Sort of Jock You Probably Used to Know

Dave McKenna, the DC-based sportswriter mostly famous for being sued by Dan Snyder, is a personal favorite of mine, collecting stories from the deepest amateur ranks to the pinnacle of sports power --- Dan Snyder, for instance --- and digging into the into the deeper meaning sports have in society. The stories in his column, "The Cheap Seats, criss-cross his obstensibly athletic subject matter through the societal spectrum, allowing engrossing tales of sports to meaningfully reference jazz, politics, Alex Chilton, civil rights, faith, and other important societal touchstones. I love him.

Last week he gave the column over to a remembrance of an obscure local tennis figure/chronic bullshitter. If you don't know, love, and sometimes hate a guy just like this, you'll feel like you knew the original by the end of the article.

Another mind-blowing Dave McKenna column from 10 years ago.

Results in a tribute song, seemingly written in 30 minutes, I acknowledge, after the songwriter read that column, but it does what it needs to do, and that's to keep an amazing legend alive. Written by Phillie folksinger Erik Balkey, sung by Maine folksinger Jud Caswell, relaeased by DC's Jeff Campbell, a good guy I met at SABR, who releases baseball records to fund his non-profit, which gets musical instruments into the hands of poor children.

Really great , I am trying to subscribe to his blog through Google Reader but apparently I can only do it if I subscribe to the whole "Washington City Paper" City Desk section, frustrating.

Great story, again. I don't think I've ever read anything I didn't at least REALLY like from McKenna.
