Is anybody interested in participating in a CPF Biggest Loser competition?

Ceetar and attgig I'm talking to YOU. Of course, its open to anyone who thinks they need to lose a few.

HEY! i'd be in - though, if ceetar really goes at it, he has the potential to kick my arse.

what's at stake?

Why not get serious on this? or something. Everyone weight in and get to the starting line? I have no idea how the show works, never watched it, but I presume everyone posts their weight, and goal weight? Update every month or so and we can draw up all sorts of funky graphs and percentages and stuff?

I weighed myself at the gym today. 7/28: 256lbs.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

I'm out - I'm too close to goal weight to want to get in on this (I would like to be about 4-5 pounds less than I am now, but I don't think that's a contest-worthy amount).

But best of luck to you guys - let's make the CPF a lean, mean rooting machine!

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

yeah, i only need to get down to 189 for my BMI to no longer trigger the overweight flag, so that's my target.

bmi isn't the best tool to use, but it's handy and online and stupidly easy to measure, even if it's somewhat wrong and sometimes misguided. it's kindof like measuring pitchers by wins.

I'm out too. I'm down to about 155, which is the lowest I think I've been since I was in high school (granted, I'm only 5'8") and will be running hard the rest of the year.

I'm actually looking to GAIN weight starting this fall. I'd like to add 5-10 pounds of muscle before next summer.

I'm only about 4-5 lbs over the weight I normally set for myself as a goal so I'd have less to wager. I'd still participate, that 4-5 lbs is an eternal nag to me.

I will join too. I weighed 143 when I got home today from vacation, and I would like to get down to 129. However, that is only 14 pounds. Is there a percentage type of thing or what?

Edit: I have a goal of getting into the dress I got for my daughters wedding on October 1, but playing along with you guys should make it a little more fun.

217, which is about where I've been the last few years. At my heaviest, I was around 230; I got down to 185 a few years back.

Big occasion dresses are a great motivator. The dress I wanted to wear for MK's Bar Mitzvah gave me a lot of incentive :)

~190, oughta be ~175, could be ~170.

If anyone wants a concurrent get-in-shape challenge, me & Wifey Bucket just started 100 push-ups.

If we do this right, will be doing 100 pushups in a shot by 9/11 (I max out at about 15 now).

I suppose depending who's ambitious and how ambitious we can get %age loss, and % of goal, and total weight loss, and close weight loss in a month to the schafer player of the month and wutevas.

123.6, which is .4 of a pound below my official Weight Watchers goal weight.

Ideally I'd like to be 120 or 121, to have some wiggle room on the scale.

124.2 this month. .6 pounds in the wrong direction.

On the other hand, I'm only .2 of a pound above goal weight, and just had my 30th consecutive Weight Watchers weigh-in where I was within two pounds of goal weight. Which is what maintenance is all about.

But I'd still like to drop 2-4 pounds. I need to knuckle down.

Tipped in this morning at 153.2. Banging out 12 miles of running the last two days seems to have helped, I've been sitting around 155-156 for most of August.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

Wifey Bucket's new digital scale informs me that my weight fluctuates by 5 or 6 pounds duing the week. But I'm pretty much still 190.

I am pushing up 41 at once, beginning week 5. I also ran like a mutha in August but it doesn't seem to have had any effect.

Wifey Bucket is down 20+.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

Thanks be for the foil wrestlin' team jumpsuit-- I'm sitting at 259 with a bullet. (And that's with no running this month.)

The pushups are sitting at 27 (up from a disgusting sub-20). But that'll change with more practice.

I'm down a few in September, I'm calling it 187, slow but something.

Pushups up to 55 in one shot, I've stalled on the 100 program, did week 5 twice, then week 6, now I'm doing week 5 again.

Just about the same as last month for me, call it 187.

Pushups up to 65.

The "100 pushups" program should really be called 55 pushups, because that's about where I plateau.

Was going in the wrong direction to bother posting any updates. I was at 201 when I jumped into this thread precipitously, but failed to change my ways. I left my job at 208.5 and vowed to recommit, nonetheless peaking at 211 after an Italian dinner.

Down to 202.5 this morn. I see I gave a 160 goal, but 170 is probably more realistic.

Hoping Santa brings me some exercise equipment (or lipo) to reverse the effects of gravity since my gut now hangs over my belt.

If i wasn't so far 'in the hole' so to speak, that'd work for me. See if I can stay vigilant enough to lose a couple of pounds though. Really having trouble with jump-starting any serious weight loss though, and I feel like i'm heavy enough that it's an "object at rest tends to stay at rest" thing. That 250lbs pounding repeatedly on my feet and against my chest when trying to take deep breaths is extremely uncomfortable and painful. I think that's part of the reason It hurts so much more when I run outside too, less cushioning than on the treadmill.

i haven't done a single pushup since my initial try. but i'm going to need to start. i just signed up for one of those tough mudder things, in may, so i should probably get some strength training in.

