Yankee All Stars aren't wearing the stars, but they are, naturally, marketing star-spangled nu Jeter Jerseys. I guess I sort of like it as a potential new tradition (dignity), but hate it as a merchandising angle (no dignity).

Re: All Star Stars

I do like the idea of the little stars on the uniforms, but not on the caps. When they put stuff on the caps it always looks awful. I'm thinking of the Citi Field patch from 2009 and the World Series logos. (Do they still do that?)

Yup.

Yeah, there's no room for noise up there.

Re: All Star Stars

I like it in theory, but what's next? MVP patches? I think it could create a caste system of sorts on the field, which wouldn't be the best thing for a team sport. (and now i'm surprised the NBA doesn't do this)

Re: All Star Stars

If it's tiny little half-inch stars, good. If it's big garish patches, bad.

Re: All Star Stars

I had noticed the stars on Beltran's cap in one of the L.A. games this week, but not the jersey. They're a bit garish on the hat methinks.

Re: All Star Stars

I'm guessing they're doing this just so they can sell special edition all star regular jerseys. They try selling the all star jerseys every year but I don't think a lot of people buy them (I've rarely seen an all star jersey in the stands). This is probably the all star jersey that they think will sell...

It's all in the merchandising.

Re: All Star Stars

I like the stars- it's a nice touch. The hats, no.

And I'm assuming this is just until the All-Star break. I would hope it wasn't for the rest of the year, because that'd be tacky.

"Spaceballs" was on TV last night. What a great film.

I love the stars, and I love the idea of having them be cumulative on the uniform sleeve. That'd be really neat.

I've got a Yellow '06 Reyes shirt. Don't think I'd buy an All-Star Jersey though.

The 'Shaw last night went with the jersey stars but not the hatty ones.

Re: All Star Stars

I like it - and it's OK with me if they stay on for the rest of the year.
MVP, CY, RoY acknowledgments would be cool too if they kept them equally small and tasteful.
It would be kind of MLB's version of the TdF's yellow jersey (also green, white, and polka-dot).

Yanx aren't/won't wear them I'm sure because, as usual, they feel as if they're above major league baseball rather than a part of it. Doesn't much matter anyway as Rivera is suddenly too injured to participate in next week's ASG just as he's been for what seems like the 24th time in a row for ASGs, WBCs, etc., even though he's not too injured to play in actual games. Jeter and/or ARod pulling out is only a matter of time.

There's an idea. For every all-star appearance the ballplayers get a star tramp stamp.

You wouldn't notice too often, because they'd be small to the naked eye, but every once in a while, your vision would lock on a Beltran left sleeve that looked some'n' like this.

I kinda like that idea. I'd prefer it if they came up with an icon for the Rookie of the Year, instead of the initials. (Have there been any rookies of the year named Roy, I wonder?)

Re: All Star Stars

The Rookie of the Year Award is also called the Jackie Robinson Award so you could stitch in Jackie's handsome profile or something, but I think we're at the Jackie Robinson saturation point and then some.

I like it edgy.

I do concur with grimm that we need a pic for roy. same with cy young, rolaids relief, a 3 crown for triple crown winners, and MVP...though MVP I feel like should be letters....

or how about the pic that's on the award:

(the 2 bats would probably work best, though I'd like to see the ump/catcher/homestealer just cause it would be funny)

For MVP I'd make an icon using the letters.

For Rookie of the Year... how about Jon Matlack's forehead?

Yeah, I was going to make an icon out of ROY, but I had used enough time.

I'm going to draw the line on the Rolaids Relief Award.

Not unless it's an icon of his face and there is an HBO special to unveil the logo.

I don't know if they still do, but a couple of years back the warmup gear of each player included the patches of past ASGs the player was selected to.

Oh yeah, and if you are named to the game but don't show up and aren't on the DL you don't get to decorate your uni with stars.

Re: All Star Stars

Y'know, the more I think about some of the above statements the more it reminds me of high school

"It's believed Derek Jeter did not want to show up his non-All Star teammates by wearing the stars" -- then don't go to the fucking game. Oh wait, you're not, well then you don't get the stars anyway. Nice to hear that you would have given up that 2009 MVP had you won it too; no reason to show up the non-Valuable teammates.

"and when the captain went that way the others followed. -- otherwise he wasn't going to let them sit at the cool kids table during lunchtime

"I really didn't have a say in it," Martin said. -- Cuz I really wanted to sit at the cool kids table

"I don't mind not wearing it, we are a team. I don't think there is a reason to separate the guys going to the All-Star team and the guys who aren't. We are one team, keep it that way." -- then don't go to the game if this is so fracturing.

Martin wasn't sure if it was Jeter's idea, but said he would not be surprised if that was where it originated. "I am not sure, but that sounds like him," Martin said. "He is the captain." -- So he had no say in it and doesn't know whose idea it was but he's all for it. Or at least he "doesn't mind" not being against it. Or something like that.

Joyce said the Players Association instructed players not to wear them." -- Apparently the instructions to the other 28 squads got lost in the mail. Either that or you're a fucking liar.

" Price took his cue from the Yankees. "Did you see the Yankees wearing them?" Price asked. "That's why we are not wearing them." -- "And if Sally's not going to cut her bangs there's no way I'm cutting mine".
Didn't Dr. Suess have a book about stuff like this involving Sneetches?

"Commissioner Bud Selig might be disappointed Jeter and other players are not wearing the stars, but that didn't stop him from calling Jeter to congratulate the newest member of the 3,000-hit club." -- I would have called to ask how come you can go 5-for-5 but are too injured to play in the ASG that you were so undeservedly voted into. And then I'd add how disappointed I was to leave you off of next year's ballot.

Re: All Star Stars

More players dropped out of the ASG game today, some with injuries, some with "injuries" and some because they started today. Since Selig insists that the game "count", then move it to Wednesday so the starting pitchers from Sunday can pitch.

If this breaks good, it was Jeter. If it breaks bad, who knows?
