Rey Ordonez: The Song

I had a great session DJing at turntable with some powerpop fans last night, when it somehow came to be about baseball, and someone played a Kate Jacobs song called "Rey Ordonez." I fell out of my chair in awe of its Metliness, I think there's even a sample of Howie Rose at the tail end.

It's actually a new song despite the seeming "old" references, about a traveling band tuning in Mets games from the road. It's perfect! You can stream it on Kate's website

The lyrics are:

Rey Ordonez

Jose Visciano
Carlos Baerga
Rey Ordonez
Bobby Bonilla
Edgardo Alfonso
they were our friends

on the radio
in the dark van
and the tired band
looks out the window
at the white line
and the black sky
and it’s midnight

and it’s outta here
he’s running home
we’re fifty-seven miles from San Antonio
out in Queens
back home at Shea
they’re playing under lights that
make the night look like the day

leaning on the window
i see a million stars
I’m making up my next life
feel the city’s dim glow
I wonder where you are
we’re staying with Scotty’s ex-wife

and it’s outta here
he’s running home
we’re 16 miles outside of San Antonio
out in Queens
back home at Shea
they’re playing under lights that
make the night look like the day

Jose Visciano
Carlos Baerga
Rey Ordonez
Bobby Bonilla
Edgardo Alfonso
they were our friends

on the radio
in the dark van
and it’s midnight
he’s running home

and it’s midnight
in the dark van
and the tired band
looks out the window

and it’s outta here
and it’s midnight
and it’s midnight
he’s running home

As I said on turntable.fm, "It's a power pop song about a player with no power or pop."

It's funny how this team may have been more Latino before Omar took over, but the snorting contempt followed his ascendency.

It's also funny that the Mets were printing Spanish versions of the yearbook going back to 1988 and were doing the ethnic weeks as far back as the late 1990s. Yet the narrative is that it started once Omar was hired.

Agreed with that. They were radio broadcasting in Spanish in their first season in 1962!

'it's outta here, he's running home' is her -ex? cause, man, it's probably not literal abt Ordonez, right? I mean he did hit 1 that year.

Awesome song. Need to be 'her fan' and never sign into TT.fm again anyway. Like that place, just always seem to miss u guys.

Stunningly beautiful. Great find. And the second song to celebrate an underloved era.
