Now!!!!

TransMonk Jul 28 2011 08:39 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
I can get behind this. With the season he's putting up, I would love to see a two-year deal offered by the Mets for about $8M per with some incentives and possibly an option based on games played.

That contract sounds fair, but it might not be enough.

Frayed Knot Jul 28 2011 08:43 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Somebody needs to monitor the real estate ads in the Sands Point area to see if he puts his house up for sale.
attgig Jul 28 2011 08:44 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
interesting. minus santana, we had the same roster coming into 2011, but there was a lot less enthusiasm behind it.
attgig Jul 28 2011 08:48 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |

agreed. i think it takes 10-12 mil a year at least. that and another big signing... he wants a ring. if he doesn't get one this year, i think we need to resign reyes (obviously) and sign another top of the rotation starter (and maybe keep izzy another year) to convince beltran that we have a shot at dethroning the phillies.

I think Santana coupled with a full year of Wright and Davis would have put us right around where ATL is. Prolly not enough to catch Philly.

Edgy DC Jul 28 2011 08:57 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
All depends on health and depth.
metirish Jul 28 2011 09:06 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
I woukd like two more years of Beltran , I have basically given up on Bay, he is not to be counted on for anything, major salary eating coming with him.
soupcan Jul 28 2011 09:07 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Jason? Oy Bay.
Gwreck Jul 28 2011 09:28 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
I can't see how this depends on Bay. We're a team in NY. Having cash to spend should be our advantage. Bay sucks? Oh well, that's $16M down the drain but shouldn't affect our other free agent signings.
Ceetar Jul 28 2011 09:32 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |

It affects our needs. if he's mashing, the offense is definitely fine, and may not be 'worth' signing Beltran. You could say a lot of _this_ season still depends on Bay.
Vic Sage Jul 28 2011 09:46 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Beltran will be 35 in April, at the start of next season. He's got like no cartilage in his knee. Alderson isn't going to re-sign him. Move on.
Gwreck Jul 28 2011 09:51 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Seriously? It's been a year and half already. Wake me up when Bay's "mashing" starts.
Ashie62 Jul 28 2011 09:52 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Carlos has left the building, for good.
Ceetar Jul 28 2011 09:56 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |

well about 1 season of 'games'. I wasn't saying I expected it, merely that it would mitigate offensive concerns. I could see Bay having a 'not terrible' year next two, but mashing is starting to seem like a lost cause.
Vic Sage Jul 28 2011 10:10 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
the Mets should run a promotion to pay off Bay's contract, where at each home game, fans can pay 5$ to come out of the stands and strike out Bay. They'd make enough to buy him out by the end of the year.

TransMonk Jul 29 2011 09:54 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Cerrone states on his blog today that Boras "will be seeking a five-year, $70 million deal this winter" for Beltran.
metirish Jul 29 2011 10:09 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |

Good luck with that, so if that is a starting point he might well be looking for three years and $45 million . No thanks.
attgig Jul 29 2011 10:12 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |

good thing it's not omar in charge, because he'd end up bidding against himself and tack on 2 more years, and a few more million dollars while he's at it.
Edgy DC Jul 29 2011 10:13 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Man, never sell Boras short.
metirish Jul 29 2011 10:16 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |

True, starting points with Boras often go up and not down. His current team are pretty good at giving out bloated contracts to older players.
Ceetar Jul 29 2011 11:18 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |

I wouldn't go that far. Take Johnny Damon (probably not an unreasonable comparison either) after the '09 season. Was asking for the moon ended up with like 2/12 or something. edit: supposed the Yankees offered 2/12. He was hodling out for like 3/30 + or some such. signed for 1/8.
Frayed Knot Jul 29 2011 12:00 PM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Boras can seek anything he wants but he can't make it happen unless some GM/owner agrees to his figures - and if/when that happens then his numbers were the 'correct' figures all along.

And really, as his agent, that's what he's supposed to say. "My client? Totally washed up. He'll take a minor-league deal; doesn't even need an invitation to camp."
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 29 2011 08:35 PM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
I'd like him at 2/16-20.
Fman99 Jul 29 2011 08:37 PM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Yep, same thing I thought. Two year deal at 7-8 mil per. But he'll be looking for [crossout]Jeter[/crossout] stupid overpaid old guy money.
LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Jul 29 2011 08:38 PM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Exactly. And either someone overpays him for an Ibanez-y 3-year deal (say, a still-high-on-WS-champagne Sabean?), or I kinda see it going down in Damon-like fashion. Either way, it won't be Alderson, I don't think.
Centerfield Jul 30 2011 04:11 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Sure. I'm talking more on emotion than any sense of logic, but we need a middle of the order guy (or two) next year. And none of the names I've heard as being available seem like great fits to me. (Sure, there's that poo-hole guy, but I don't think we can afford him.) What other relatively cost-effective guys are out there that you can slot in at #3 in the lineup.
Centerfield Jul 30 2011 04:11 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
And before any deal is offered, he should be thoroughly examined by the doctor out in Colorado.
Centerfield Jul 30 2011 04:12 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
Incidentally, why hasn't Ike been out to see that doctor? It's not like he's strapped for time. He's in Arizona anyway, it's not that far.
Ashie62 Jul 30 2011 04:23 AM Re: Re-Sign Beltran |
I see Beltran looking for 3 years at roughly 10 mill 9, 8 or so.
