anyone have a compost pile at home?

i'm thinking of starting one up, partly as a way to not feel as bad about some of my vegetative food spoilage, and partly as a way to help clean up some of my yard, and partly as a way to get some nice fancy soil for future gardening projects.

so i'm wondering if there are any handy, easy solutions that people have used, any lessons learned from which products and methods do not in fact work, that sort of thing.

Re: composting

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I do what I call "Lazy Man's Compost."

When I have broccoli stems, or celery ends, or pepper stems, or whatever, I just throw them into my shrubbery. I figure that either some little animal will eat it, or it will decay and nourish the soil. This seems better than putting it in a plastic bag and having it sit in a landfill where it's a lot less likely to do anyone any good.

Re: composting

We dummied up a compost bin by making a cylinder (about three feet high, three feet in diameter) out of some mesh fencing. Doesn't do the fancy automatic turning thing that the ones they sell at Home Depot do, but it gets the job done.

Re: composting

Bought a composter a while ago from the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. Have to say, however, that mrs. sharpie (who does all of the gardening) ended up not using any of the composting this year. Next year I guess. I do like dumping vegetable waste into there.