As of yesterday morning tipping in at 153.6 lbs to start 2012. Still in that 150-155 range but I'd like to be at the low end of it. Managed to get down to 150 for all of about 3 days in 2011.

I blame my girlfriend. I graduated college in 2005 at 225 pounds (I'm 6'5 so that's fine), I was still under 230 when I met her a year and a half ago. She cooks and she's taken up the time that was once spent on physical activities!

Always be safe. That's important.

I'll update the chart with January's too this month. I should be down ~5, which would be an acceptable per month rate if I could maintain it for a year.

Late weigh in. 153.8 this morning. My new idea is to not drink alcohol every day as it leads to too much late night snacking.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

124.6 today.

Considering how I carbed up for Saturday's half marathon and ate for recovery (ok, celebration) afterward, I'm grateful to be where I am. .6 pounds above goal weight and within two pounds of goal for the 38th consecutive month.

I'd still like to be a little lighter, but for today I'm just grateful that this past weekend didn't sink me.

253. technically a pound up but I was hovering around 254-255 earlier in the month and sorta have been sloppy/lazy/etc this last 10 days or so. can I get below 250 by June 1st? only time will tell.

FWIW my brother swears by Atkins-style low-carb diets having just used one to drop some 70+ pounds off his 5'-6"-ish frame in well under a year's time.

crazy unhealthy though.

I prefer to eat nothing but carbs (seriously, I eat way too many carbs)

No carbs is unhealthy.

Low carbs can be ok.

I'd like to eat nothing but crabs.

True, a few ounces of those 70-pounds lost were skin off his face when he suddenly collapsed on the sidewalk after losing the first 50.

My dad lost close to 100 lbs on an Atkins diet. Then he gained it all back. It's not sustainable long term as a solution, if you ask me (or him).

As opposed to being the better part of 100 pounds overweight?

Look, he saw doctors before and during the whole thing. His cholesterol levels went up "slightly" he said and, although I don't know if he got a specific breakdowns, typically via this kind of diet that the "good" cholesterol reading (HDL) tends to go up in addition to the LDL so it close to balances out.

Besides, nobody eats NO carbs, it's just a matter of eating less while cutting out certain kinds entirely and then maintaining it with some reasonable number which is significantly below what helped you put on all the weight in the first place.

And as for what happens when you go off, if you go off of ANY diet and go right back to the way you were eating/living when you were putting on all kinds of excess weight then, yeah, you're going to put it back on. Not sure that Atkins-type plans are any more susceptible to that than any other.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

I think that you're more likely to regain if you go through deprivation to lose the weight. If you can manage portion control and don't feel deprived, you're less likely to regain the weight than you are if your dieting is drastically different from your "normal" eating.

After 38 consecutive months of weighing in within two pounds of goal weight at Weight Watchers, I feel pretty comfortable with this statement.

That said, I don't disagree with FK's basic premise. His brother's weight loss is fabulous and he's much healthier as a result of it. So long as he maintains a healthy lifestyle, he's much better off than he was before the Atkins-esque plan.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

I mean obviously if you're just overweight and 'healthy'/younger like I am, something like the Atkins isn't a big deal as a weight loss plan (and not as a 'healthy diet'/maintenance thing).. Besides, you read these reports of people that did things like the Twinkie diet and were healthier afterwards. (Or the doppelbock fast, that one's tempting..)

I'm tempted by something like that, except I love pizza/beer/bread/pasta/beer and it simply wouldn't work. My problems are not with the type of diet but with my own willpower and urges. I've reached a point where I'm both not committed enough to lose weight, but committed enough that I make myself feel guilty for every damn transgression, which isn't healthy from a mental health standpoint. The issues probably go much deeper than that too. Maybe I should see a shrink.

Commitment/focus is key. When I was losing, I played every mind game in the book to stay on track.

Yeah, problem for me is it usually one takes losing one of those mind games to neutralize the 'win' from the others. And then I come up against the "Am I really not going to go out, enjoy myself, enjoy life because of this ill-fated goal of mine?"

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

i suppose the key would be to recognize how much more you would enjoy life if you were to reach your goal.

portion size is the key to it all. it's also (in part) why i don't lose weight. as a primary cook in our family, i just cook too much, and haven't really made the necessary adjustments to pare that down. i also am a member of the clean plate club.

the biggest adjustment i should probably make is in not finishing up the last half-plateful of food in the pan, saving it instead for a mid-afternoon snack for the next day, in the place of some other thing which is likely less good for me.

yeah, but with robots, all you gotta do is get on the treadmill and go! you'll lose weight and if you tire just replace your batteries. easy.

yeah, that describes me as well. I cook too much, tend to finish my plate, and often my wife's as well. I keep saying I need to plan out dinners in advance, which would help portions/healthiness probably.

m.e.t.b.o.t.'s only hope for weight loss is corrosion. or if he loses his key.

this was so much easier when i had two browsers on my computer. stinkin' it (eye-tee) has restricted me down to only one, so it's much easier to cross post.

if it's IE or Chrome the inprivate or incognito window is 'separate' enough for that.

