Good night Irene

Currently slamming the Bahamas, she's expected at the Outer Banks by Saturday, the mid-Atlantic by Sunday, and it's looking increasingly like at last some parts of the NYC region and even New England is going to get a rare direct hit of maybe a Cat 2 by that point.

Re: Good night Irene

It'll be interesting. I might recommend not planning to go to the game Sunday. Wonder if they should try to preemptively play two Saturday.

I'm worried about my in-laws basement. during the last rain storm it was already coming up through the cracks in the floor (I'm sure the Earthquake helped with that..) and a hurricane will be so much worse. This wouldn't be that bit a deal if my father in law (he's 74 with bad knees) wouldn't insist on spending all day wet-vac ing the flood.

Looks like the NY area could get the brunt of the storm.
Make sure you have enough water, candles, batteries, canned food and portable radio. (beer optional) Have bags of ice that you could move from the freezer to the refrigerator if the power goes out. And, if you live near the coast, make sure you have gas in your car in case you have to leave quickly.

Not looking forward to it.

These predicted high winds always play havoc in my town and 50% of the time a big tree comes down in my yard and takes out power lines.

Oh, joy.

Really interfering with our vacay on the Del. shore. We're supposed to be camping there beginning Sunday, but Sunday a.m. is when the shit's supposed to hit there. Meantime, if we wait till the storm ends there we'll get killed on the drive down, so thinking about leaving Saturday and holing up in a hotel in Dover or something.

I had it that way first. Then I realized if you had to drive in the storm, it would be better to do it sober. Beer would be the option if you could remain at home.
But I appreciate your trying to bring some humor to what could be a nasty situation.

I remember getting pounded by Hurricane Gloria back in 1985, when I still lived on Long Island. We were without power for something like five days. I remember my grandmother got power back before we did, and my sister and I moved in with her for a few days. I was watching from my grandmother's house when Darryl Strawberry hit that home run off the clock in St. Louis. (I'm glad that game was on Channel 9 and not Sportschannel.)

It's times like this when I'm glad I now live a lot further inland. We may still get some very nasty weather here, but it won't be the full fury of the storm.

The Mets won the World Series the next year. just saying.

oooh, there was also an earthquake in October of that year. 4.0 in Ardsley NY, felt in NYC.

I was three. I went outside during the eye of the storm and walked to the corner (one house over) while eating cheerios out of a little plastic cup with a red sliding lid.

At least with something like the Weather Channel you expect them to go ape-shit over this stuff because it's their sole reason for existence.
It's the local stations that are the worst. Their basic message is to over-play any unusual snow/rain/heat/cold situation so they can say: STAY TUNED TO THIS STATION OR YOU'LL DIE!!!!

What I love are the weather guys standing on the beach and coming within inches of being blown away.

One day someone is going to get seriously injured on one of these useless live remotes, and perhaps the stations will rethink the whole thing.

I missed Gloria - I was living in Boston at the time. By the time the storm made it up there, it had pretty much petered out. Some parts of the area lost power, but we were fine - I specifically remember going out to the movies that night after the storm had passed.

My parents were still in Dix Hills at the time, though, and I know they lost power for a while.

Re: Good night Irene

Fwife and I flew down to Florida the day a hurricane hit, Hurricane Jeanne in 2004. They were still reeling from the earlier Charley and Ivan both of which had punched Florida in the neck already that season.

I remember, my wife and I were considering bagging the flight and driving to Niagara Falls or something instead. We were going and staying with my father in law, who lives north east of Orlando and maybe 40 miles or so inland. He told us not to worry about it, come down and ride out the storm, so we did.

They closed the airport a few hours after we landed. We drove from the airport to the grocery store, where we bought milk, bread and a LOT of beer, and came back to my father in law's house to put his storm shutters on. Then he and I sat on their porch and watched it rain, drinking beers, for about 10 hours. The power went out, my wife was stuck talking to her perpetually depressed and bitter step mother (also named Jeanne, ironically), while I got lit up with her dad on the porch. His house is L-shaped, and the porch was inset in the L, so we were protected on three sides by the house and garage, and could just sit on the porch and watch it happen. It was like having a 25' large TV tuned in to the Weather Channel. The power went out but we had enough ice for the beer.

