Good night Irene
Frayed Knot Aug 24 2011 08:21 PM |
Currently slamming the Bahamas, she's expected at the Outer Banks by Saturday, the mid-Atlantic by Sunday, and it's looking increasingly like at last some parts of the NYC region and even New England is going to get a rare direct hit of maybe a Cat 2 by that point.

Ceetar Aug 24 2011 08:27 PM Re: Good night Irene |
It'll be interesting. I might recommend not planning to go to the game Sunday. Wonder if they should try to preemptively play two Saturday.

Really interfering with our vacay on the Del. shore. We're supposed to be camping there beginning Sunday, but Sunday a.m. is when the shit's supposed to hit there. Meantime, if we wait till the storm ends there we'll get killed on the drive down, so thinking about leaving Saturday and holing up in a hotel in Dover or something.

I had it that way first. Then I realized if you had to drive in the storm, it would be better to do it sober. Beer would be the option if you could remain at home. But I appreciate your trying to bring some humor to what could be a nasty situation. Later

The weather men and women love this shit, I expect to see Jim Cantore hanging from a pole in 110mph winds come Sunday doing a report. Watched two reporst last night back to back, first in The Weather Channel, they had it tracked as hitting Long Island as maybe a C2 and southern NY, "some of you in the North East can expect the worst weather you have ever experienced there".....Whoa there buddy relax for fucks sake.

I remember getting pounded by Hurricane Gloria back in 1985, when I still lived on Long Island. We were without power for something like five days. I remember my grandmother got power back before we did, and my sister and I moved in with her for a few days. I was watching from my grandmother's house when Darryl Strawberry hit that home run off the clock in St. Louis. (I'm glad that game was on Channel 9 and not Sportschannel.)

The Mets won the World Series the next year. just saying. oooh, there was also an earthquake in October of that year. 4.0 in Ardsley NY, felt in NYC. I was three. I went outside during the eye of the storm and walked to the corner (one house over) while eating cheerios out of a little plastic cup with a red sliding lid.

At least with something like the Weather Channel you expect them to go ape-shit over this stuff because it's their sole reason for existence. It's the local stations that are the worst. Their basic message is to over-play any unusual snow/rain/heat/cold situation so they can say: STAY TUNED TO THIS STATION OR YOU'LL DIE!!!!

What town did you live in? We were also in the path of the eye (in Smithtown). I remember we were listening to WBLI on the radio and they kept warning us not to go outside when the eye passed over us, because the storm could kick up again very suddenly.

I missed Gloria - I was living in Boston at the time. By the time the storm made it up there, it had pretty much petered out. Some parts of the area lost power, but we were fine - I specifically remember going out to the movies that night after the storm had passed.

These periodic storms are a sober reminder of why the local NHL franchise is named the Hurricanes. Since moving to North Carolina in the fall of 1985 I have endured the increasingly more violent storms of Hurricane Gloria in 1985, Hurricane Hugo* in 1989, Hurricane Fran in 1996, and the devastating tag team tandem of Hurricanes Dennis/Floyd in 1999. I pray that Irene will not escalate the level of violent destruction.

If your vacation site is anywhere near the coast line, you should probably check with them to be sure they are still open to tourists. Much of the North Carolina coastline has been evacuated. Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island are under a manditory evacuation order for all tourists and residents as has Dare County, NC. The Emerald Isles have been evacuated from Fort Macon above Atlantic Beach down through Hammock Beach State Park. Virtually all of the North Carolina coastline is closed to incoming traffic (particularly for non-residents) until after the storm passes through sometime late tomorrow afternoon/evening. If your destination is west of I-95 then you should be fine other than heavy rains and some wind gusts. Best of luck and above all else, be safe.

Rockin' Doc Aug 27 2011 04:56 AM Re: Good night Irene |
I awoke at 5:10 AM to the sound of wind rushing through the trees outside. At 5:35 AM the alarm system on the house beeped as the power went out and the battery back up system kicked in. I got up and with a battery powered lantern gave the house a brief, cursory run through. All seemed dry and well, though the cat seemed a little nervous and was rather clingy. I went back to bed, but could not sleep. So I laid there and listened to the howling wind and driving rain. At 6:25 AM there alarm system once again beeped, this time as the power kicked back on. The eye of the storm is just off shore near Atlantic Beach, NC and should make landfall within the next hour or so.

This is fucking ominous. It was fucking ominous before Belle in '76 and before Gloria in '85 -- and I suppose before the various hurricanes that downgraded before reaching the Metropolitan Area and became little more than rainy, windy nuisances here on Long Island. This, though, is way more ominous.