Besides, nobody eats NO carbs, it's just a matter of eating less while cutting out certain kinds entirely and then maintaining it with some reasonable number which is significantly below what helped you put on all the weight in the first place.

You are correct. Even a strict ketogenic diet (which is really what Atkins is) allows for 50-65 grams carbs a day.

It works but it's only for sedentary people. Also, lot of the weight loss reported is muscle loss, which is denser and "heavier" than fat.

The reason you lose muscle is that your body shutdowns all muscle production in the absence of IGF-1 (in essence, this is growth hormone) which is released when you consume carbs. Ironically, such diets are favored by bodybuilders in cutting phases, because they typically get their growth hormone from "other sources", it allows them to shed without doing cardio.

I spent most of my adult life very fat for my frame at 227 or so. Got sick of feeling fat and hearing about it.

Two years ago I had had enough and started to jog to and fro work to the train, calistentics at work and a limited diet of lotsa yogurt greens and chicken...

Nine months later 179 which is where I am about now. The fear of a diabetic coma helps to keep me from doing much damage now.

Bottom line? I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Good for you man! I went from a high of 202 lbs in the fall of 2001 to 150 lbs in the fall of 2002 through diet and exercise. I've fluctuated a bit since then, at one point gaining half of it back, but I've been consistently in the 150-155 range now for the last three or four years.

That's a great job.

Question: I know this is a way ways off for me, but how do you know what's your 'correct' weight? I was 150-165 when I went to college (12 freaking years ago) I wasn't really what you'd call underweight at that point, but I can't imagine 165 would be my 'target' weight either. I'm decently overweight but 85 pounds seems like a lot.. I think a BMI of 25 for my height is 174 though. How accurate/real are those devices that measure fat% versus muscle?

I've always just gone by what Weight Watchers tells me is the weight range for my height.

It's not the most scientific method, but it works for me.

Don't get hung up on a particular number.
None of us here are 17 y/o anymore so using, as many folks do, that number (or their wedding-day weight, or what the scale said right after they starved themselves for their Bahamas vacation) as their "correct" weight is usually unrealistic.
Obviously if you've got a significant amount of weight to lose you're going to use the scale as a mark of progress. But your 'correct' or ultimate target weight should be the one where you think you look and feel good and if that's not the same one you remember from the day you got into your prom dress/tux then so be it. I'm currently within a handful of pounds of what I'd consider my ideal but at the same time am some 25-30 pounds heavier than when I left HS; I can't, shouldn't, and wouldn't want to get down to that weight. I also don't own or consult a scale because it can't really tell me something I haven't already figured out for myself based on how my pants fit.

The BMI is a broad mark that's going to vary for different people. Obviously not everyone who's the same height is supposed to be the same weight.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

well true, but It's not like I feel badly now. a bit uncomfortable at times, particularly when it's hot and humid. When I stand for a long time (this was always true, so hard to say that's weight related, though it can't help)

I'm sure if I lose 25 pounds to 225ish, I'll be feeling great. But I'd still be carrying too much weight than is healthy. I'm hoping if/when I eventually get the ball actually rolling on serious weight loss that I'd be able to maintain it, but I wouldn't want to prematurely reach my goal either.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

when i left high school, i probably weighed about 150 lbs. maybe less. after 4 years of college, i weighed 175, lean and mean. at the end of my 5th year, i was 185, and it was almost all muscle. i've been within 5 lbs of 200 pretty much since i got back from my honeymoon almost 9 years ago. ideally, i'd want to be at 190, as i think to get there would require me to make the right kinds of decisions that would also yield phenomenal 5k times. but my willpower is lacking. and maintaining a not-unhealthy weight is just so easy.

bmi says i should be at 189 or lower. there's no way that's the upper limit of "right" for my body composition. jeez, especially if i were to start back with the weight training like i want to.

Not the loss that I wanted. But considering the food challenges I had this month, I'm grateful to still be within two pounds of goal weight.

It worked for Wifey Bucket (and you), and while I'm still hobbled by the achilles and not getting the exercise I should I had to do something.

5 days, 2 at or under points, 1 slightly over, 2 way over. But will give it a few weeks at least.

Guys lose weight in a blink - I'm sure you'll do great.

I think the biggest thing about WW is that it makes you more conscious of what you eat. Is that creamy soup REALLY worth that many points? Do I really want to use up all of those calories on fries?

