Top 5 Songs With Parentheses in the Title

...was tonight's challenge at the bar.

Consensus picks:

(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher
Pride (In the Name of Love)
Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)
(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding?

---

Yours?

Re: Top 5 Songs With Parentheses in the Title

The first 5 I thought of...

Beatles "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"
Jimi Hendrix "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"
Weezer "Undone (The Sweater Song)"
Michael Jackson "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)"
AC/DC "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)"

Re: Top 5 Songs With Parentheses in the Title

I'd go with Fman's five, except maybe finding a way to stick the U2 in there.

I've really never understood the "parentheses in song titles" thing.

Re: Top 5 Songs With Parentheses in the Title

Five best Bob Dylan parenthetical songs:

It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)
Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)
One More Cup of Coffee (Valley Below)
One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later)

Also, five non-Bobs:

(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction -- Rolling Stones
It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) -- REM
Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman) -- Led Zeppelin
Happy Christmas (War Is Over) -- John Lennon
(Sittin' On the) Dock of the Bay -- Otis Redding

Re: Top 5 Songs With Parentheses in the Title

It's the End of the World... certainly makes the top 5 R.E.M. list with parentheses (although it would't be on my top 5 overall):

It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)
Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars)
(Don't Go Back to) Rockville
Auctioneer (Another Engine)
So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)

I'm OK with it if the parentheses express (or attempts to express) a ... well, a parenthetical thought.
I do agree that it's kind of lame when it only seems to be there in order to remind people of the song's title in those cases where the song happens to NOT be named for its most familiar refrain.

Re: Top 5 Songs With Parentheses in the Title

A hundred thousand people walk into record stores looking for "You know, that piña colada song," then it has a way of getting a song name changed from "Escape" to "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)."

I like how the Police weren't afraid of using ridiculously long refrain lines for titles without resorting to parentheticals, like "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" instead of "(Every Little Thing She Does Is) Magic)" or "When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around" rather than ""When the World Is Running Down (You Make the Best of What's Still Around)."

They certainly made Casey Kasem work harder.

5 I just thought of:

If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself) - Pete Droge
(Do the) Instant Mash - Joe Jackson
Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You (Tonite) - Spinal Tap
Wake Up (Next to You) - Graham parker
A Woman In Love (It's not Me) - TP&H

Five by John Lennon (two are Lennon-McCartney songs but are really just his):

Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
I Want You (She's So Heavy)
Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)
Happy Christmas (War Is Over)
(Just Like) Starting Over

What confuses DJs was always whether the parenthetical is an alternative title or an extension of the title. I've always thought of "In the Name of Love" as an alternative title to "Pride," and so it wasn't meant to be read as "Pride in the Name of Love," as it typically was, without a pause or an "or" in between the two parts.

These guys are kings of parentheticals. Sometimes to clarify. Sometimes to obscure.

Re: Top 5 Songs With Parentheses in the Title

I'm with seawolf as many of the parentheses in song titles are extraneous.

"I Can't Get No Satisfaction" would be a fine song title. Or you could just go with "Satisfaction." The parentheses are totally unnecessary.

Agreed. Though, to be fair, there is that bulky segment at the end of each chorus where Mick's all "CAN'T GET NO!"

Two titles and neither one is the the line people most associate with the song:

Re: Top 5 Songs With Parentheses in the Title

Parentheses (Intended to Avoid Confusion)

"Jump (For My Love)" by the Pointer Sisters, released a few months after "Jump" by Van Halen.

"(They Just Can't Stop It The) Games People Play)" by the Spinners, in deference to "Games People Play" by Joe South; despite my adoration of all things Spinners, particularly this song, gads that's stupid.

Parentheses (That Seem to Pile On)

"Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American)" by Toby Keith. Though I'm sure "the boot in your ass song" will suffice.

Parentheses (That You'd Think Would Be There But Aren't)

"Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods -- from The Cable Guy soundtrack, a hit in 1996 despite there being absolutely nothing in the song about broken phone booths or money or hands.

Parentheses (If They Used Them on Ballparks)

"Oriole Park (at Camden Yards)"

Whither the funk*?

"Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)," Parliament
"Get Up (I Feel Like A Sex Machine)," JB
"P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)," Parliament
"I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up and Dance (Oops, Up Side Your Head)," The Gap Band
"Ball of Confusion (That's What the World is Today)," The Temptations
"She's a Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)," Carl Carlton
"Hot Pants (She Got to Use What She Got, To Get What She Wants)," JB