The step monster spent the whole time in the house, drinking Pepsi, eating baby cereal and shrimp cocktails with a shit-ton of cocktail sauce. She's an odd duck, let it be known. She talked my wife's ear off, I heard not a bit of it.

I drank till I was faced, and meandered off to the guest room to sleep it off. I told Fwife in my last barely conscious moments that her stepmother existed in a world filled with pain and cocktail sauce.

The entire rest of that week the whole state of Florida was deserted. This thing scared off the tourists, we had EPCOT, Cocoa Beach, Kennedy Space Center, basically to ourselves the whole week.

These periodic storms are a sober reminder of why the local NHL franchise is named the Hurricanes. Since moving to North Carolina in the fall of 1985 I have endured the increasingly more violent storms of Hurricane Gloria in 1985, Hurricane Hugo* in 1989, Hurricane Fran in 1996, and the devastating tag team tandem of Hurricanes Dennis/Floyd in 1999. I pray that Irene will not escalate the level of violent destruction.

I have a full tank on my generator, 7 gallons of gas, several gallons of water in the fridges, a well stocked pantry and bar, matches, candles, and an assortment of batteries. I'm about as ready as I can be for Irene's likely visit.

*I can't believe I initially forgot Hurricane Hugo, which cut a path of destruction as far inland as Charlotte. Hugo actually bypassed us for the most part and headed inland downing trees and power lines in it's wake. To add to the devastation, Hugo spawned multiple tornadoes as it traversed eastward across North and South Carolina.

Yup. I'm thinking that safest place in this area this weekend will be Manhattan. All the buildings can take 110 mph winds and turn them into strong breezes. Wish I could say the same about my neighbor's 50' pine trees that are about 40' from my house.

If your vacation site is anywhere near the coast line, you should probably check with them to be sure they are still open to tourists. Much of the North Carolina coastline has been evacuated. Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island are under a manditory evacuation order for all tourists and residents as has Dare County, NC. The Emerald Isles have been evacuated from Fort Macon above Atlantic Beach down through Hammock Beach State Park. Virtually all of the North Carolina coastline is closed to incoming traffic (particularly for non-residents) until after the storm passes through sometime late tomorrow afternoon/evening. If your destination is west of I-95 then you should be fine other than heavy rains and some wind gusts.

Best of luck and above all else, be safe.

This is fucking ominous. It was fucking ominous before Belle in '76 and before Gloria in '85 -- and I suppose before the various hurricanes that downgraded before reaching the Metropolitan Area and became little more than rainy, windy nuisances here on Long Island. This, though, is way more ominous.

I live a little more than a mile north of the mandatory evacuation line in Nassau County, which I take was chosen as an outer limit to be on the relatively safe side. Somebody hand Irene a road map so she knows to not cross Merrick Road...or Sunrise Highway at the very most.

I think the noon shut-off for all city mass-transit looks a bit overly-cautious considering that it probably won't even be raining at that point (or barely so) and that even the leading edge of the rough stuff will be a number of hours away (like maybe ten or twelve).
I know it's a Saturday but there are still going to be a number of people expected to work today and a lot of them depend on the system.

It's the barrier islands and peninsulas that have kept Long Island safe all these years. Far Rockaway, Broad Channel, Long Beach, Jones Beach, Fire Island --- property owners there are the ones who should be worried. Other than that, you'll see flooded basements in Bay Shore and Freeport, but the rest of youse Islanders, don't try to lift any trees off of downed wires and you'll be OK.

So say I, anyhow.

West of RVC, I assume. I'm on the other side, where Merrick is south of Sunrise. The county emergency map says they evacuate what they're evacuating in the event of a Category 4 storm, which this (blessedly) isn't. Better safe, et al.

Gauging by Saturday morning parking lot population at the Pathmark, less of a rush than there is for your typical blizzard. But this thing's been hyped for days.

It's the electricity and wind damage that's uppermost here (pointing to my mind, if I can find it). We live on the top floor of a co-op/converted school whose roof features cell phone towers that I sincerely hope are securely fastened. They've withstood everything for seven years. But they haven't encountered this.

