Re: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! 2011-12 Season thread

I'm anxious to hear how the pending assault/self defense charge against their 3rd round pick (the DT from Hampton) will play out. The hearing was originally scheduled for July, but no word yet. The team needs an inside pass rush to counter the latest craze of three step drops and the short passing game. An outside rush can't get to the QB in time to stop it, so IMO collapsing the pocket to hurry the QB will be the emerging defensive scheme to counter it.

Put some tape over the name on that Braylon Edwards jersey... and scribble "Burress" on there.

He had shot himself with an illegal hand gun, so that would have made him an ideal Raider.
If he had shot someone else, that would have made him an ideal Raven.
But it looks like his legal issues are behind him, and some of Edwards' are still ahead of him.
Welcome to the Jets, Plaxico.

Would have rather had Edwards, by a long way. (It's amazing how complete a receiver he is, now that he actually catches the ball-- the downfield run blocking is generally superb, and done with gusto.)

But he's not a bad consolation prize, assuming he's operable. (He "visited." Was there a workout/audition for his guaranteed money?)

Re: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! 2011-12 Season thread

I don't know if this belongs in this thread or a WTF thread, but the Bearsss signed ex-Jet Vernon Gholston. That might be the worst personnel move by that team since George Halas cut George Blanda because he couldn't play linebacker.

Now for the Jets, keep an eye on Garrett McIntyre. He is a big (6-3 270) pass rushing outside linebacker the Jets signed during the lockout. He was an effective pass rusher in the CFL last year. The Jets worked him out and really liked him. They gave him a 3 year contract with a signing bonus, so there is at least some interest there above a normal tryout player.

He could turn out to be a real contributor for us in 2011. Of course, he could be a bust, too. My prediction, he ends his NFL career with more sacks than Gholston. (Right now I'm tied with Gholston for career NFL sacks)

He's a highly-motivated, physically-talented failure brought in on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract, on whom they're not counting for anything in particular. It's not a dumb move.

The Jets eke out a season-opening win against Dallas and twin brother Rob's big D defense. I'm not sure how they did it, since the 3/4 of the game i watched, the Jets sucked eggs. when Sanchez threw that INT at the end of the 3rd Q, and the Jets went into the 4th down 14 points, having shown no running game, and with the O-line giving the Sanchize little time to throw, i just rolled over and went to sleep. Not only that, the D was giving up big chunks of yardage to Whitten, Austin and felix Jones, and Dez Bryant seemed like he could do whatever he wanted.

Woke up to learn that the Jets D forced a bunch of turnovers in the 4th, the special teams got a blocked punt/TD and Folk kicked a 50-yarder after a Revis INT.

so that doesn't change the fact that the O-line played for shit, the game plan ran away from the run, and Sanchez is only ever good when on the run, or in a 2-minute drill, or in the playoffs ... which is the mirror image of Romo, who is great, but only for 3.5 quarters of non-post season games.

But its a win, and i'll take it.

Yeah, pretty much.

The Jags should be a team against whom they can dictate pace, including getting the running game back on track. If that doesn't happen, then it's time for some uh-ohs-- three road games against Oakland, New England and Baltimore follow.

There's no truth to the rumor that NFL execs have guns trained on the heads of network producers ready to pull the trigger if/when they allow shots of empty seats to be shown to the viewing public ... but I think the network guys take great care to play it safe just in case.

Something they haven't done enough of in the last two seasons (and the reason they've had to beat a generous Indianapolis and Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh each of the last two years, respectively, just to get in).

Oakland may be a little tricky on the road-- the front four are nasty when healthy, and their running game is as good as any.

the most important unit of any team is the offensive line, and ours is shockingly bad so far this year. We were lucky to escape with a W in Dallas, and the Jags just suck. I think Oakland will give us a all we can handle this week, and if we don't start keeping extra blockers in on passes, we could get the Sanchize hospitalized.

It's getting late early for this team.

OL without Mangold is dreadful (and it wasn't all that hot when Mangold was there).

Shonn Greene is not a feature back. Nor is LT.

Still no front four pass rush, though the different looks last night certainly confused Flacco enough. The defense did enough last night.

The ESPN-led assault on the senses - **GRAPHICS, ANNOUNCERS, COMMERCIALS, PROMOS, STATS, CRAWLS** (not to mention Berman) - is reminding me why I rarely watch MNF unless one of the locals is involved.