It's not that you'll never have the occasional splurge, but the stuff that you occasionally splurge on will be the stuff you were eating right and left without thinking.

I also recommend using the food diary, because it forces you to cut down on grazing. When you know that you're going to have to write it down or enter it online, it makes you think twice about whether you really want that snack (sometimes you will, but at least you'll be sure of it before you eat it).

tell my body that.

too many of these guys.

Actually, I was somehow losing weight in June, barring a huge jump this weekend.

I think I need to be better about preplanning dinner/lunch. the more lower-cal options I have planned the better usually.

I also should get back to my "I can only have a beer on days I've worked out" plan.

Preplanning helps. A lot.

When I'm going out to a restaurant, I usually study the menu online in advance. It's not that I never change my mind, but having a game plan makes it easier to make better choices.

249. lowest point this year. Although tied with February, although I think it was a false low, this time I was 249 last Wednesday and 248 a week ago today.

My goal is 11 work outs this month. That's how many I got last month. I'd like to be at 239 by 9/13.

Care to enlighten us?
I don't think I've seen a 'Rolling Stone' mag in ten years.

Does it go too far? Well it's not the first time that they pimped out a barely legal teen whose music they had no interest in.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

I was at 184.8 this morning, that's about 7.5 pounds down from when I started with the Weight Watchers thing a month ago, but still at the low end of the range I'd been in for years (my range now appears to have dropped by about 5 pounds top and bottom).

Haven't seen the 170s yet but also not the 190s since week 2. My afternoon of drinking beer with a Boy Named Seo and his gorgeous Sheila (I recommend it) turned into a stumbling block when on the way home I stumbled into my fave restaurant and ordered everything I ever wanted but on the whole it's not been bad. Been eating a ton of fruit and veggies, cut back big on beer. Also cycling more and doing pushups again, so I think the loss has been better shape wise than number wise so far.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

I'm 93kg. When I came back from 'Nam I was 89kg, but then went on a stacked creatine cycle.

Ever since I started the 5/3/1 program 4 months ago my lifting has increased by about 20%

My current lifting stats for reps in lbs are: 240/295/155/-- (Bench/Deadlift/Military/Squats). I don't do squats because it's superfluous with all the cycling I do.

If anybody's interested in putting on some muscle, I cannot recommend the 5/3/1 program highly enough. If you're disinclined to buy Jim Welder's book I can pm it on request or you can use this website to devise a program for yourself.

yeah, I should've put up full year tallys and then make a new chart for new month since this one's gonna scroll off. and 'award' biggest Victorino prizes?

also perhaps this should be the Biggest Hamels Contest, since no one cares about the Dodgers.

Yes. Definitely yes.

I have Wendler's book and, since I'm on the same side of the world as most CPFers, I can just give it to anyone who is interested. But Spitter's link tells you all you need to know. The program is simple, which is the beauty of it. Do the Four Big Lifts that Spitter mentions above, and do something fairly intense and non-weight lifting related twice a week (Wendler recommends hill sprints; I started joining my gf in kickboxing class instead). That's it. That's all. The rest of Wendler's short book is a well-written pep talk.

The only qualification I would add is that some of Wendler’s nutritional information is bupkis – lots of “broscience” and stuff more appropriate for people using juice. But this doesn't detract from his lifting program.

No, that award is already reserved for the biggest cunt on CPF (which is not to imply there are cunts on CPF, per se).

Okay here's the deal. My husband's accupuncturist (sp?) gave him a diet last fall that WORKED. Broiled chicken and fish, rice or quinoa or other grains, green veggies, no alcohol. We did it from early November to the holidays and both lost lots of weight and felt good.

Enter New Years.

I have been begging him to get back on it again. We had to wait til after this weekend because we were to a 50th birthday party Saturday night (meatballs! kraut dogs! chips and dip!) and a good old fashioned Italian baptism reception yesterday (spaghetti and meatballs! homemade garlic bread!).

So I just weighed myself on the 24th with all good hopes that by next Monday, the 1st, I will weigh less.

today: 145 lbs

This is a good time of the year to start a plan. When you're in a groove going into the holiday season, it keeps the holidays from becoming holiweeks. Good luck, my friend!

Whenever you're sticking to broiled foods and cutting back on fried foods and fats you're going to see results (and feel a lot better to boot!).

Portion control is a big help. Having a taste of something with an intense flavor can be very satisfying :)

One thing I remember hearing a million years ago was the concept, "How do thin people eat?" You generally don't see thin people gorging themselves. I find that to be helpful when I'm reminding myself not to dive in and gorge on treats.

