A Decade Gone By

Ten years ago, in the 100 degree heat of Shea Stadium's right field bleachers, many of us met for the first time at the MetsOnline.net Fan Forum Picnic. It was incredibly hot but we lasted all nine innings and saw a Mets win. In my memory this game kicked of the Mets' late season surge but the UMDB shows that the Mets actually lost the next 7 games before turning things around. Personally, I find it hard to believe that I have internet friends that I've known for more than a decade.

The Twin Towers had a month left to stand but I never gave 'em much thought. I was about to get laid off from a job I couldn't stand in part because I had a boss who made a scene when informed I was taking the day off to go to this game. That boss was laid off as well. As I recall it I basically stopped talking to people about the 4th or 5th inning as I could barely concentrate due to the heat. We nevertheless made it down to the South Street Seaport after the game to see Freedy Johnston perform.

Although for some reason Mark Johnson wore a long-sleeve shirt under his jersey. I actually went to the Brooklyn Cyclones game that night for a two-ballpark doubleheader.

I had a great time. Who was that guy that ate three hot dogs in one minute? I forget. And those were the bad Shea hot dogs. The one's that you'd need to call a mouth ambulance after you were done eating them. Just one even. Let's do it again 10 years from today.

i couldn't go that day; i had a reading of my play at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum... a tiny basement space with no air conditioning!

True to her goth roots that girl was. "Although for some reason Mark Johnson wore a long-sleeve shirt under his jersey." I suspect that was one of those 'wicking' type shirts which were still fairly new then and therefore did look odd in the 104 degree heat. "i'm still not convinced any of you actually exist." I don't.

That was a great site, Hochster was ahead of his time. Reminds me of that Astros site we used to occasionally talk about and I think a Boston site too. It had to be 115° on those aluminum stands.

It had to be 115° on those aluminum stands. Is Hoch still doing sports writing? He really had his head on straight at a very early age. The Boston site (Sons of Sam Horn) is still going strong. I think we basically copied the adopting of minor league players from their site.