And it would be real nice if the pundits (not just on MNF but virtually everywhere) stopped blaming every dropped pass, blown coverage, and sloppy tackle on the lockout and its associated missed off-season workouts and reduction in full-contact practices. -- 'Gee, if only we could take these guys and lock them in dorms 24/7 with the same restrictions as those in private school sororities circa 1955, then we could drill them in two-a-days and skull sessions for six months on end prior to the season starting and really see some good football !'

as bad as they looked throughout most of the 1st half, they beat a bad team by 18 points, so a little credit is due.
but all those 3-and-outs and blown coverages (guys were all alone waiving their hands in the air; the Miami QB just didn't see them) continue to be a bad indicator of what this team is. and is not.

Salfino has a point here. And it's a little galling.

On first and 10 in the first quarter, the Jets are 51.72% run and 48.28% pass. However, in the first quarter, on second and 10 (presumably on incompletions), the Jets run 100% of the time. Last year in the first quarter on second and 10, they ran 82.35% of the. But on second and 9 in the first quarter (presumably after a failed run) the Jets PASS 100% of the time in 2011 and 75% of the time in 2010. So, fail a pass play, run. Fail a run play, pass. This doesn’t seem that hard to defend, does it.

Francesa's branching out!

And then something strange happens around the 4:10 mark of the video. Revis says, "I don't care who said it [was a penalty]. You, Jon Gruden, whoever. I don't care."

Followed by: "Darrelle, stop," from a previously unknown, heavy-breathing voice.

Francesa: "Who's that talking?"

No-longer mystery man: "This is Jared Winley from the Jets PR staff." (Note: Last year, we explained how Winley allegedly was the go-between for Brett Favre's seduction of Jenn Sterger.)

Revis: "This is why nobody wants to get interviewed by him!"

Francesa: "Oh stop, get back. What're you getting on there for?"

Revis: "Whatever, dude."

Winley: "Darrelle, hang up."

Revis: "Bye."

Francesa: "What is he hanging up for?"

That's the curse in the NFL of having a good team - the better you are the fewer day games you get.
And even the day games you do get are more often 4PM games, something which is OK for TV watchers but suxx for ticket holders because, at least for cities in the east or upper mid-west, once you get past about November 1st a 4 o'clock game might as well be a night games from a temperature/darkness standpoint.

so my brother calls me before the game, to make sure i'm going to watch and to assure me that we're going to kick Brady's ass.

But here's the problem... my brother is about 9 years older than me. He was about 16 when the Jets won their super bowl. I was 7. I have no recollection of it. So his fandom is formed by first-hand experience of the Jets' 1 and only championship, and thus he continues to operate under the delusion that it can happen again. I am under no delusion. I recognize the huge cosmic "fuck you" that being a Jets fan signifies. So when he called, i told him the fact that we'd been playing well lately and the Pats poorly and that this was a key game in taking control of the divisional race were all factors that REQUIRED the Jets to crash and burn. Because they had to set us up for the disappointment first, or it would not be sufficiently painful.

He scoffed.

But he didn't take my call this morning.

It is weirdly fascinating. Even as it was happening, a tiny part of me was excited about the improbability of that last drive.

Plus, between the offense, the cult around the QB, and the bouncy vibe around Denver, the whole thing feels very "Friday Night Lights." Even with the Tebow media overkill, it's oddly charming.

Was his decent season 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, or 1983? (Probably not 1980, but still.) Compares perfectly fine to O'Brien. He's top 15 or 20 if not for AJ Duhe. But O'Brien crumbled in the big one against Miami too. Except it was more literal in his case.

Is O'Brien so grossly superior? Check the numbers. Only if you discount rushing yards and getting sacked and sacked and sacked and sacked and sacked.

I've long since given up interest in football. But not in justice!

1981, but 1982 was good, too. So, granted, a good season-and-a-half.

But take away Duhe, and Hot Toddy still threw something like 150 interceptions in green (as compared to 120-something scores). Jay Cutler led the league in picks in '09 with 26, and Phillip Rivers is on pace for 29 this year; Cutler's season ranks among the most quizzically awful seasons for an established QB in the last several decades, and Rivers is on the way there. Todd's career INT percentage is worse than either QB's in those seasons. It's worse than Bobby friggin' Douglass'.

O'Brien at his best equaled or surpassed Todd at his best. O'Brien at his worst didn't do much to win ballgames; Todd at his worst-- which was often-- actively murdered his teams' chances to win at all.

Good double-post, Ashie.

You're comparing guys across several decades when teams were looking for different things at different times from their quarterbacks. Joe Namath, completing 50.1% of his passes, threw for more picks than touchdowns also. He led the league in interceptions four times. And he's number one.

I just want Richard Todd to get some of the same breaks as his QB brethren.

Re: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! 2011-12 Season thread

No one posts when the Jets win. It must be more fun to bash them? Or is it more comfortable to be miserable that it is to be happy?