I think the noon shut-off for all city mass-transit looks a bit overly-cautious considering that it probably won't even be raining at that point (or barely so) and that even the leading edge of the rough stuff will be a number of hours away (like maybe ten or twelve).

Edgy DC Aug 27 2011 08:23 AM Re: Good night Irene |
It's the barrier islands and peninsulas that have kept Long Island safe all these years. Far Rockaway, Broad Channel, Long Beach, Jones Beach, Fire Island --- property owners there are the ones who should be worried. Other than that, you'll see flooded basements in Bay Shore and Freeport, but the rest of youse Islanders, don't try to lift any trees off of downed wires and you'll be OK.
|
G-Fafif Aug 27 2011 08:24 AM Re: Good night Irene |

West of RVC, I assume. I'm on the other side, where Merrick is south of Sunrise. The county emergency map says they evacuate what they're evacuating in the event of a Category 4 storm, which this (blessedly) isn't. Better safe, et al.

It's the electricity and wind damage that's uppermost here (pointing to my mind, if I can find it). We live on the top floor of a co-op/converted school whose roof features cell phone towers that I sincerely hope are securely fastened. They've withstood everything for seven years. But they haven't encountered this. We've had two weird power outages this summer, the second of them just the other day when a nearby utility pole took a dive, so at least LIPA has practice at responding (and responding well).

Due to potential flooding, they've got to relocate a LOT of trains and buses that are normally stored in low-lying areas (as opposed to just leaving them/digging them out after the fact). It makes the shutdown a lot more tedious, lengthy work than it would normally be.

The real shame is that any successful evacuation tends to produce more deaf ears for the next round; we're people, and the sad fact is that people are much more effectively motivated by fear and horror than by placidity.
A point to make, amidst the hysteria/decrying thereof: a slow Category 1/bad tropical storm in New York City-- presuming that's what we get-- is a MUCH bigger deal than a Cat 3-Cat 4 that slams, say, Miami. It's complicated... but, put briefly, NYC (transit system most definitely inclusive) is not equipped to handle large-scale, storm-surge-borne flooding. Even if immediate loss of life/limb is minimal, just a couple of inches of water in this burg in a short time mean hundreds of millions in economic impact... and significant public health impact, as well. Add tropical storm winds for up to 6-8 hours, and it's a dangerous cocktail. In short, measuring potential hurricane damage by Saffir-Simpson is like handing out MVPs based exclusively on batting average. And really, for the people who are kvetching about overreaction: if more "realistic" preparation means a potential couple of hundred extra lives lost due to "sticking it out" shoreside, or electrified ponding throughout Lower Manhattan, or mid-to-long-term water system contamination... is it worth the savings?
He really doesn't, does he?

hey guys. We left yesterday for vacay (relocated to Harpers Ferry) after a panicy morning. Our concern was mainly the adequateness of the drainage at pur property for rain so I endured a surreal scene buying sandbags at a Chinese building supply joint under the BQE yesterday. These guys were loading hoppers witha front end loader, bagging sand and forklifting pallets to people as fast as they could sell it. Wound up with 10 bags that'll be stacked up at our front abd back doors all week.

We had some water coming through the basesment window (the idiot contractor opened it during our basement work and never properly re-sealed it), but D-Dad fixed the problem, so we don't have flooding. We have power, water and FiOS.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Aug 28 2011 08:52 AM Re: Good night Irene |
Water-Power-Gas-FiOS. Check, check, check... and check. Minimal garage flooding.

Lots of sound and fury signifying nothing here on the tony North Shore of central Suffolk. One downed branch.

themetfairy Aug 28 2011 01:13 PM Re: Good night Irene |
I was taking pictures of some of the local street flooding when some teenagers decided to bike through the water -

If that's the only thing he has to complain about, things must be pretty good. We have some big branches in the backyard that will take some effort to dispose of, but otherwise we weathered it just fine.

metirish Aug 28 2011 01:50 PM Re: Good night Irene |
Local TV stations really milking this, still wall to wall coverage.

Fman99 Aug 28 2011 02:05 PM Re: Good night Irene |
Up here in the 'Cuse we just got a rainy, windy day. It did put a bit of a damper on the 5k race I ran this morning, got wet I did. On the other hand it made for some fine napping weather for Fgirl and I.

There are two power lines in my neighborhood. We have power, but our next door neighbors don't. PSE&G isn't promising them restoration until next Sunday!

Rockin' Doc Aug 28 2011 09:24 PM Re: Good night Irene |
I hope that all fared well in the storm and no one suffered too much property damage.
|
metsmarathon Aug 29 2011 08:14 AM Re: Good night Irene |
i'm hoping to have power back when i get home tonight... according to jcp&l estimates, there's about 4000 people in my town without power.

