British Open

Or simply 'The Open' as they call it (like it ever occurred to them there might be another).

And where else can you see golfers in wool caps and mittens, spectators in parkas, the visible breath of competitors, sideways rain and 40 mph wind but England in July?

Northern Irishman Darren Clarke leading thru 7 holes with Mickelson making a run at him.

If you change the word "golfers" for "baseball players" you used to be able to see that at Candlestick Park.

Re: British Open

And this year they weren't even up in Scotland. They were in Kent this year almost as far south in England as you can get before falling into the English Channel.

In the end there was little drama in this one.
Mickelson, after gaining six strokes to par on the front nine, gave four of them back later on. And Dustin Johnson was within two with his ball in the middle of the fairway when he sliced one so far out of bounds I think the spectator who tracked the ball down spoke French. He never recovered either.

So the crowd got to celebrate the (sort-of) hometown boy winning as well as the 3rd different Northern Irishman to win in the last six majors. Plus the media got to gush over his back-story which included his first major at age 42 some six years after losing his wife to cancer.

Re: British Open

Funny to glance up in a bar Friday night to spot the leader board and see the Northern Irish flag appear so many times.

Re: British Open

I'm happy for Clarke. Can't help but feel for the guy with the dead wife thing and all. Plus he seems like a nice guy overall.

I can't believe it's been six years since that story. I feel like it was just yesterday. It was nice to see Phil show a little life as well. When he's on he's just amazing with his short game.

I feel so old when I see guys like Rory McIlroy and that Fowler kid. Nice to see Anthony Kim resurface as well.

Really only Clarke was in contention of the N. Ire group this week. It's just that they've had three separate winners in the last 1+ years.

Also, for all the talk about the death of American golf (aka: the post-Tiger world) Yanks wound up in 5 of the top 7 spots.

Whenever he's not missing 2-foot putts anyway. He missed several shorties leading up to Sunday or else his front-side charge would have been really meaningful. And then another missed gimme started his downfall on the back nine. At once both an exciting and frustrating guy to watch.

Watson, who won 'The Open' five times way back when and had an almost win two years ago at age 59, remains an immensely popular golfer over there so I'm sure the crowd got a real kick out of the old man throwing in an ace and having a respectable showing for the whole tourney (and not just as a fading icon) at age 61.