Jets are 7-5 and tied with the Broncos, Raiders, Bengals, and Titans for the last playoff spot. The Jets are tied for the worst conference record of these teams (5-5) and lost to the Broncos and Raiders so it's going to be hard to win tiebreakers. The Jets need to win out to have a solid chance to get in. They aren't getting the East and the Steelers and Ravens will both go at least 12-4, even though Roesthlisbibble hurt himself today.

Week 14 - 12/11 - vs Kansas City - they're saying Palko is the worst quarterback in the league. I figure if the Jets don't win this one they don't deserve to make the playoffs. I said the same things about Tebow and the Broncos before that game too.

Week 15 - 12/18 - at Philadelphia - Vick will be back in Week 14, good for the Eagles because Vince Young is gawd-awful. Somehow Vick tricked people last year into forgetting that he was a terrible passer before he was locked up, but once he started bounce-passing five yard outs again people began remembering. This team has flushed its season down the toilet, Andy Reid's fat ass might finally get fired.

Week 16 - 12/24 (Saturday) - vs Giants - I think this is the toughest game left on the schedule. Maybe they'll be able to run with Bradshaw back. Supposedly they're banged up on defense, but who knows what guys will be back by the time this game rolls around. I think Eli has been really good. I am always wrong when I pick this team, I'm in a picks league and I'm 1-6 picking any game involving the Giants. So since I think this is the toughest game left then the Jets will probably run away with it.

Week 17 - 1/1 - at Miami - I have no fear of the Dolphins, no matter how many mediocre and shitty teams they blow out. On the other hand, the Jets might really be a mediocre-to-shitty team, especially when Sanchize is up to his tricks.

Denver - vs Chicago, vs New England, at Buffalo, vs Kansas City (6-3 against the AFC, beat the Jets)
Oakland - at Green Bay, vs Detroit, at Kansas City, vs San Diego (5-5 AFC, beat the Jets)
The Jets only need to finish ahead of one of the Broncos or Raiders, because one of those teams will win the West. The Broncos should lose to New England, and the Raiders definitely lose to Green Bay, so one of them should max out at ten wins. Plus the Raiders have been bad since Campbell got hurt. And I refuse to believe in the Broncos. At least one of these teams will finish with less wins than the Jets.

Tennessee - vs Saints, at Indianapolis, vs Jacksonville, at Houston (5-4 AFC)
Chris Johnson is nasty again and their schedule isn't that bad. The Colts are going 0-16 and Jacksonville is bad. The Saints can stink it up on the road, and the Texans are on their third quarterback. Hopefully the good Saints team shows up. Maybe for Houston Tyler Yates will play well and Andre Johnson will be back and the last week will actually mean something.

Cincinnati - vs Houston, at St. Louis, vs Arizona, vs Baltimore (6-4 AFC)
Even though they haven't beaten a good team yet (just like the Jets), I think this is the biggest threat. I hope Houston's defense and running game is enough to get them a win, and that Baltimore still has something to play for in week 17.

If Sanchez hadn't thrown that pick-six against the Broncos there's no way the Jets lose that game. That would've made this picture a lot prettier. Damn you Sanchez. For some reason I still think the guy might still become an above-average quarterback, but that's probably just because he's mysteriously performed in the fourth quarter and in the playoffs. And it's just because I'm a moron. I like the way Plaxico is starting to play, and Kerley is coming back. Hopefully they let Leonhard field all the punts from here on out. And the defense can keep playing pretty well, and Greene can run people over in the cold weather.

I see it like this:
Denver 9-7
Oakland 8-8
Tennessee 10-6
Cincinnati 10-6
Jets 11-5

Wildcard playoff: Jets 20, Houston 14: Yates plays poorly thrown into the fire of a playoff game
Divisional playoff: Jets 17, Baltimore 7: 5 interceptions thrown by Flacco, 2 and a fumble for Sanchez
AFC championship: Jets 52, New England 3: Fuck the Patriots
Super Bowl: Green Bay 38, Jets 24: Jets need a pass rusher before they can slow down Rodgers. Maybin's not that guy.

The Jets are playing decently over the last two games, but not, y'know, all that well. Washington was in last week's game until the 55-minute mark, and the Bills game, by all rights, should have been lost.

I like the Jets' chances-- to an extent-- as long as the line play remains solid, and the injuries don't pile up any more. But the difference between this team and, say, the Bengals is that the other guys have handily beaten everyone they should, while the Jets have generally escaped those sorts of games.