I haven't weighted in yet (still don't own a scale) but back to the gym hopefully tomorrow. Did delicious food and beer win out over crazy amount of walking and climbing around Europe? Will my blisters be healed enough to run tomorrow, or will it be solely weight training? These are the Days of Our Lives..or something like that.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

Okay, the biggest loser for everyone that weighted in on 8/1/11 and 8/1/12 was JCL with just shy of 10lbs down. Let's actually assign prizes to make it a 'real' competition. For the rest of the year (so the 1/1 weigh in)

Three categories

1. Biggest Victorino: Winner of this gets to rename the contest since Victorino is no longer a Philly.
2. Closest to goal weight:
3. Biggest gain:

I don't really know what to make for prizes for the other two. If we don't think of anything, I'll photoshop a silly Mets wallpaper or something.

Not the right direction. But considering what I ate for Thanksgiving and during the Hope Shines for Shannon fundraiser on Thursday night, I'll take it. .4 of a pound above goal weight; I'll need to keep an eye on things during the holiday season.

Starting the year at 124.8.

I'll settle for the fact that it's better than last January's 125.6, and that I notched 46 consecutive months of being within two pounds of goal weight.

I may not be losing, but at least I'm holding steady.

Goal weight: 89kg

Sometimes I buy junk food from those vending machines where a corkscrew-type apparatus turns and pushes the food forward. As the apparatus pushes the food to the brink, and the tipping point is reached, and the food slowly tilts forward and begins plummeting downward face-first, I feel like I'm witnessing a suicide.

Then I start stuffing my fat face and realize the suicide is my own.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

I started back on counting points again last week after failing to make any progress on my own and also, um, gaining some weight during July. It's not like a big deal, about 5 pounds and I know why (rhymes with "Here and Fine"), but hoping this time to wrestle it into the 160s.

Oh, the vending machine absolutely sucks. I should tell ya, one HUGE change that allowed me to lose weight last year was just taking that thing out of the rotation completely. I did not use it for 10 months probably, but knew I'd be returning to a more serious diet once I "broke the seal" during some stressy workdays this spring.

Fman99
Aug 14 2013 10:57 AM
Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

I keep a number of healthier snacks at my desk and rotate out new ones every week or two. Usually some combination of sweet (graham crackers, raisins, granola) and salty (peanuts, pretzel bits, etc.) I also bring a bag lunch most work days (I go out to lunch with coworkers maybe once or twice a month, at most) and bring snacks every day as well.

Typical weekday lunch bag:

fresh fruit -- melon, grapes, oranges, apples, peaches/plums
Chobani
lunch - a sandwich (most days), a side salad (lettuce, onion and a number of ingredients I can take right out of the fridge -- green olives, pepponcini, chick peas, etc.) or a bag of baked chips, Teddy Grahams cookies
raisins
single serve applesauce
two sodas

I do almost no vending at all here at work. It takes me 10-15 minutes of prep the evening before (usually after dinner while I'm cleaning up in the kitchen) and a few minutes in the morning (I make the sandwich in the AM so the bread doesn't get soggy overnight).

Ceetar

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

no vending at this office, but this is never what gets me. People talk about how "cutting out soda" and "not snacking during the day" is roughly all it took. Never made a dent for me. One of the things I did years ago was to tell myself not to stuff my face just to stuff my face and if I'm going to snack make it high quality stuff at least. That keeps me away from random chocolate bar most days.

I do find myself committing other 'break the seal' trends though. recently started getting popcorn in Penn Station on my way home and now can't seem to stop. Every once in a while I cave for lunch and get Taco Bell or McDonalds or something and inevitably I have it another half dozen times over the next couple of weeks.

for me, the 'seal' is simply eating. Choosing meals that are strictly lesser portions because I'll pile all 5 pounds of potatoes onto my plate if I mash them all. (oh, and factor in the last couple of bites of the wife's dinner as well) I've drifted away from this because I don't know where to buy them on sale anymore, but I'd been sticking to a Lara Bar for breakfast and finding it keeps me more full until lunch than a bagel or cereal does at half the calories or less.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

Ceets, if you're really interested in losing the weight give Weight Watchers a try. It's like $50 for 3 months to use their tracker and phone app, it will take you a week or so to get anywhere near the daily budgeted points but within a month you will get the hang of it and be losing, especially if you can reduce the beer. That is the hard part for me.

Like Fman I brownbag it everyday. I encounter trouble when the schedule gets weird and I can't load up with 4 or 5 fruits to graze on all day.

nah. Not worth the money. I know what's good and bad and my problems are more related to following through with them. And i've discovered that the more I think about food (And counting points and looking up stuff and tracking it) the worse I do.

I know what I really need to do is map out meals days in advance. No thought, no cravings. "I'm having chicken cutlets for dinner and there's nothing to think about." Rarely seems to work that way. Maybe i'll be better after I move. I'm not so bad with snacking, and keeping the crappy options away from my desk helps. So does staying hydrated and/or more coffee.

