Rey Ordonez: The Song

I had a great session DJing at turntable with some powerpop fans last night, when it somehow came to be about baseball, and someone played a Kate Jacobs song called "Rey Ordonez." I fell out of my chair in awe of its Metliness, I think there's even a sample of Howie Rose at the tail end.
You've obviously got to buy all her albums NOW!!!!

As I said on turntable.fm, "It's a power pop song about a player with no power or pop."

It's funny how this team may have been more Latino before Omar took over, but the snorting contempt followed his ascendency.

It's also funny that the Mets were printing Spanish versions of the yearbook going back to 1988 and were doing the ethnic weeks as far back as the late 1990s. Yet the narrative is that it started once Omar was hired.

Agreed with that. They were radio broadcasting in Spanish in their first season in 1962!

'it's outta here, he's running home' is her -ex? cause, man, it's probably not literal abt Ordonez, right? I mean he did hit 1 that year.

Stunningly beautiful. Great find. And the second song to celebrate an underloved era.
