More from Toby Hyde:

I have not seen Gary Brown, the Giants first round pick out of Cal State Fullerton in 2010, but if the Mets are doing a deal with San Francisco, the 22-year old is easily target #1. He’s hit .317/.386/.466 with 24 doubles, six triples and eight homers with 39 stolen bases in 95 games for San Jose in the California League. Yes, it’s a hitters’ league, but San Jose has the most pitcher-friendly ballpark on the circuit. Bottom line: a premium defender in center with speed, average and a little pop. Yes, please.

Brown and Nimmo--2/3ds of the Mets OF of the future.

I'd be stunned if Bungarner is any part of this.

But, only a timely basis, John Sickels was nice enough to have recently complete his mid-season review for his list of Giants prospects.
The rank and grade for each are John's pre-season opinions and then he gives an update based on the half-season since he made them.

2) Gary Brown, OF, Grade B:
Hitting .313/.382/.469 with 39 steals for High-A San Jose, drawing raves for speed and defense. Has a few rough edges but overall I'm impressed, and pre-season concerns I had about his bat have been eased.

3) Zack Wheeler, RHP, Grade B:
3.70 ERA with 95/46 K/BB in 83 innings for San Jose, 64 hits, 1.29 GO/AO. K/IP and H/IP remain excellent, reflect plus stuff, still needs to sharpen command.

Wheeler just turned 21 in May; Brown will be 23 in September

Late start due to knee injury, hit .324/.387/.441 in 16 games for (A+) San Jose, .276/.291/.439 win 25 games for Double-A Richmond. Speed/power potential remains impressive, still raw with the strike zone.

12) Eric Surkamp, LHP, Grade C+:
2.05 ERA, 118/32 K/BB in 101 innings for (AA) Richmond, 84 hits. Excellent season in all respects, transition to Double-A very successful.

From Toby Hyde: I’m very skeptical on Zack Wheeler. The 21-year old has fanned 10 batters/9 in the Cal League but walked 4.8 batters per nine. I saw him for five innings in 2010, and the velocity was plus. His breaking ball was crude and he was very wild. The numbers say, he’s still wild. He has a long way to go.

Re: Beltran to Giants

NYPOST. Last sentence cracks me up.

The Mets traded Carlos Beltran and cash to the Giants for one of the best pitching prospects in the majors, Zach Wheeler, multiple sources confirmed to The Post.

Because there is a no-trade clause involved with Beltran, there is a 24-hour grace period that most be observed. So it is conceivable that an issue could crop up that would kill the deal. But officials involved in the process felt that only minor details needed to be finalized and that all the heavy lifting was done.

The Mets picture Wheeler, who is pitching at High-A San Jose for the Giants, as a top-of-the-rotation pitcher. This deal shows that GM Sandy Alderson favored quality over quantity when it came to dealing Beltran. Outfield prospect Gary Brown and lefty Jonathan Sanchez were other names involved in the talks, but the teams eventually settled on Wheeler.

Wheeler was the No. 6 pick in the 2009 draft and ranked the 35th best prospect by Baseball America. In 13 starts this year, Wheeler was 7-5 with a 3.99 ERA.

Beltran invited Mets teammates and staffers to a going-away party in Cincinnati on Tuesday night after the team’s 8-6 win over the Reds.

multiple sources? How many legitimate sources could there really be? Do you ask Alderson and then DePodesta? I gues by now it's probably sent to Boras and out and stuff, but these reporters make it sound like Alderson has a phone list and he calls every paper in America when the terms change.

Re: Beltran to Giants

BA's take on Wheeler - who they ranked 35th in their mid-season Top-50 list

The sixth overall pick in 2009, Wheeler logged just 59 innings last season as he dealt with a cracked fingernail on his pitching hand—though he used the down time to iron out his pitching mechanics. A full recovery is evident in Wheeler's performance this season. He ranks among the California League leaders in strikeout rate (10.0 per nine innings, fifth) and opponent average (.224, fourth). But while he's given up just seven homers in 16 starts, he's been too liberal with walks, handing out 4.8 per nine innings. Wheeler sits in the low- to mid-90s and can dial his plus fastball up to 96 mph with a quick, easy arm action. His curveball doesn't always feature power or shape at this stage, and his changeup sometimes lacks finish, but he's flashed plus with both pitches at various points. If Wheeler sharpens at least one of them to above-average status, he's got front-of-the-rotation potential.

In the end this was a good deal.
Even if draft picks were a possibility by holding onto him until the end of the year, those picks couldn't have been any higher than #16 and could both have been 35th and higher making it unlikely that you'd ever get a prospect as good as Wheeler, a guy who was not only a #6 overall pick but also has 150 or so successful professional innings under his belt.

Re: Beltran to Giants

Analysis from ESPN's Keith Law:

Keith Law wrote:
In acquiring pitching prospect Zack Wheeler from the San Francisco Giants for Carlos Beltran, the New York Mets made out like bandits. The Giants get a piece to help them substantially this year, but with the risk of an enormous long-term cost.

Wheeler, who ranked No. 31 on my most recent prospect rankings, is an elite pitching prospect with a high ceiling. The right-hander will most likely be a solid No. 2 starter, but there is some chance he will be better than that because of the big fastball. He'll touch 97 mph and sits 91-94 or better with an above-average curveball that has shown it can miss bats. He has a fringy changeup that's a little too firm, and left-handed hitters are not impressed yet, as they've hit .292/.404/.487 against him this year. The fastball-breaking ball combo is top-notch, but between the changeup and a few other issues, Wheeler is high-risk as well as high-reward. His control is below average, with three starts this year in which he walked five or more batters, and he'll have to show durability to match his frame, as he's retired more than 18 batters just twice this year. You have to add an arm like that to your system any time you get the opportunity, but even as a fan of Wheeler's I admit he's no sure thing.

Beltran's value to the Giants depends largely on who he replaces. Of course, what the Giants should do is send Aubrey Huff out to pasture, but with their $12 million commitment to him next year (including his option buyout), that's not likely. They should at least park him on the bench and play Brandon Belt every day at first and Beltran in left field, which is their best offensive and defensive alignment. In the best-case scenario, if Beltran replaces Huff -- who has actually been below replacement level this year -- it's worth two wins to them the rest of the way, perhaps more given Huff's recent performance (.217/.295/.275 in July) and an obvious inability to play any position. If Beltran replaces Belt, the impact is limited, probably cut in half while also hampering Belt's development. Any other alignment is also suboptimal.

Beltran's contract includes a clause forbidding his team from offering him arbitration, meaning that the Giants can't get any draft picks for him if and when he departs as a free agent. San Francisco gave up six years of control of Zack Wheeler for about 60 games of Carlos Beltran. If Wheeler sees the big leagues at all, the deal will probably end up a losing one for the Giants.

As long as Bochy doesn't decide to offer him his hat, he still has the biggest hat size in MLB probably .
