IGT - Braves @ Mets -- Fri Aug 26

I/we are on a one-game winning streak so it's clear there's no stopping this momentum.
Well, OK, maybe Tim Hudson can stop it seeing as how he's 8-1 w/a sub-2.00 ERA over his last 12 starts including holding us to one 1st-inning run over 8 innings the last time we faced him ... but hey, that was three weeks ago, practically another lifetime.
He faces Chris Capuano who is ... ummm, fresh off a pinch-running appearance.

It's the calm before the storm game - and one in which viewers can count the number of times Keith makes some sort of comment about how Irene is going to affect his cross-LI driving and/or patio furniture.

And now the obligatory post where we say that broken bat hit is all your fault.

Capuano gets through the 6th clean: second rarest pitching feat to the Met no-hitter.

Nice two-out hits before that in bottom 5.
I'd hate to have our current 12-1 base-runner advantage and not have at least a small lead.

Nuthin' else to say but, WOW!
The kind of game where you figure your PotG voting by asking; 'OK, who gets the other 4 points?'

And except for Pagan running to 2nd when he shouldn't have, or Pagan forgetting the number of outs at one point (not a factor as it turned out) it was virtually a perfect game all around. Couple of two-out hits, two nice plays by Turner, and a whole lotta Cappy.

Good to know Capuano can do more than pinch run.

Howie seemed to think that Pagan's attempt to get to second was the right move - it was just luck and perfect Brave execution after the wild throw that got him.

Capuano's Game Score of 96 -- taking into account hits, walks, strikeouts, runs -- best of any Met since David Cone's 19 K slinkoff to end season in 1991, and tied for third-best ever in Mets history. Cone's was 99, Seaver's 1970 1-hitter vs Phil was 97 and Cap is tied with Qualls Game and an overpowering Dick Selma shutout from 1965 for third.

Re: IGT - Braves @ Mets -- Fri Aug 26

Best game of the year? I say yes. Big tip of the hat to Capuano for a great performance. I was sure that the Uggla hit would trigger the usual 4-run inning but he got through it. Golden sombrero for Bourn was nice. Only thing that I was disappointed about was that they didn't show the post-game interview with Kevin on the Jumbotron.

Angel forgetting how many outs there were was really ridiculous. If we weren't so short on capable players, I'd bench him for a game as penalty.

Yeah, it wasn't horrible - I was just looking for nits to pick on an otherwise near-perfect night. Only problem was that he never looked to see if the play was being backed up. It was, plus the Braves got a good bounce making the play not all that close. He also could have used a more aggressive slide.
The worse play was him not running on a 2-out fly ball although that one mattered less.

Nats just lost on a walk-off 2B

MFY's crying over Irene forcing Orioles to reschedule inconveniently for them. Boo-hoo, no off day.

How about they take off the last 28 days of October?

Caught a portion (but not all) of the O's announcers (Gary Thorn) talking about this story.
The Bal'mer angle on this is that the Yanx apparently cooked up the scenario they wanted to see happen and submitted the plan to whoever decides these things without ever consulting the home-team Orioles on the matter and then got all mad when it didn't automatically happen.

Needless to say, Buck Showalter is only too happy to pull for whatever option says the biggest 'FU' to the Yanx.

Capuano's game score of 96 is the best in the majors this year.

The Ervin Santana no-hitter was a 94; Verlander also had a 94 (and a 90 for his no-hitter).

I'm too lazy to look this up but his last start had to have resulted in his worst game score of the year.

Re: IGT - Braves @ Mets -- Fri Aug 26

Actually, only his fourth worst (a 39).

The bad ones:
April 14 in Colorado (gives up seven runs in 5.2) - 28
April 28 at Washington (4 runs on 10 hits in 5.2) - 35
June 1 vs. Pittsburgh (fails to retire first 5 batters in the 7th, they all score) - 37

Thought that struck me as Caps struck out Braves was, "Bet we could get a pretty good prospect for this guy by Wednesday." I hope scouts from contending teams waited the full nine before beating it out of town.

I thought this too, actually. He'd make a nice deadline deal for some hot shit prospect... and the Mets have enough kids in AA/AAA to fill rotation spots for September.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_score

Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score:

Start with 50 points.
Add 1 point for each out recorded, so 3 points for every complete inning pitched.
Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th.
Add 1 point for each strikeout.
Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed.
Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed.
Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed.
Subtract 1 point for each walk.

Highest Achieved Scores
Kerry Wood

The highest game score for a nine inning game in the history of baseball was Kerry Wood's one-hit, no walk, 20-strikeout shutout performance for the Chicago Cubs against the Houston Astros on May 6, 1998. His game score was 105 (50 + 27 + 10 + 20 – 2).

Higher scores have been accomplished in extra-inning games. Harvey Haddix scored a 107 for the game in which he took a perfect game into the 13th inning. Juan Marichal and Warren Spahn scored 112 and 97, respectively, during a complete game 16-inning match up. In their famous 26-inning duel from 1920, Joe Oeschger scored 149 and Leon Cadore scored 141.

The lowest game score in baseball history was Allan Travers' 26-hit, 24-run start for the Detroit Tigers on May 18, 1912. His game score was a negative: -52. This performance only came about because the regular Tiger players staged a strike in protest of Ty Cobb's suspension. To avoid a forfeit, local college players (including Travers) were enlisted as impromptu fill-ins. The lowest game score since 1957 was Oakland pitcher Mike Oquist's, who allowed 16 hits and 14 earned runs in 5 innings on August 3, 1998, for a negative score: -21.

The game score concept expands on Major League Baseball's official definition of a quality start. MLB defines a quality start as 6 or more innings pitched while allowing 3 or fewer earned runs. The game score system defines a quality start as a game score above 50.

The advantage that the system has over the official definition is that it allows a statistician a better view of the degree of quality in a pitcher's performance. Game scores can be quantified, and a pitcher's performance tracked over time. It is also possible to compare different pitchers. If one averages a 60 and another averages 55, presumably the first pitcher has had a better season.

It is also possible to have a quality start under the game score system that would not qualify officially.

It must be noted that in terms of high scores, the system favors current pitchers. It is difficult to achieve a very high score in a game without amassing a substantial number of strikeouts. In earlier eras, even for the very best pitchers, strikeouts were less plentiful. For instance, Cy Young's two no-hitters earned scores of just 90 and 88 due to their low strikeout totals (3 and 2, respectively).