I don't struggle so much at work/lunch anymore, I pick and choose the couple of healthy options and just do them regularly. Sucks that there is no microwave or heating device at this office though, so it's limiting my bring it in options. Finding Pret A Manger and even Chop'd have lowish calorie options though.

well, there's nothing wrong with a whore either.

My problem is I don't want to put in the effort of tracking my diets. I don't want to record every scrap and spend time trying to figure out exactly how to enter a bagel with cream cheese and was this pizza slice a little bigger than that one? Perhaps this leads to having to schedule out my meals, which is what helps me anyway.

I know my problem is more mental and I know I'm not going to alter my eating habits permanently. I've gained most of my weight in jumps, and I know that should I manage to get myself down to ~190 or something, I'm going to feel free to eat crap again, with the caveat of remaining vigilant so that a note a jump and address it.

I think I need a sport though. It won't be _everything_ but if I had someone to play racquetball with, or a basketball game, or something competitive and fun (running is not) it'd be great for me both physically and mentally. I should look into that. I need more friends.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

The thing with exercise is finding something you have a passion for. If you look forward to it all day it becomes a priority. If it's a "chore" or a "task" or something on your list of things you "have to do," it will be the first thing you bail on.

I love to run. The races are a part of it but just a part. I feel free and relaxed and happy when I run. I get to enjoy the outdoors and I set an example for my kids. It also gives me license to eat and drink much more than I otherwise could while maintaining my weight and health levels.

I've made many friends through running, but I had to run first and then make friends while out at these races. Instead of saying "I need some friends to exercise with," the thought should be "I need to sign up for something that looks like fun and see what kind of friends I might make in the process." If it's not running, find something else. Get your heart rate up. Shake the rust off. Test your boundaries, see what you're capable of and then push yourself farther than that.

Identify it. Fix it. Live it and embody it.

Then, preach it until you've annoyed 90% of the people you know (because the other 10% will be inspired by your transformation).

Ceetar - obviously you're an adult and will make your own choices in life. But I can tell you from experience that your strategy will become more and more difficult as you go forward, because as we age it becomes harder and harder to get rid of excess weight.

IMO, this is why Weight Watchers is superior to fad diets. Nothing is off limits, and you can have whatever kind of splurge you want, but it does teach you to eat in a healthier overall way.

But you have to be there mentally. As someone who has maintained my loss with Weight Watchers for 53 months, I know just how much of a mind game this is and how much work it involves. OTOH, I feel way better in my 50's than I ever did in my early 40's, and I wouldn't trade that for all the junk food in the world.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

Yeah. I'm sure Weight Watchers is one option. I know the paths to success, but I'm not quite able to make myself get down them too far. And then I get depressed when I get a couple weeks in with little success and that frustrates me, or I have an off couple of days for good reasons and it negates and minimal progress I've made. (I'm in that point now. Just the commute into the city seems to have helped, and I am/was down 10-15 pounds since April, but the last week or two, despite getting excited about maybe dipping below 240, it ballooned up again.)

Obviously this month is full of lots of moving stress and running around, so I know there will be quick-meal chinese food takeout and all that, although plenty of manual labor in packing, unpacking, lifting, etc. I have good intentions about trying to find something sporty/active to take part in once I get settled, although things like joining the Racquet Club are probably prohibitively expensive and there are roughly a billion other different things I want to do with my free time.

Yes, it's hard getting into the right frame of mind during a busy time. But even now, you can make mindful choices. Chinese restaurants have steamed items, and items without heavy sauces. Brown rice is filling, without the oil and extra calories of fried rice. You have options that will allow you to eat quickly and still eat well, but it requires planning and thought.

BTW, you guys may have heard this from me before - when I'm out traveling and in need of a quick meal, I love McDonald's. I walk into there and know I can get a grilled chicken salad and a fruit and yogurt parfait, which I find filling and satisfying.

There are good choices to be made; you just need to make them.

And WTG on the loss! 10-15 pounds is significant - keep up the good work!

It's not significant if the last 5 or so was water weight or temporary or whatever. we'll see. (And it certainly wasn't through good work, since I converted gym time into commuting time. and have been to the gym like twice since I started) I know it's all mental, and I struggle with it. I suspect the problems are deeper than simply food anyway, I don't necessarily "stress eat" but for instance lunch is the only time during my work day I'm not miserable, so of course I tend to gravitate towards things that make me happier,

but I've got a handle on some of it. Like the enjoyment of a sweet sugary soda after lunch. More coffee or just water and ignore that minor habit. (And try to remind myself that a can of soda is almost the same as a beer at night. That certainly helps.) It always seems like something sneaks in though. Popcorn for the commute home lately. I find I'm not good at half-measures either. Going out to a bar with friends for instance, maybe the half measure is "just have one", but I struggle with that. I'd have an easier time having none, but I usually choose to give in and just have what I want. Again, probably deeper than just food. Life's too short to not enjoy myself when I'm out with friends and live life to it's fullest. I know that's one major hurdle, but I haven't really figured out how to get over it happily yet.

