...claimed by the Rockies and then pulled back by the Mets.

So reports WFAN.

My question.....um, why?

Why not? Your simply toggling the "Tradeable" switch on a player, with no downside. Something like 85% of players are put on waivers in August.

Re: Wright Placed on Waivers....

But is that it?

Just to see what they might possibly be able to get for him should they decide to trade him now as opposed to next year when he's in the last year of his deal and maybe they wouldn't get as much?

Does this bode well for the re-signing of Reyes?

Re: Wright Placed on Waivers....

I don't think it bodes either way for anything.
As mentioned, most of the league is placed on waivers based on the thinking that either the claiming club is in such a state of desperation that they'll offer you a deal too good to turn down (did you say you'd include your top six prospects or your top seven?), or that the sheer volume of players floating out there maybe disguises the handful of guys you really want to slide through.
The age of computer data-bases and multiple asst GMs probably killed that second reason a while back but that was traditionally part of the thinking and old habits die slowly in the baseball world.

In his pomp? I guess you're better at keeping track of Mike Piazza's hairdos than I am.

It depends on the circumstance.

I believe that's been the traditional reason for doing so, yes.

Heyman on Twitter claims no team claimed Wright.

Re: Wright Placed on Waivers....

Well that sounds stupid. Why wouldn't a team claim him?

Re: Wright Placed on Waivers....

Ah, Heyman's a dick. He just wants to be able to say this offseason something like "The Mets can't expect too much from David Wright. Every team in baseball had a chance to claim him last year, and nobody did."

- because they realize he'll just be pulled back
- and because a lot of GMs go by the unwritten 'don't block (claim) my guys and I won't block yours' agreement

Because everyone knows the Mets aren't going to trade him. And they aren't going to give up prospects. And any team that needs a bat probably also has a 3B and doesn't want that issue for next year. And no one's worried about someone else claiming Wright and feels the need to block him from going to another team.

Re: Wright Placed on Waivers....

Then there was the time in 1999 when Harold Baines got through waivers unclaimed and was subsequently dealt from Baltimore to the Indians in late August.
When Steinbrenner found out that a possible post-season rival had gotten a player because the Yanx failed to put in a claim he blew a fuse and declared it would never happen again. So Cashman had to toss aside that gentleman's agreement about not putting in claims unless you were truly interested in the player, a move which pissed off a lot of his fellow GMs but they didn't have to deal with the wrath of George.

Anyway, that's how the Yanquis wound up with Jose Canseco in 2000. They (not surprisingly) put in the only claim when the fading Jose's name was floated at which point Tampa couldn't say, 'Here, he's yours, contract and all', quickly enough. So the Yanx wound paying some $4mil bucks for 100 or so ABs from a player they had absolutely no interest in acquiring.