Weird thing about that whole debacle of an afternoon for NY/NJ football is that it didn't manage to kill either of their playoffs hopes - even though any team losing twice to the Redskins in the same season should be automatically excluded just on that basis alone. In fact neither team even seems to have their odds damaged as Pete Rozelle's dream of having every mediocre team still in the hunt heading into the final few weeks lives on.

The only thing yesterday really did was kill the possibility of [u:2va2v1l7]Both[/u:2va2v1l7] teams making it and even that's only on account of their upcoming head-to-head - and that just makes Saturday's game a bit more fun.

Cromartie is no slouch, and the best part of his game is man-to-man on deep routes down the sideline, which seems to be how the Giants used Cruz last I saw (is this still the case with all 3 of them healthy?). The way to beat the Jets in the passing game is to ignore Revis and Cromartie and throw to the middle of the field. Kyle Wilson won't be stopping the Giants 3rd receiver.

Yup.

A) I believe Houston is already starting backups at many key positions. I'm not sure who they would sit them for.

B) In my mind, it would behoove them to play the Titans as hard as they can in preparation for the playoffs. They may be the 3 seed, but they are not the third best team in the conference playoffs. If they have any hope at all of winning playoff games, they need all the Sunday practices they can get.

The pick is certainly not a lock. If you know how confidence points work, I only have it as a five.

I've done quite OK picking games this year, though.

After taking a little time to breathe and think about it calmly, it occurs to me that he may not be done.

-- A change of QB coach might do some good. Matt Cavanaugh's most recent jobs before coming to the Jets? OC of the Ravens during the Dilfer/Grbac era (the ne plus ultra of "you don't need offense to win"); later, after being relieved of playcalling duties, he served as their de facto QB coach, grooming Kyle Boller; then, OC at Pitt, where he chose to start Tyler Palko over Joe Flacco. It occurs to me that this guy-- whose only real "success" has been in play-not-to-lose offenses-- MIGHT not be the guy to maximize Sanchez's potential.

-- Sanchez has never been a super-accurate short-pass QB; forcing him to check-down continually over the course of two seasons may have messed with his confidence/timing on the intermediate-to-long-range stuff, while producing only limited improvement (and that's being kind) on the short stuff. His judgement issues on some short stuff-- in full evidence today-- may have their roots in this, as well.

-- The massive WR churn during these three years can't have helped. With timing and hot routes becoming an ever-more important part of the passing game, the lack of continuity here (especially during/between the last two years) has almost-definitely disrupted this portion of the offense to some extent. And though his accuracy was at times brutal, this year's iteration of the corps dropped a TON of balls on him (by my count, Holmes had at least five key drops in the last 2 games).

He's been terrible, and a big part of the reason I haven't been able to watch these last few games with my curse-absorbent daughter awake or in the room. But he ain't necessarily done.

I used to be a "defender of the Sanchize" but, much like trying to defend Rey Ordonez at the plate, it just doesn't work.

-blaming the QB coach is a cop-out. Coaches don't fumble the ball, they don't throw interceptions straight to defensive linemen, and they don't check-down to Shonn Greene on every 3rd and long.
-Sanchez is completely inaccurate on long throws and not even accurate on short ones! Most of the INTs/drops are HIS fault, even when he hits a receiver they often have to stop for the ball, I've never seen him hit a guy in-stride down the field.
This isn't a small thing. Chad Pennington was successful with a noodle arm because he completed a high percentage of his passes and properly led receivers. If you can't throw down the field and you can't be 60+% accurate (and Sanchez isn't even close) then what DO you bring to the table?
-the nicest throw down the field that I saw yesterday was thrown by Jeremy Kerley. Just saying.

Its true that Jets receivers (and Shonn "stonehands" Greene) drop some balls, but I don't think they drop more than most other teams and I do think that a lot of their drops are partially a result of Sanchez constantly throwing behind them.

Just watching (much of) the two games yesterday pointed out stark differences in how to handle trouble.

* Eli, when things broke down, managed to heave the ball away safely and legally (no grounding penalties) most of the time

* and even Romo, a guy I'm pretty sure isn't spending his off days at MENSA picnics, at least had the good sense to take a sack when all his other options were spent

* Sanchez, on the other hand, would have several 300-pounders hanging off him but even that never stopped him from trying desperation shot-put-like passes which, more often than not, wound up in the hands of Dolphins usually after first hitting off two helmets and some lineman's ass.

Re: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! 2011-12 Season thread

i have been unhappy with Sanchez's development, too, but lets shed a little reality on the situation.
1) His QB rating, and all his other stats, indicate substantial improvement in each of his 3 seasons (including this one) [the only negative stat that went up this year was the number of sacks his offensive lineman caused him to take];
2) He came out after his freshman year, so he's only now at the age that most NFL quarterbacks get drafted in the first place;
3) He has decent arm strength and adequate mobility, with more than average overall athleticism;
4) He has already shown an ability to win games -- to win them late, to win them at the end of the season, to win them in the playoffs.