We've had two weird power outages this summer, the second of them just the other day when a nearby utility pole took a dive, so at least LIPA has practice at responding (and responding well).

post-Katrina, all municipalities overreact, and the media has always sold fear for a living. Now THAT is a perfect storm... of pointless hysteria, that has made a fortune for bottled water and flashlight and battery manufacturers and distributors, in the face of a category 1 hurricane.

I'm sure there will be the typical coastal damage resulting from big storms, and my heart goes out to people living there, but its the inevitable downside of living on the coast, or on a fault-line, or on the side of a mountain. If you live on the side of an active volcano, you're a Pompeiian waiting to happen. Not that i believe for a second this is that scenario, but i'm just saying. The price you pay for oceanfront property isn't just in the purchase price.

As for our vacation, we were supposed to leave for Ocean City today, but obviously that's not happening. We're going to call the realtor Monday morning to see if the property is habitable (ie., has electricity and hasn't floated away), and then head down asap. luckily, our lease will be prorated, but it sucks to lose vacation time. Not as much as it will suck for those who may lose a HOUSE or suffer other significant property damage, so i have to keep it in perspective. Otherwise, i'll be like me 14-year old daughter whose only concern is that we may lose power tomorrow night and she won't be able to see the Video Music Awards.

Still, it sucks.

excerpt from God's Song by Randy Newman:

The Christians and the Jews were having a jamboree
The Buddhists and the Hindus joined on satellite TV
They picked their four greatest priests
And they began to speak
They said, "Lord, a plague is on the world
Lord, no man is free
The temples that we built to you
Have tumbled into the sea
Lord, if you won't take care of us
Won't you please, please let us be?"

And the Lord said
And the Lord said

I burn down your cities - how blind you must be
I take from you your children and you say how blessed are we
You all must be crazy to put your faith in me
That's why I love mankind
You really need me
That's why I love mankind

Due to potential flooding, they've got to relocate a LOT of trains and buses that are normally stored in low-lying areas (as opposed to just leaving them/digging them out after the fact). It makes the shutdown a lot more tedious, lengthy work than it would normally be.

The real shame is that any successful evacuation tends to produce more deaf ears for the next round; we're people, and the sad fact is that people are much more effectively motivated by fear and horror than by placidity.

post-Katrina, all municipalities overreact, and the media has always sold fear for a living. Now THAT is a perfect storm... of pointless hysteria, that has made a fortune for bottled water and flashlight and battery manufacturers and distributors, in the face of a category 1 hurricane.

A point to make, amidst the hysteria/decrying thereof: a slow Category 1/bad tropical storm in New York City-- presuming that's what we get-- is a MUCH bigger deal than a Cat 3-Cat 4 that slams, say, Miami. It's complicated... but, put briefly, NYC (transit system most definitely inclusive) is not equipped to handle large-scale, storm-surge-borne flooding. Even if immediate loss of life/limb is minimal, just a couple of inches of water in this burg in a short time mean hundreds of millions in economic impact... and significant public health impact, as well. Add tropical storm winds for up to 6-8 hours, and it's a dangerous cocktail. In short, measuring potential hurricane damage by Saffir-Simpson is like handing out MVPs based exclusively on batting average.

And really, for the people who are kvetching about overreaction: if more "realistic" preparation means a potential couple of hundred extra lives lost due to "sticking it out" shoreside, or electrified ponding throughout Lower Manhattan, or mid-to-long-term water system contamination... is it worth the savings?

Bloomberg still doesn't like taking questions.

Fascinating to watch elected officials who are always urging you to live or at least spend money in your jurisdictions applaud people for bolting it, as Markowitz and others did in the aftermath of the evacuations.

Much mess all around us but we came out OK thus far, residual winds (and whatever impact they might have on power) notwithstanding.

Re: Good night Irene

hey guys. We left yesterday for vacay (relocated to Harpers Ferry) after a panicy morning. Our concern was mainly the adequateness of the drainage at pur property for rain so I endured a surreal scene buying sandbags at a Chinese building supply joint under the BQE yesterday. These guys were loading hoppers witha front end loader, bagging sand and forklifting pallets to people as fast as they could sell it. Wound up with 10 bags that'll be stacked up at our front abd back doors all week.

