The Astros have guaranteed themselves first pick in the 2012 draft. They've picked first twice before and went for Floyd Bannister (in 1976) and Phil Nevin (in 1992). Perfectly good careers for both of them, but five picks behind Nevin was Derek Jeter, so Houston fans have had to go to bed for 16 years wondering why they don't have the dreamiest team ever.

HoF pitcher for Detroit Hal Newhouser was Houston's Michigan area scout at that time and *thought* he had the Astros convinced that Jeter should be the #1 overall pick.
But at the last minute they switched to Nevin, supposedly for the more 'sure' projection a college player would provide. Newhouser quit over the snub.