I love flood pictures. saw this one on Twitter, it's the Somerset Patriots stadium.

5 from mine. I was off today, but I may have to do some fun meandering tomorrow to get in. Saw somewhere that the rivers are peaking tomorrow morning.

Frayed Knot Aug 29 2011 08:50 PM Re: Good night Irene |
Sounds like Vermont, of all places, got as much of the ass-kicking as anywhere.

dgwphotography Aug 30 2011 05:01 AM Re: Good night Irene |

I'd say that we were fortunate, but that would be a massive understatement. The Milford coast got hammered - We never lost power, and the only damage I have is the assorted branches and leaves that I have to clean up in my yard. Many people here were not as fortunate - there are trees down everywhere, and about 2/3 of the city doesn't have power.
|
metirish Aug 30 2011 06:18 AM Re: Good night Irene |
Seeing the utter devastation in Vermont as FK noted and other areas I feel really fortunate, while the weather nuts were salivating over the sea surges it's the rivers that are wreaking havoc.
|
Frayed Knot Aug 30 2011 06:37 AM Re: Good night Irene |
You know that Cantore not being at the site of maximum destruction pisses the hell out of him.
|
themetfairy Aug 30 2011 06:39 AM Re: Good night Irene |
I'm without train service - the tracks on this part of the Northeast Corridor are still flooded.
|
metirish Aug 30 2011 06:40 AM Re: Good night Irene |
I meant to add, yesterday the local CBS station had anchor Christine Johnson do a whole 90 minute newscast from a boat in a flooded part of NJ, there she was riding around with some residents , it was bizarre , but it seemed after the devastation didn't materialize in NYC they were scrambling for something and anything to keep the show going.
|
Frayed Knot Aug 30 2011 06:45 AM Re: Good night Irene |
There was some news-chick a few years back doing her report from a rain-soaked area while being rowed in a row-boat in order to demonstrate how flooded things were.

I remember that - classic!

LOL.....Johnson was in a row boat too. I took a picture with my phone Did anyone else see the FOX reporter in Ocean City I think that was doing his report from the boardwalk and getting covered in a horrible gunky sea foam? I had a picture of him too but seemed to have deleted it.

I think that this is it. Damn - we were just down there a few weeks ago....

metirish Aug 30 2011 07:01 AM Re: Good night Irene |
Ha ha, that's him , the NY FOX studio anchors(the horrible Kelly and your one) kept egging him on, basically laughing at him....

My wife, walking the dog in some green space in Takoma Park, saw some kids gathered around something small. She went over and saw that it was a baby squirrel, not even really with it's eyes opened.
|
Ceetar Aug 30 2011 07:51 AM Re: Good night Irene |
95 minutes to go 12 miles to work today. bleargh. I wanted to take lunch to go take pictures of flooding around here, but no way i have time for that now.

Things looking rough up at the Old Mole Estate:

RealityChuck Aug 30 2011 10:10 AM Re: Good night Irene |
No damage and minimal leakage (though we did discover that our fuse box leaks water when it rains)
|
TheOldMole Aug 30 2011 10:22 AM Re: Good night Irene |
Still no power -- I'm in town at the bookstore with wifi. No loss of life, and the art work in the house is undamaged.
|
Edgy DC Aug 30 2011 11:24 AM Re: Good night Irene |
Thankful for your safety. Hope you get a generous settlement, and that the sculpture wasn't terribly damaged.
|
TheOldMole Aug 30 2011 03:15 PM Re: Good night Irene |
Ok, electricity back, internet back, after three days. No damage to Opus 40!or the museum, and, incredibly, no damage to the art inside the house. We lost 44 trees, and the roof of our house. Other damage to the house we'll have to wait the contractor's report, which we'll get tomorrow. But whole villages up here were swept away. The devastation was incredible.
|
themetfairy Aug 30 2011 03:22 PM Re: Good night Irene |
Wow - incredible!
|
Ceetar Aug 30 2011 04:18 PM Re: Good night Irene |
yikes, 44 trees! That's rough. At least everyone's okay.
|
Ashie62 Aug 30 2011 06:48 PM Re: Good night Irene |
About a mile down from the Boonton sign is the Reservoir Tavern and a mile more is Ashies hometown of Parsippany now fighting out of Atlantic City by way of Morristown lol.

Nope - no interwebs from home. I can acess it s l o w l y on my phone and iPad via 3G but that's kinda tedious.

My sister is still without power in Williamsburg, VA. I told her the city officials were taking the whole colonial thing a little too far.

Finally finished cutting up the trees that fell in the back yard (large parts of the 50+ foot poplars we have on the border to our back yard).