Before we throw the baby out with the bathwater, i would like to see him get another shot under a different OC, who devised an offense around his strengths (play action, throwing on the run, rolling out) and a re-emergent running game, rather than Shotty's plan of giving Sanchez all kinds of options and calls to make at the line, while under ridiculous amounts of pressure. The fact is, Sanchez has twice taken us to the AFC finals, so he's not incapable of leading a winning team. And he is still at an age and point in his development where improvement is not only possible, but likely, given his history of improvement to date.

"Sanchez Sucks" is just a knee-jerk reaction to a shitty season. About a dozen teams in the league would be glad to take a chance on him. Now, whether he can climb into the top-tier of QBs is yet to be determined, but it's too soon to give up on him.

I'm also quite certain that I heard the very same sort of things out of Giants fans in, say, the 2006 offseason about Eli.

There's room for growth here. Whether he eventually achieves that, well, that's something else.

Re: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! 2011-12 Season thread

I disagree strongly with regard to your statement that his arm strength is adequate... He completed TWO passes over 30yds all season! And I still maintain that his accuracy stinks, particularly for someone who can't throw deep.
I'd also take issue with the statement that "he" got us to two AFC championship games... The defense and the running game did that with Sanchez along for the ride.

Would a "dozen" teams in the league want him as you claim? I'd say no. But more importantly I think he has NO SHOT at "elite" status. His upside is Joe Flacco and I think the improvements have been too few and too small.

Its hard to break it down, because you can't account for who would rather have a tiny upgrade now and who would rather have a prospect or a guy with greater potential for later, but here's my best guess based on the logic that you'd take all the guys currently better than Sanchez over him plus the guys who are about equal to him NOW but with higher upside, plus the guys slightly behind him but with much higher upside (but leaving out guys who have done nothing at all like Ponder):

Its a rough sketch, but a basis for further conversation/debate:

Teams that would not want Sanchez AT ALL:
NYG (Manning), PHI (Vick), DAL (Romo), GB (Rodgers), CHI (Cutler), DET (Stafford), NO (Brees), ATL (Ryan), CAR (Newton), NE (Brady), IND (Manning), HOU (Schaub), BAL (Flacco), PIT (Roethlisberger), CIN (Dalton), SD (Rivers), KC (Cassel)

Teams that arguably are upgraded by Sanchez, I'd rather stick with who they have personally:
TB (Freeman), STL (Bradford), OAK (Palmer)

Teams that arguably are upgraded by Sanchez, I'd stick with Sanchez personally but I think its pretty debateable:
SF (Smith), ARZ (Kolb), MIA (Moore), BUF (Fitzpatrick), TEN (Hasselbeck/Locker), DEN (Tebow)

Teams that WOULD be upgraded by Sanchez:
WAS (Grossman), MIN (Ponder), SEA (Jackson), JAC (Gabbert), CLE (McCoy)

You can also add the following QBs, presently backups, free agents to be, or draft picks, that some of the team at the bottom would arguably rather have (to me I'd rather have the first 3 given the choice): Andrew Luck, RG3, Matt Flynn (FA after this year), Jason Campbell (also a FA)

So its 11 (8 after the draft and Flynn signing) by my count but as few as 2 (the 2 draft picks, Flynn, and if you like Campbell) and as many as 14 if you give Sanchez all the toss ups and don't like either FA or draft pick.

Huh?

He's now 25, having entered USC in Fall 2005 and wasn't drafted until Spring 2009
He didn't start all the time in college so maybe only had one full year as the main guy under center before arriving at the NFL but certainly wasn't a freshman or 19 y/o at draft time.

And, yes, I had to look all that up, but did so specifically because I knew that the NFL retains a tight set of reins on when players can declare for the draft meaning there was no way he could simply waltz into the league after just his freshman year.

Sanchez redshirted his 1st year (Matt Leinart was the Sr. QB), he sat his 2nd year behind John David Booty, he started a bit his 3rd year (only after Booty got hurt), and was the starter his 4th year as a "redshirt junior"... He gave up one year of eligibility to enter the draft, which is pretty much the norm. The only thing abnormal for him (compared to most top pick QBs) is that he was only the starter in college for one full year.

1) analyzing EXACTLY how many teams might want him, as opposed to the 12 i threw out there for arguments' sake, is an intriguing waste of time, especially considering the analysis ended up with a result of between 2 and 14, which is as meaningless a result as one could expect.