The thing is, I don't want to make good choices. I get enjoyment out of Chicken Nuggets, and definitely when I'm out traveling i'm going to indulge in things that I enjoy.

Agreed on the Chinese thing though, I should be better when I'm lazy with at least picking healthier options, as long as I can find one I like. (And, of course, portion control, which is probably the bigger issue for me)

This is the biggest issue, IMO. Once you find something that you want more than you want the comfort foods, it will be easier.

A lot of times losing is easier if you have a buddy. I remember doing WW the first time with a bunch of school friends, and that made a huge difference. Would Mrs. Ceetar be interested in doing this with you? A lot of couples find that handling the food/exercise issues together is helpful. One of my neighbors recently lost 50 pounds while her husband lost 30. And it's a lot easier sticking to a plan if your spouse isn't consuming the stuff in front of you that you're really craving.

she's as bad as sticking to it as I am. (You women with your hormones. geeze! ;-) ) Instead of feeding off each other to keep on track, we tend to encourage each other's cheating. i would occasionally drag myself through kfc's drive thru and pick out their chicken strips and the potato wedges. those things are really quite delicious and enjoyable. problem is, they're also really heavy and hte strips are laden with oil and grease and leave you feeling really quite awful afterwards.

i've found that lately, when i go past there running a meaningless errand and hungry, if i think more of hte awful feeling afterwards, i'm far less likely to indulge in them in the first place.

now, portion control when eating out... on that, i've got nothing. my portion control at home is going downhill too. minimm is hte problem there. i used to just stop eating when i was full or mostly full, leaving behind enough food for lunchy leftovers. now, however, minimm likes to really drag out dinner, taking his sweet sweet time eating all his foot, and talking up a storm while doing so. and the whole while he's doing this, there's a plate full of really yummy food (of course it's yummy, i just made it, and it's always good food, too). i'm not strong enough to ignore it, and always end up taking an extra scoop or two.

then i end up with less to eat at lunch, and have to augment it with snacking of some sort. a vicious cycle.

I don't generally feel awful afterwards, so that won't work. And the flip side is, I feel pretty crappy after I have smoothies/fruit a lot. So now even though I contemplate a smoothie for dinner every once in a while, all I can think about is how miserable my stomach will be all night if I do. I'm not really sure what's with that. I think it might be an acid thing.

You don't want a smoothie for dinner. You need something more substantial.

This goes against conventional wisdom, but I usually have a small snack around 10:00 pm. I find that knowing I'm going to have something at that hour keeps me from snacking earlier in the evening.

nah, why do I need something substantial? I usually mix in a yogurt too, so a 20oz smoothie seems to be pretty good in that regard. It's a fair bit of fruit with some good juice and some yogurt. that's fairly substantial anyway. If I've been making it to the gym I'll mix in some protein powder too sometimes, though that gets too chalky for my wife so I have to make sure to pour hers first.

It's a meal. Your dinner should involve chewing.

I lost 25% of my body weight ten years ago and have kept it off (though I stopped exercising for a year and gained half of the weight back, and then rejoined the gym and shook off that 25 lbs. a second time).

I feel like I can speak from experience. I'm not saying what worked for me will work for you. I think there are underlying reasons why you eat what you eat, and how you justify it to yourself.

Your mileage may vary.

When I was at my heaviest, my wife and I ate fast food 2-3 times per week and I did not cook much. Much of what I did cook was not particularly healthy. Lots of pasta and carbs (I am a carb junkie). I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, I drank many sodas per day and I never ever exercised. The lunches I packed to bring to work or buy while at work were not healthy (salami and provolone, BK drive through, etc.). I had no healthy routine.

Then, one day, in October of 2001, I had an epiphany. I was outside smoking on the first really cold windy day of the season and I decided I had had enough. I didn't want to face another year of standing outside freezing my ass off just to smoke. I called my physician and made an appointment to get Wellbutrin, an antidepressant that a couple of my friends had used to kick the habit. When I went to see my doctor, I tipped in at 202 lbs (I am 5'10").

I had graduated high school at 135 lbs. and college at 150, and somehow in the six subsequent years I had packed on another 50+.

First things first, I had to quit smoking, which I did. And lo and behold, after a few weeks of coughing up gunk in the shower, I felt like I had my breath again. I joined a gym and went for 60 minutes a day, five days a week. Thirty minutes of easy weightlifting using the Nautilus-style machines (no freeweights) and 30 minutes of cardio. And in 11 months, I lost 50 lbs. Slowly andd steadily, 1-2 lbs per week. My consistent target weight was and is 150 lbs,. which was the weight I hit in September of 2002.