Sounds like it will be a great victory for supermarkets and chinese building supply joints. The supers do even better when they get power outages: you panic buy, then all the stuff goes bad so you load up again.

I hope that all fared well in the storm and no one suffered too much property damage.

Shortly after my post early yesterday morning, our power went out again. We didn't regain power until around noon today. Some areas of town are still without power. I was able to fire up my generator to at least keep the refrigerators, the freezer, and lights running so it wasn't too bad. I spent roughly 6 hours today picking up tree limbs and debris.

Luckily, Irene turned out to be pretty overrated (at least in our area) and far less damaging than many storms of the past 20 years. Irene turned out to be little more than a nuisance (loss of electricity, cable, and internet for roughly 30 hours) to us. Unfortunately, many people along the coast weren't as fortunate. Still, when compared to Hugo, Fran, Isabel, and Floyd this storm caused far less damage and loss of life. I'm glad that Irene turned at to be less severe than initially feared.

I'd say that we were fortunate, but that would be a massive understatement.

The Milford coast got hammered - We never lost power, and the only damage I have is the assorted branches and leaves that I have to clean up in my yard.

My wife, walking the dog in some green space in Takoma Park, saw some kids gathered around something small. She went over and saw that it was a baby squirrel, not even really with it's eyes opened.

We have a wildlife rescue place in the MD suburbs we've taken birds who've fallen out of their nests, so she scooped up the varmint and drove up there. She got there and the place was teeming with rescued baby squirrels, knocked from their nests when their trees or branches were sent asunder by Irene, and then scooped up by the merciful and relocated to the wildlife sanctuary.

The staff was harried, taking in these foundlings and fielding calls from... people asking about baby squirrels. "No, ma'am, you should bring it to us, making a pet of it won't work."

"Do you get that question a lot?" my wife asked, after the staffer hung up.

He's been oddly quiet on facebook. (Though he's active on WWF.)

Re: Good night Irene

No damage and minimal leakage (though we did discover that our fuse box leaks water when it rains)

But the power went out Sunday at 7:15 and is still out. It was a small triumph when I discovered that a box of Klondike Bars in my freezer were still frozen. I brought them to work.

Still no power -- I'm in town at the bookstore with wifi. No loss of life, and the art work in the house is undamaged.

Thankful for your safety. Hope you get a generous settlement, and that the sculpture wasn't terribly damaged.

How's the Quarryman's Museum?

Re: Good night Irene

Ok, electricity back, internet back, after three days. No damage to Opus 40!or the museum, and, incredibly, no damage to the art inside the house. We lost 44 trees, and the roof of our house. Other damage to the house we'll have to wait the contractor's report, which we'll get tomorrow. But whole villages up here were swept away. The devastation was incredible.

Wow - incredible!

I'm glad that you fared as well as you did Mole. The house is replaceable - you're not!

Wondering why the NJ Transit trains aren't running yet?

About a mile down from the Boonton sign is the Reservoir Tavern and a mile more is Ashies hometown of Parsippany now fighting out of Atlantic City by way of Morristown lol.

Sorry to see and read of the destruction to your home, mole. I'm glad to hear that everyone escaped unharmed.

Re: Good night Irene

We are in Day 4 of no power and are being told that we may not be back up until Saturday.

We have the generator running basics - refrigerator, tv, hot water heater, etc. - but still, this is starting to get old fast.

Re: Good night Irene

Nope - no interwebs from home. I can acess it s l o w l y on my phone and iPad via 3G but that's kinda tedious.

The wife wants to start screaming at elected officials and I say more power to her, but personally I think that's just wasted breath.

My sister is still without power in Williamsburg, VA. I told her the city officials were taking the whole colonial thing a little too far.

Re: Good night Irene

Got home and the Mrs told me power was restored at 8:32PM (Eastern time).
It had gone out 7:15 AM on Sunday.
We took water in the family room and garage, trees down in back yard.
The neighbor across the street had a tree fall on part of his house and deck.
I have a lot of reading/ catching up to do.
Hope you are all well.
See you in other threads.

Re: Good night Irene

Finally finished cutting up the trees that fell in the back yard (large parts of the 50+ foot poplars we have on the border to our back yard).
One of these days I have to get a chain saw.