2) He played 1 year of college QB; that isn't like "most QBs coming out" nor is it even like very many. It's the experiential (not chronological) equivalent of a freshman coming out, who has now completed 3 more seasons at the pro level, instead of the college level. He was unusually inexperienced to come out and become a starting QB.

3) yes, the team made it to the AFC finals two years based on defense and a running game, but those folks who actually watched him play instead of barking at him from behind beer glasses, saw him play pretty well in those post-seasons. And for better or worse, QBs lead their teams. And his leadership qualities are some of his strongest attributes, so dismissing them utterly is predictable but unpersuasive.

4) the number of deep balls he threw this year is ENTIRELY about the OC and the play-calling and says NOTHING about his arm strength. He doesn't have a cannon, but a blind drunk can still see he has plenty of arm. More than Montana ever had, and enough to be a successful pro QB. Yes, inaccuracy is always going to be a problem for him, but every year his % has gone up, his TDs have gone up, his INTs have gone down. And I don't think his improvement has leveled off. You do, apparently. OK. Time will tell.

I was pointing out the possible answers, to me the number is 8 (11 teams are worse-off but 3 of those teams will get Luck, RG3, and Flynn)

Thats not what you said, though. You claimed that he came out after his freshman year and that he was "only now at the age that most NFL quarterbacks get drafted in the first place", both statements are untrue and even if you clumsily meant the first statement to mean he only started one full year in college, his current age of 25 is 3-4 years older than the age at which most are drafted. He was "unusually inexperienced" to start his first year in the NFL, but not at all unusually old.

He might have played well enough in those post-seasons (excepting the SD game that was one despite him)
You want to talk leadership? I think Thomas Jones was the ackowledged (even by Sanchez himself) leader of that first AFC championship team, and I doubt Sanchez was last year's leader either. And this year they were led to 8-8 by whoever did the leading and had a star player quitting on the team in the last game. Not such great leadership going on. If you dont want to blame Sanchez for the offense's shitty leaderless crap this year thats fine, but then you cant credit him for past leadership successes either.

4) the number of deep balls he threw this year is ENTIRELY about the OC and the play-calling and says NOTHING about his arm strength. He doesn't have a cannon, but a blind drunk can still see he has plenty of arm. More than Montana ever had, and enough to be a successful pro QB. No, its not the playcalling. I watched him look downfield and be unwilling to throw and check down...particularly on 3rd down and long. he also flat out missed receivers when he did throw down field, potentially costing him trust (and rightfully so) such that less calls were made to throw, but he still had tewrrible numbers when trying it.

you say his completion % and TDs went up while INTs went down. But i see his Yards per catch and yards per attempt number falling, proof that he cant throw down field and is actually getting worse at moving the ball. and the INTS have gone UP by 5 (13 to 18) from last year, so i dont know where you got that from. he's also managed to fumble the ball 10 times a year (29 in 3 years)... thats pretty bad (7th 5th and 6th most in the NFL in the 3 years)

I just dont see improvement.

Jets need to do more than not name captains

January 2, 2012 9:46 PM By BOB GLAUBER bob.glauber@newsday.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.
There are months of big decisions ahead for the Jets, but Rex Ryan didn't need 24 hours to figure out one thing he'll do differently in an effort to prevent the sort of collapse that left the Jets at 8-8 and on the outside looking in at the NFL playoffs.
A day after Ryan watched his team fizzle in a 19-17 loss to the Dolphins, he decided to ditch the idea of team captains.

Admitting he didn't have his finger on the pulse of his team and realizing that one of his captains, Santonio Holmes, had become a divisive figure whose self-centered shenanigans helped blow apart team chemistry, Ryan will go back to the approach he took in his first two years with the team. No captains.

"The issue right now is building this football team and getting it back to where you're playing against 53 of us," Ryan said Monday at his wrap-up news conference. "That's taking away the individual, but what makes us strong is that football team. I don't think we were as close as we were in the past."

Ryan believed that making Holmes a team captain shortly after he was signed to a five-year, $45-million contract would prompt him to become a better leader. Instead, Holmes was at the center of a problem that festered most of the season and exploded in Sunday's finale. Holmes was benched by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer because he'd gotten into a shouting match in the huddle.

Ryan should have issued a public rebuke to Holmes but chose not to Monday, instead handling his petulant receiver with kid gloves and saying he simply "made a mistake."

Sorry, Rex. This has been a pattern with one of your best players, not just a mistake.
Rather than simply remove the captaincy from Holmes and appoint another more reliable leader, Ryan decided to do away with the idea of captains altogether. I can understand his desire to have better team chemistry, but eliminating captains alone doesn't strengthen unity. Choosing the right ones does, and Rex chose wrong with Holmes. Very wrong.

