You're casting for a movie, and the NFL is under a work stoppage and every player from every era is being made available for acting duty.

Now, you want somebody experienced. But we're trying to skew a little bit away from guys who only appeared once or twice as themselves or as slim variations of themselves in football-themed movies. No Ed O'Neills or Lee Majors guys who played college ball or barely got out of NFL camp or played three games with the USFL. Nor do we want sucky players who became wrestlers and then actors.

And we're not looking for quarterback-types here. Your script says "goon." And it's a goon we want. Who do you call? (I'll give you three picks to call in to your audition, then we'll have goon-off vote.)

1) Lyle Alzado, as seen in The Destroyer, et al.

2) Brian Bosworth, as seen in Stone Cold, et al.

3) Jim Brown, as seen in Slaughter, et al.

4) Dick Butkus, as seen (here with Bubba Smith) in , et al.

5) Fred Dryer, as seen in Hunter, et al.

6) Rosie Grier, as seen in The Thing with Two Heads, et al.

7) Alex Karras as seen in Blazing Saddles, et al.

8) Howie Long, as seen in Firestorm, et al.

9) Joe Klecko, as seen in Cannonball Run, et al.

10) John Matuszak as seen (sorta) in The Goonies, et al.

11) Merlin Olsen, as seen in Little House on the Prairie, et al.

12) Bill Romanowski, as seen in Get Smart, et al.

13) OJ Simpson, as seen in Airplane!, et al.

14) Bubba Smith, as seen in Police Academy, et al.

15) Lawrence Taylor, as seen Any Given Sunday, et al.

Re: So, you need a heavy...

I voted Alzado, Romanowski and Taylor.
They were really goons. Other than OJ, the other guys had a public personna as nice guys.
OJ is in a different caregory, but I'm not sure "goon" describes it.

And yet, he's got a vote!

By the criteria I laid out, LT barely qualifies, and arguably doesn't.

Re: So, you need a heavy...

Well, he probably did as much roids as the half of these guys combined.

Re: So, you need a heavy...

If it's a TOUGH GUY, it's Jim Brown, all day and every day.

As far as goons go, I'd go with a squad of Tooz (nice mad-dog beard), Bubba Smith (for size/sheer "wall"ness), and wild-card Lyle Alzado (for the crazy eyes).

I would probably not pick up the phone if OJ called back after auditions.

Re: So, you need a heavy...

Well, it's your movie (though Burt Reynolds is bankrolling it). It can be a good-guy goon or a bad-guy goon. Its just clear in your script that you need somebody who eats chains and shits nails and isn't afraid of nobody.

And maybe, when he gets out of the car, everybody gets real quiet.

Jim Brown vs. Tooz, Smith, and Alzado, then.

There's something really nasty about Dryer, though. Underneath all that LA-slickness and hip-for-about-20-seconds clothing, there's a real spooky sexual menace in his swagger.

Yeah, and he does needlepoint. But he kicked Sirhan Sirhan's ass, and he'll kick yours, too. Rosey Grier - the ultimate good guy goon.

Re: So, you need a heavy...

Anyone on that list who is NOT:
- dead before their time?
- connected to performance enhancing drugs?
- other illegal drugs or off the field crimes of violence?
- or some combination of several of the above?

It depends on whether we distinguish publickly known malodorous behavior from good suspects, but my guess is Rosie has the best chance of being clean.

Oh, yeah. Dryer's my big bad, maybe as Brown's ex-partner who sells him out.

Get me Towne! I need a script!

I like that I find two photos of Klecko from two different movies, but in both them he plays "Guy looking out the window of truck cab, wearing a hat."

Jim Brown was the baddest dude on this list. He still scares me.