I weigh 155 lbs. today.

Now, how did I lose the weight? Well, first, all of that time at the gym helped.

I had to also revise the way I ate. We had gotten an indoor grill as a wedding present (that previous May) and I started using it to cook more during the week. We tried to limit ourselves to one night out per week for dinner. I bought leaner meats but only for some meals -- I switched to 90% lean beef burgers, but kept the Italian sausages with pork (the turkey ones didn't cut it). Grilled and marinated chicken breasts. Kept a number of different frozen veggies ready to go for sides -- ones the wife and I both enjoy. Broccoli/cauliflower, peas, corn, etc.

I didn't change my breakfast routine -- a bowl of cold cereal and coffee.

My lunch routine cleaned up -- turkey and lean ham sandwiches. Sides of baked chips. Teddy grahams (lower in fat) as a dessert. More fruit. Gradually I weaned myself off of the processed stuff (granola and fruit bars) towards actual foods (fresh fruit, yogurt, etc.)

Ditched all of the regular sodas for diet versions. Same thing with mayo. Artificial sweetner in coffee instead of sugar. Some people insist that they CANNOT give up their regular mayo or ice cream or soda for diet versions. Those people, most often, are also too heavy.

I snack all day. I don't ever go more than 60-90 mintues without eating something. I drink lots of water and diet sodas and fill up on beverages without calories.

When I wanted fast food (then and now) I went to Subway and got a lean 6" sub and bag of baked chips. It worked for me.

Now, I will admit I had it easy in one regards. My wife is not only affected by Celiac but she is also a particular eater. And I do all of the cooking in our house when it comes to dinners. So she was willing to go along with this as most of my changes did not affect her anyway. She has her ice cream in the evenings and I am not tempted by it.

Nowadays, I run instead of going to the gym. I have balanace. When we get Chinese take out I tend to go with the steamed dumplings, which are tasty enough for me to not mind the lack of fried crispiness. Most fast food these days makes me ill -- I cannot look at it or stomach it. I do still get a Subway sub from time to time. I take the kids to Wegmans for dinner and they fill up on pizza and baked mac and cheese at the buffet and I get a wrap or sushi.

And I treat myself and I eat what I want. I just happen to want healthier, less fatty/oily snacks most of the time.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

So, to simplify/sum up:

Eat breakfast.

Exercise. Find an activity you look forward to.

Pick healthier snacks.

Pack a lunch. Plan ahead.

Cook dinner.

Find healthier alternatives that still satisfy your cravings.

Try to find a rhythm that is steady. Losing 8 lbs per week works on "The Biggest Loser," but it's not realistic if you also have a job, a commute, etc.

Think enough of yourself to invest the time to fix it, if you feel like it's broken.

i think part of the problem could be that, intuitively you know that you don't have a real, satisfying dinner waiting for you at the end of the day, and so you pack away the extra calories everywhere you can find them.

Re: CPF Biggest Victorino Contest

I get the idea that you might tend towards mistreating other meals if you are doing something like smoothies for a meal, but as long as you're planning your meals anyway, that shouldn't really be a problem. (much like the "don't skip breakfast" thing.)

I guess I just haven't really had my epiphany moment where losing weight becomes more important than everything else. I'm too heavy now, but it's not like I'm out of shape and wheezing or it really inhibits me in anyway besides maybe making me more sweaty and uncomfortable on hot summer days than I'd be already.

244.5 on the scale last night and this morning. I dipped a little further to around 243-244 about three weeks ago and haven't been as vigilant. But if I can be sloppy for three weeks but still responsible and active enough not to gain, and I can then switch to a responsible month where I actually lose a little, I can tolerate weight loss by staggered steps.

Anyway, thanks for the helpful hints/discussion. More knowledge is power or some such.

It's amazing how the whole process takes on a momentum of its own-- once you get used to the routines, and eating-habit revisions, they almost maintain themselves. I'll enjoy a burger or some holiday prime rib or a couple of Rusty Nails every now and again, but, frankly, the way I feel afterward-- GI-wise, energy-wise-- is a nice reminder of why I don't do that regularly, and that feeling steers me back to the home gym/healthier choices.

I've had the same experience... I counted calories in a little notebook for 3-4 months, until I felt like I had a routine developed, then I stopped doing it because I didn't feel it was necessary any more.

The fast food I thrived on for much of my 20's I can no longer stomach. Certain pizza places, too, it seems to be dependent on how much grease is in these foods. My coworkers are on a 'breakfast pizza' kick recently and while those taste good, I felt nasty the one time I ate a slice of it.

Additionally, when family/friends/circumstances have dragged me to a fast-food/fast-casual joint, I've been increasingly reliant on those calorie listing things that NYC requires at chain restaurants. (Thanks, Daddy Bloomberg!)