Ryan also conceded he didn't have the right feel for this team the way he did the previous two years.
"Normally I'm a guy that has the pulse of his team," Ryan said. "I don't think I had the pulse of our team the way I've done in the past. When I met with players [Monday], I think that became clear to me."

But Ryan's concerns about chemistry shouldn't mask other problems that contributed to an 8-8 season. There are many issues that need fixing:

Mark Sanchez took a major step back. Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum say he'll be back as the starter, but why not bring in a veteran such as Kyle Orton to compete with him, and replace him if necessary?

Right tackle Wayne Hunter is a serious liability. He contributed to Sanchez's getting sacked 39 times this season.
Ryan said he's retaining offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who is a candidate for the head-coaching job in Jacksonville. If he returns, he will deal with an offense that regressed significantly on his watch in 2011. The feeling here is that line coach Bill Callahan, a veteran play-caller, should be elevated.

Plaxico Burress wasn't the consistent deep threat the Jets had hoped for, and they'll need to bring in another veteran or draft a receiver in April.

Holmes is coming back, according to the Jets, but he needs a serious attitude adjustment. If he continues to pout, he needs to be disciplined -- or traded.

Linebacker Bart Scott is likely on the way out. And the Jets need help with the pass rush.
Shonn Greene had his first 1,000-yard season, but the Jets need to see if there's a better alternative in the draft or the free-agent market.

And the Jets need an upgrade at safety, especially if Jim Leonhard can't get back to form after a second straight season-ending injury. Eric Smith was a huge liability in pass coverage.

Throw in the chemistry issues, and there is a long way to go for this team to be in position to back up Ryan's incessant Super Bowl predictions.

He said after the Miami loss that he believes "we'll win the Super Bowl and will believe it for th
e next 15 years."

But with all the problems facing his team, Ryan's words are starting to ring hollow.

I totally disagree. The Jets have played 6 playoff games in 3 season of Ryan and have yet to finish under .500. I don't think he had all the talent you think he did. The Jets were weaker on the O-line than last year or the year before and without getting stronger anywhere else on offense.

As far as players...
I've already shared my feelings on Sanchez.
Mangold, Ferguson, and Moore are amazing. Slausson is fine at LG, Hunter was a great depth player but they need a starting RT and one more guy for line depth. Can we call Ducasse a bust yet?
Keller is fine, if they're sticking with Sanchez I'd like to see another TE who can both block and catch because that would benefit the run game in two tight end sets, which the jets could use more of with noodle-arm.
I like what Burress brought to the team in the redzone and I'd bring him back, he has a new found maturity and plays the right way. (Don't underestimate the run-blocking he brings either), I assume they're stuck with Holmes so not really worth discussing him. A better 3rd option would be nice unless Kerley really develops fast.
Greene is a decent player and I think his passblocking has gotten better (he's still no tomlinson) but he is a between the tackles runner who had STONEHANDS... I'd like to see someone who can reliably catch passes out of the backfield and Tomlinson may not return.

On defense the young d-line is fine, Harris is the man, Pace is ok, and Westerman/Maybin are excellent backups/roleplayers. Scott needs to go. He's old and can't cover well, he's really only a run stopper at this point. Revis and Cro are amazing, I get mad at Wilson a lot but do many teams really have a better 3rd corner?
On defense I'd say the needs are an OLB pass-rusher to replace the injured Bryan Thomas' spot (and put Wetserman/Maybin in reserve where they belong) and a safety who can man-up on tough pass-catching tight ends, who burned the Jets a lot this year. If Leonard is healthy it should be him and a new guy back there with one of Smith/Pool gone.

I'd also replace Folk if possible, I think he was towards the bottom of the league on kickoff length and the field position game is big for this team

Admittedly I know little of the Jets as I am 3000 miles removed, but I think your post makes my point: you refer to three-fifths of the OL as "amazing" and are content (it seems) with the TE, RB and one half (at least) of the WR corps. On D, a "fine D line" and two amazing corners...sounds like the only place you're truly unhappy with is the kicking game. Given that, Rex should've gotten more from this team, it seems.

Two points:
-You generally summed up my feelings well but left one thing out: I was NOT AT ALL satisfied with the Quarterback, in terms of his overall production OR his development from last year. The QB is damn important in football and only by being the very best at all other aspects of the game (see Jets 2 years ago, 49ers this year) can you do well with a poor QB.

