As a parent, the shooting at the camp breaks my heart. All I can think about is how MK loves going to Boy Scout camp, and how those kids were just like him....

Hate and intolerance are everywhere. The scary thing is when you meet somebody who more or less agrees with you about stuff, but is completely off his or her rocker.

So it wasn't Al Qaeda? Because the "news" outlets were trumpeting with great certitude that it was Al Qaeda yesterday. I wonder what made them jump to making such an uninformed pronouncement.

Yep, that's all I heard on Friday when I was surfing the web for updates. I wasn't following the news at all from Friday evening until I saw your post on Saturday which is where I learned it was actually Norwegian extremist. This article mentions some more of the knee jerk responses on Friday.

In the early days after 9/11 the death toll estimate was close to double what it eventually wound up being. But after some companies simply submitted lists of employees without noting which ones were on vacation, out of town, or simply late to work, and other lists figured out that John Smith, Jack Smith, John H. Smith, and J. Smith Jr. were one person and not four, the initial 5,000+ number (or 15,000 as per the NYPost) slowly worked its way down to below 3K. As far as I know no one actually came back to life.