-the jets got blown out of a few games, but 8-8 is usually a few bounces away from 10-6, that's just how the league works. I don't believe in firing coaches for going 8-8 (or even 6-10) when they have a 4 playoff wins in the previous 2 seasons. Pobodies Nerfect, as the magnet on my friend's refrigerator says.

Look at how the Giants have finished every year since the Superbowl, with Giant (pun intended) collapses! Coughlin was safe though as he was riding the wave of past success. Ryan sshould be safe at least one more year off what he has accomplished to date.

The coordinators, on the other hand, should be judged on the overall quality of their units, and the Jets offense was absolutely putrid. I want Schotteheimer gone.

Re: J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! 2011-12 Season thread

Bam!

Rookie Greg McElroy rips Jets' corrupt mindset

Greg McElroy had a unique perspective, watching things unravel around the Jets while rehabbing a dislocated right thumb that ended his season in September.

"It's definitely not a fun place to be, I can assure you," the rookie quarterback said Wednesday on a Birmingham, Ala., radio station "It's the first time I've ever been around extremely selfish individuals, but I think that's maybe the nature of the NFL. But there were people within our locker room that didn't care if we won or lost, as long as they had their good [individual] games, and that's the disappointing thing."

The Jets' 8-8 season flamed out in Sunday's season-ending loss to the Dolphins, when wide receiver Santonio Holmes was pulled off the field in the closing minutes by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in part because teammates believed Holmes had quit and didn't like his body language.

McElroy was hurt in the Sept. 1 preseason finale against the Eagles and went on injured reserve. Although he sat out the season, he was around the facility and at practices and games.

"It's going to take a lot to come together next year," he said, "and I think the fact that we struggled this year really led to a corrupt mind-set within the locker room. But I think we are going to regroup and I know we'll be a better team because of the trials and tribulations this year."

General manager Mike Tannenbaum, speaking to Mike Francesa on WFAN Wednesday, once again said the Jets should have done more to address the chemistry problems. But he disputed McElroy's description of the locker room.
"We knew there were issues during the season and we didn't get it done," Tannenbaum said. "We thought we addressed some of them, but we didn't do a good enough job and that manifested itself in the huddle this past Sunday. We have to do a better job, Santonio has to do a better job. And we will.

He added: "But I don't think we have a corrupt locker room."

However, McElroy, who won the 2010 national championship at Alabama under Nick Saban, believes the me-first approach of some players cost the Jets a legitimate shot at the Lombardi Trophy.

"Quite frankly, if you go down the roster, there's no reason we shouldn't have made a Super Bowl run," McElroy said. "The talent top to bottom is pretty remarkable and that's the disappointing thing . . . It doesn't matter how much talent you have, if you don't come together as a group and figure things out and withstand the difficulties of the season, you are never going to amount to anything.

"Coach Saban preached that over and over again, and I think this is probably the first time it's ever applied, because we had people that refused to buy in, and I don't know if those people are going to be here next year."

Notes & quotes: Tannenbaum on Mark Sanchez: "His rate of growth isn't where it needs to be, but I think the trajectory of his career after three years is . . . Do I think he's going to be Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or Drew Brees? Obviously, that would be hard to say as of today. But I do think we can win a lot of games with Mark as our quarterback." . . . CBS studio analyst and former Jets QB Boomer Esiason said of Sanchez on Boston's WEEI: "If you watched Mark Sanchez the last month of the season, he was like a Chihuahua standing on 36th Street entering the Midtown Tunnel, eyes bigger than you know what, and just so shaky."

At a minimum, the feeling is that Sanchez needs to be pushed harder from within.

“We have to bring in another quarterback that will make him work at practice,” one player told Mehta. “He’s lazy and content because he knows he’s not going to be benched.”

Not really a bold statement to say you'd want a healty Peyton, but nobody is going to know that he'll be healthy until he plays and even then he may not stay healty for long.
The lazyness stuff is damning though, or at least it would be with a legit source.
People were criticizing McElroy for speaking up, but the real criticism should be ddirected at whoever is ANONYMOUSLY calling their teammate out in the papers. Real low.

Enough. It's over, already.

Spent the entire SYR game having to read, again and again on ESPN's fucking insipid ticker, all of the Sanchez quotes. ENOUGH.

Mangold said the unnamed quotes are weak and bullshit. (a)
I trust him more than the press any day.

Still, Sanchez ... don't suck next year!!

(a) I believe he said disconcerting but weak and bullshit
sounds better!

Sources say Sanchez and Brunell were feasting on fried chicken and beer when the defense was on the field.

It was pretty funny when he was eating a hot dog on
the bench and got caught on camera.

Sparano, eeeek, doesn't inspire much joy for me.

Yeah, but are you gonna tell him that?
